Well the tricky thing about fui/fue is it can be the preterit form of ser or ir so it can mean was or went. You just have to know from context. For fui vs estuve, fui is a form of ser and estuve is a form of estar, so fui is for characteristics estuve is for states although I think it's more common to hear the imperfect form of ser like era. Hopefully Maria can chime in and see if I'm close.

The problem is that you can say (e.g) la cena fue/era/estaba/estuve buena and they all mean different things. Whereas you only say 'was' in English. The difference between ser and estar is relatively easy but I think it's preterite /imperfect that trips people up. I like to imagine that preterite is like taking a photo where as imperfect is like making a video. The important thing to remember is that this difference DOES NOT EXIST IN ENGLISH. Stop trying to explain it with English comparisons and get into a Spanish 'way of thinking' and it will get much easier. Most importantly, listen, listen, listen, listen!!!

El verbo es "pedir". Preguntar significa hacer una pregunta (to ask a question) mientras pedir significa demandar, rogar, exigir, etc. (to ask for something, to ask someone to do something).

I wish you had covered traer and llevar. In English those can both be "to bring." Maybe you could do a second video with more of these. And how about a video just on "to be." There are at least six verbs for that in Spanish: ser, estar, haber, tener, llevar and hacer (for weather). Everyone is so focused on ser/estar. I don't think I've seen anyone do a video on all the different "to be"s. Also a video on the three different words for time: vez, tiempo, hora. Because I don't think the different versions "to be" or "time" are interchangeable.

I hear what you're saying but in actuality, "Tener" doesn't mean "to be" in that example. In Spanish if you are hungry you say "I have hunger". And logially, you yourself, are not hungy, you are Margaret...but you have this sensation of hunger...so maybe that's a better way to express it anyway. Llevar translates better as "to carry" and in your example, you're actually saying "I carry three hours reading." I get the confusion, but for me it's better to embrace that in Spanish they say things differently, and their way of saying things in some ways is better... I kind of like the way they use "to carry" as meaning you carry time. Having said that, it would be interesting to have a video clarifying all of this, which is I think what you are asking for.

Margaret Albrecht You need to understand that some things can't be 1:1 literally translated from one language to another. In spanish, age for example is considered a possession, so the literal meaning of Tengo veinte años is "I have 20 years", and not "I'm 20 years old" - that's just the way age is expressed in english.

I get confused when the reflexive pronoun "se" is added to verbs that are not done to one self or with oneself. For example: "Ellos se fueron al supermercado para compar muchas cosas." - They went to the supermarket to buy many things. Is this the same as "Ellos fueron al supermercado para compar muchas cosas"? If not, what's the difference?
