He plays like a beginner because he's really, really bad at the bass. You call it he "never over played". But let me tell you: this dude just can't play. He's like Kirk Hammet. Only good in his band. Couldn't play anywhere else. He can't improvise and he can't jam. He just doesn't have the skill.

@@mantelmann13 I haven’t really felt he’s phenomenal either. I love EWF entire catalog but I don’t hear any amazing bass lines that stand out on its own or wouldn’t be very easily duplicated by any1 that could play. In that group I hear great horn section (obviously) great singing, writing, keys and even non conventional instruments that u wouldn’t hear in another band but bass playing just doesn’t stand out 2 me. They’re an amazing group though.

The select few who disliked this I must ask how old are you? Verdine White is a legend. A living legend. In fact a man that will have a conversation with you, share a laugh or two and will treat you with respect. Ego and bodyguard free. This man is responsible for some of the heaviest grooves ever recorded on tape and pressed on record. Oops I just told my age. Glad I did because I saw EWF back in the day live. Back then every song on the album was strong and when you saw them live no one sat in their seat. The showmanship and performance was impeccable. Beyonce and Bruno Mars read the EWF handbook because these are the only young people doing the stage justice today. Just my two cents. Love you Mr. White and thank you for the great songs and memories.

I fell hard for this song back in 1976 when i was in the 8th grade and could not get enough of that driving bass with its many tempo changes. Heck...the whole double album was fantastic. EWF at their best. I love that verdine is not a pop and slap player. That drives me crazy. He plays the song in the pocket with some tasty embellishments here and there. Being a bassist myself I have nothing but the most utmost respect and admiration for him. He and Bernard Edwards are my favorite electric bass players. Not only that he is a downright nice and humble gentleman. Peace and love. 🎶🎶🎶

Attention Shoppers Verdine White is not playing the bass on any of the EWF Hits. Louis Satterfield (The trombonist- Bassist) is the genius behind the music. Verdine literally faked playing bas his entire EWF Career. Look at any EWF Live performance clip and closely watch his fingers while listening to the bass line. Why do you think he has so much energy to jump and dance around. Verdine can play bass ( a 5 out of 10). How do i know this> Half of the EWF group met while playing in my dads group (Phil Cohran and the Artist Heritage Ensemble 1965 to 1969... There are several recordings online. Louis was my 1st and most significant bass teacher. The world needs to know the truth about his great works in popular music..

EWF is one of my favorite bands. But you should take a visit to talkbass.com and see the analysis of Verdine's "playing." Any bass player who's tried to cop the original bass lines on those records can see clearly that this guy doesn't have the technique to play that stuff, especially 40 + years ago. The rumour is, their keyboard player was the stunt double that did all that stuff so Verdine could concentrate on dancing instead of playing. The fact that a legendary funk band has Milli Vanilli on bass is disheartening, considering how badass EWF was, and still is. Frank Zappa used to parody them when he said "okay now, imitate EWF" and the bass player would stop playing and their would be a recording with the bass track still playing. Watch the clips on talkbass.com where Verdine's hands are NOT matching the lines that the audience is hearing thru the PA. There's your proof right there. We're not haters.....we're disappointed. I DGAF who played those bass lines, they were badass.....in fact, whoever it was? Isn't getting the credit where its due. 'Nuf said.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXvFi5uqbq-jb5Y Here's a clip of Verdine in the 1970s. It sure as shit looks to me like he's playing that bass. I don't see how a keyboardist could have faked it and nobody noticed Verdine wasn't playing, let alone a keyboard of that time getting anywhere near the sound of that Tele bass. There is no way he is NOT playing that bass. And I've heard a whole lot worse bass solos. If he can play what he is playing here, he can certainly play the lines that were recorded on EWF LPs. There are a ton of videos of Verdine playing bass on KZbin, some not so great and some really great. He played the bass. You sound like one of these people who believe we never went to the moon... even when there is ample proof we did.

I truly believe what your saying, and I think people know that that's why they always say he isnt a soloist. I think he's just an average bass player, I have watched other vidoes of him playing on stage with other legend bass players. And I can hear the other bass players but not him. I think he has people fooled by his showmanship. Basically he's just plays riffs.
