Just to clarify, since I keep getting comments about this: The prison episode is a reference to The Shawshank Redemption AND a film called Cool Hand Luke. I have 3 theories about this show: 1. Vince/Peter were both contractually obligated to make this show, and they knew AMC would make it shitty. Vince has mentioned multiple times that he's mainly let Peter Gould write/direct most of Better Call Saul (like the roles in making breaking bad but reversed). Maybe as a favor, he was like "Hey Peter, they're gonna make one of us do this, since I gave you BCS could you take this shitty bullet for me" and Peter apparently does, and that's why his name's attached and not Vince's 2. Still contractually obligated to make a spinoff show, but Peter made sure that it sucked ass on purpose to kill any chance for any other spinoff potential, since I imagine after BCS is over Peter/Vince want to protect their finely crafted and decades-long saga they created together. 3. Made it suck on purpose, maybe because they didn't get paid nearly enough money as they thought they should for it lol

I remain convinced that, since some of the writers on this show worked on Better Call Saul, that they made it this bad on purpose. I'm certain AMC wanted more "content" from the "Breaking Bad" universe to help prop up their streaming service, and that absolutely no one working on this wanted to do it. So they put in as little effort as possible and made it as irrelevant to the original show so that it was completely disposable. Honestly, from that perspective, the show is kind of genius in that it may singlehandedly kill the idea that they should produce anything else tangential to this universe. For the love of god, let it end with BCS' upcoming finale, and let this incredibly talented team move onto something new

Better idea for each of the episodes: Jimmy conducts his first 'slip' to get the bully suspended, but ends up spraining his ankle and ends up stuck out of school for the same duration the bully kid is suspended Jimmy swaps out Chuck's law book with a Book of the Law (by Aleister Crowley), and Chuck gets comedically possessed. This possession manifests as Chuck having a personality that Jimmy gets along with due to the conniving nature of the spirit. However, when the two get caught doing a crime, Jimmy convinces everyone that he was actually trying to stop his irate, possessed brother from committing these crimes. He succeeds, but now Chuck begins making death threats from the cell in which he gets locked up. The police recognize the possession, because for some reason relating to Masons the police in this district are required to recognize all signs of demonic possession, and know how to exorcise them. However, all of the methods of exorcism are almost certainly fatal, so Jimmy sneaks in and forces a law book in front of Chuck. Chuck's own personality causes him to read it, which bores the demon out of him. Jimmy wants to sneak into an 'adult' club and so does the stereotypical 'two kids in a suit' thing. They get caught, but it turns out the bouncer and most of the clientele are also pairs of kids in overcoats. Eventually, they all fall out of their suits, only leaving a few staff members, the owners, and some very confused strippers, all surveying the fallen children. One of the staff is actually Mike Ehrmentraut before he became a police officer. Chuck is getting burnt out from all his overworking of himself, so Jimmy decides to get him to go to a movie. They lose their tickets, and then hijinks ensue, but Chuck holds Jimmy back from his more 'wild' tricks, and thus hinders Jimmy greatly in getting their tickets. They find their tickets, but they find them in the hands of the bully and a friend/girlfriend of his, so he beats them up. They end up having to go home, but Chuck is actually feeling better because he ended up touching grass anyway. Jimmy wants to ask a girl out, but he feels unconfident about doing so, so he tries to do or become various different things he can brag about to give himself 'bargaining power' to convince her to go to the prom with him. Eventually Marco asks her out and she says yes. Two dudes try to frame Jimmy for selling the weed they're selling, but Jimmy manages to slip it back into their backpacks. Afterwards, he agrees to help them frame somebody else, and they pick on this Mexican kid, who turns out to be a Salamenca and captures them. Eventually, Jimmy talks him into only giving each a scooter to the ankles.

I watched this, and throughout the first three episodes I was convinced this was 'bad on purpose' and it was going to lead into an ARG. Like, the final episode would reveal that this was being produced *by Jimmy himsef* (as Saul) as a soulless attempt at advertising. Maybe even Saul's plan was to make it bad and it'd be revealed that it was supposed to be shock advertising. If they'd done this (so, it cuts to Bob as Saul maybe berating the people who made it even thought the cartoon was entirely his work - very in character) and then the rest of the show had been something else - maybe even a good cartoon, with the plot reason that Jimmy'd been convinced to let someone else take the lead, or perhaps actually started recounting stuff closer to his life as tall tales - I think the awfulness would have gone down in history as one of the best marketing fakeouts: get the cringewatching, then switch it to something fantastic. Sadly, this was all a scenario I made up in my head because the show is so bafflingly bad I experienced cognitive dissonance trying to just watch it.

The worst thing about this show is that, way back when it was first announced, when I first heard about the concept of Slippin'Jimmy: "A series of animated shorts about a young Jimmy McGill and his life back in Cicero". I immediately imagined it as a show with Jimmy in his 20's or 30's doing slip and falls and scamming people with Marco. Y'know like the really interesting flashbacks and funny stories from BCS!? I thought we were gonna get to actually see Jimmy "STEALING FROM THE CASH DRAWER! STEALING THEM BLIND!", his ex wife banging his stepdad, and/or what really happened with Chet and his Chicago Sunroof! I was actually excited... I don't understand why 99% of adult cartoons are comedies. I know animated cartoons with a darker tone exist, but why is it the rare exception? Fucking Teen Titans, a cartoon for kids has WAY more depth and is much more serious than modern cartoons aimed for adults.
@straawberryfieldsforever2 жыл бұрын
Honestly adult cartoons nowadays are getting more and more bad. People love to joke "haha kid cartoons are stupid" but it might not actually be the case as much as adult cartoons. Ive tried almost every serie available, I dont think its normal that in a genre of more than 100 different cartoons I can only enjoy 3 (southpark, futurama and old simpsons) Most the rest are even painful to watch as you wonder how did they even get so off tracks and make this? "Kid" shows honestly are better than the adult animation junk netflix creates
@huntermorgan61772 жыл бұрын
Animation is cheaper and easier to produce than ever before, so shows for the soul purpose of cash-grabbing are given extremely slim budgets. It's hard to argue for more depth when most people without a passion for animation associate the medium with The Simpsons (and it's many grandchildren). It's like the idea of being irreverent on television has sort of become watered down and overdone. In an era of mainstream anime and post-Flash indie creators, cartoons saying curse words just isn't as shocking as it was in the 90's. It's not even that people don't think animation could do any better, it's just a maximization of profit for a low budget.
@jdiejejerje6612 жыл бұрын
Bojack Horseman is a good exception to this. It's genuinely funny, and has depth and writing that rivals the best live action shows I've ever seen. Some of the most emotionally devastating episodes I've witnessed in all of television comes from an adult cartoon about a talking horse. Animation studios churning out all of these lame shallow "adult animated comedies" could really take notes from that series.

The Slippin Jimmy Canonity Theories: 1. "Slippin Jimmy" is a riff on modern day adult animated TV shows. The premise is that, Walt and the gang needed to launder some cash quickly because the IRS are hot on their tail right now. Saul then outta nowhere came up with an idea to hire a bunch of aspiring animators from the school Walter formerly works at as cheap labour to make an adult animated cartoon. He would then use the cartoon as a cheap way and easy way to launder their dirty cash. Showing how it would canonically make sense in universe and as a call out to many other adult animated TV shows of the decade 2. It's all a hallucination in Marco's oxygen deprived brain during his final moments
@benm3382 Жыл бұрын
I actually find it more believable that this will somehow become canonically part of the story than just believing someone thought this was a good idea.

This could have been as simple as showing young Jimmy and Marco getting into trouble and him slowly becoming what he was at the start of better call Saul. The thing that I find really galling is that having a bunch of references to classic movies makes *perfect* sense for Jimmy. He loves classic movies, it's the commonality he had with Kim that made them friends in the HHM mailroom in the first place. So how can they be implemented so haphazardly that it doesn't even feel like that's the reason the writers chose to make Dollars trilogy references? They could have played in to Jimmy's personality during his formative years and they just utterly fail to.
@duffman182 жыл бұрын
exactly. Problem is the films they watched in BCS are "too old" for modern kids to know about them. All the films they watched together were black and white. So the slippin jimmy writers I guess decided to reference way younger films that Jimmy in BCS never showed an explicit appreciation in, and maybe that's why it felt so weird. Better idea for any of this: Every intro begins with a tape being inserted into a VCR. Title card flashes with perhaps Gene’s face in the reflection on a couch (a la beginning of BCS). Every episode emphasizes Jimmy’s childhood / how he became the “Slippin’ Jimmy” we all already know. It should be a tad hyperbolized since I believe everyone reminisces about their childhood every now and again, but not like extremely cartoonish to the point of looney tunes. Should flesh out key points like how he actually met Marco, his relation to Chuck and the rest of his family, etc. Honestly it COULDVE been a great idea, just sad to see it wasted.
