My take-away from the recent Vercel announcements is that they realised that money is no longer free and they need to start balancing their costs. To do this they will focus on enterprises where they assume they will rather have one vendor to deal with than multiple. The interesting thing is going to be if those enterprises also realise money ain't free anymore, and they might make some different decisions. It all feels a bit like Firebase a couple of years ago. I understand they need to make money, but the fact that getting in is cheap just makes it extra obvious how quickly it gets expensive once you start to scale.

A good idea would be to build a site/ tool which pull ups prices of various IaaS and PaaS services/ products, shows us a comparison and helps us decide in which scenario which provider will be best like (Small app/ Big App/ Millions of Users/ High bandwidth consumption etc ). to begin with AWS, GCP, Azure, Vercel,. the products range is too big but we can buld this app as FOSS with basic important services comparison and slowly add more providers and products. This can shape up slowly into a helpful price analyser tool

Nice. With time Vercel charges are out of my budget. I reached out to them for an enterprise plan but denied saying company size isn't enough😢. Now, we are exploring avenues to setup similar architecture into our organisation itself.

If you're trying to launch a startup and expect 1000-10000 users in the first 6 months with basic text and image interactions. What is the best hosting service? My web app will be in Laravel and will not be visited like normal sites, just during events.

It is cost effective given the time savings for startups. It is a good deal as long as your volumes are small. Should architect with a migration strategy in mind for when you grain market traction and grow exponentially in volumes with lagging revenue.

I too wondered at the cost of the vercel new offerings and had come across reports of high usage bills being issued to sme's when ddos'ed - ie prior to these service 'improvement', vercel seem to ramp up charges very agressively if your usage breaches an initial limit - so the 'stepping' of charges seem to be excessive. Im not convinced either

Honestly, vercel is trying to monopolize nextjs deployment by making it hard for developers who decide not to deploy on their platform to get all the features nextjs has to offer.

If your JS frame work is so complicated you a paid service to deploy it. A -> pick another framework B -> start learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript I yet to understand why there will be a service to get what is just a file over http

I don't know if this is true but assuming neondb and upstash use aws servers on the backend, vercel just wraps neondb and upstash. Enterprise app developers wrap the vercel offerings with their own app which is probably just a UI for some functionality. So consumers of saas apps are really paying through the neck and feeding a myriad of families here roflll Everyone's pockets gets lined. Imagine the saas customer is a marketing agency that sells it's services to small businesses. It's no wonder why there are so many scams and scammy pricing in the marketing space. rofl.

TBH it’s not all that difficult to learn AWS CDK and code a template that will build you exactly what Vercel charges for. More reusable and more customizable. And all you pay is what you use. I’d recommend people stop looking for shortcuts that will cause huge headaches later down the road. Do it yourself. It’s bad enough we all deploy to someone else’s computer, don’t make it worse by allowing Vercel to run their scams cause you’re lazy
