Verdi: Messa Da Requiem [FULL LENGTH]

Verdi’s awe-inspiring Requiem lends the drama of opera to a deeply personal expression of grief.
Although it follows the shape of a Requiem mass, Verdi never intended this powerful and moving music for church use but as a public memorial to one of Italy’s national heroes, the poet Manzoni. The Requiem is both deeply personal and spectacular in effect.
The famous mass was illustrated by drawings of the renowned comics artist Philippe Druillet, taken from his comics Yragaël and Lone Sloane Delirius 2 or especially created for the occasion with the help of the illustrator Dimitri Avramoglou. It was then recomposed, colorized and animated before the projection onto the façade of the theater for a tremendous show.

The Requiem was first performed in the church of San Marco in Milan on 22 May 1874, the first anniversary of Manzoni's death. Verdi himself conducted, and the four soloists were Teresa Stolz (soprano), Maria Waldmann (mezzo-soprano), Giuseppe Capponi (tenor) and Ormondo Maini (bass).[3]

What a brilliant, stunningly powerfully beautiful performance of this great work. La prise de son est excellente, l' orchestre est remarquable, les deux chanteuses solistes sont au sommet, mais il y a quand même ici une ambiance de mort ! Lol 😅🥹😂✌🥰😎🤩🥳Bref, une version qui enfin fait aimer verdi, malgré quelques belles fausses notes des solistes, et la plus belle du Baryton, mais bon, on ne va pas critiquer les morts, ils nous entendent ! Vraiment les deux femmes sont magnifiques, Soprano et Mezzo soprano, mais je dirais que Ekaterina Gubanova une fois chauffée, transcende la partition, c' est une chanteuse mystique. Elle réveillerait les morts tant sa féminité est somptueuse, une femme de toute beauté avec laquelle on traverserait corps et âme jusqu' à la cour de l' Elysée, c' est peu dire ! Mais: Avec une telle interprétation, quelle utilité du décor ? Bien que cela me révulse par principe, et malgré tout ici, bien que l' illumination soit bien réalisée, les projections colorées n' apportent rien de plus car chacun est déjà au sommet: N' entendez vous donc pas cette plénitude pour que vous ayez besoin de vous occuper la vue comme des enfants rivés tous sens confondus sur leur smartphone, comme on charge une mulle qui porte myrrhe et or avec du gravas supplémentaire ? Pétain, c' est pas Versailles à tous les étages ! Bouffez un double Mac-do pendant que vous y êtes et gavez vous de Coca, vous serez comblés en enfer ! Les responsables de ce concert n' ont certes pas les vertus au niveau de ma conscience, et je considère un tel rajout nuisible au résultat général. Le mur des lamentations ! Bref, autant s 'occuper les yeux ailleurs et débrancher l' image ! Et laissez vos mains dans vos poches ! Faites donc comme les auditeurs de LP collectors, à bon escient: libérez vos yeux pour sublimer vos oreilles !

Everyone says that Verdi's requiem is the best opera he never wrote!? That is because like Bach and Handel there's quite a lot of self borrowing from his operas. Aida stands out with his use of solo woodwind with solo soprano. The famous Dies Irae is actually borrowed from his early opera Giovanni D Arco, which is used in the overture then in the opening chorus of act 2. He uses leitmotif in the same way as his operas. There's also hints of Don Carlos in there. When you come to Angus Dei his style goes into the style of Puccini. Especially the soprano and mezzo soprano singing in octaves, and the expanse of the melody with ornaments. Reminds one of madam Butterfly humming chorus!?

More Lovecraftian than satanic, I think, and I suppose the producers wanted the visuals to match the tone of the requiem. Given that the camera would normally be panning around the music hall, I think the Druillet graphics help to immerse the viewer in the performance.

I guess Toulouse thought it had nothing...to lose...by posting images giving hell "equal" time with Heaven in Verdi's Christian sendoff to the soul of Alessandro Manzoni. Poor Verdi's children predeceased him, but does the Manzoni family know about this posting's demonic images? Didn't Verdi compose this as liturgical music? the choosing of imagery is too on the nose. This is not just art or just a style or a joke or cool.
