When your steps bring you to the ancient glory, the #Byzantine splendor, together with Macedonian hospitality, then you are in an exciting #destination that combines everything uniquely, in a green natural landscape with #forests and rivers!

Nestled at the foot of Mount #Vermio in Northern Greece, Veria city is overlooking the plain of #Giannitsa. Only 70 km west of #Thessaloniki, with a population of 63,000, it is known for its well-preserved Byzantine and #Ottoman architecture, its charming old town and important religious significance - a rare blend of the ancient and the modern. According to #mythology, Veria was the daughter of #Oceanus and Thetis. The most important city of the Macedonian Kingdom, since together with Edessa and #Pella it was the capital during the Hellenistic years. Here preached Saint #Paul and Silas. The #Turkish conquerors called it #Karaferya, i.e. Black-Veria because of the gloom during the wet winter season.
We start from #Elia park, full of people, #cafes and #restaurants. It is the balcony of Veria overlooking the whole plain, which in spring forms a rosy carpet from the peach blossoms. A #magical experience!
In #Clock Square, admire the fountains and the old Ottoman Administration mansion. You won't find a clock anymore, since it was demolished together with its medieval tower.
Tripotamos runs through Veria, offering a peaceful natural environment within the city. Here is #Barbouta, a beautifully preserved Jewish quarter with narrow cobbled streets, traditional stone houses and elegant mansions. The area has been inhabited since Byzantine times and is home to one of the oldest Jewish #Synagogues in Greece.
Veria is also known as "little #Jerusalem ", due to the abundance of Byzantine churches that have survived to this day, most of which are located inside the city. The frescoes in the old Cathedral of the 11th century are impressive. #Kyriotissa was the Christian quarter of the city, with its narrow cobblestone streets, alleys and the roofs of the houses that seem to touch each other. Today, many of the listed houses have been restored and turned into leisure and entertainment venues.
One of the most important religious and historical landmarks of Veria, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world, is Saint Paul's #Altar. It is at this location that he is believed to have preached Christianity to the #Bereotians in 50 AD. during his second missionary journey.
The Byzantine #Museum of Veria displays an impressive collection of objects, images and frescoes from the Byzantine period in a beautifully restored 19th century building.
The #Archaeological Museum houses objects from ancient Veria and the surrounding area.
Besides, there are also monuments from the Ottoman past of the region.
#Aliakmonas is the largest river in Greece! A blue water fountain of life that crosses mountains, bridges and green landscapes!
Vergina is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and a #UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vergina was the ancient capital of Macedonia, known as #Aiges, and the #tomb of Philip II, father of #Alexander the Great, was discovered there. The Museum of Royal Tombs displays stunning golden #relics and ancient treasures from the Macedonian kingdom, while the burial mound of Philip II inspires awe at the majesty of the ancient Macedonian #dynasty that changed the course of history.
On the slopes of #Vermio, the #Monastery of Panagia #Sumela stands majestically. It was built in 1951 by #Pontus refugees, as an attempt to revive the historic Monastery of the same name, the ruins of which are located on Mount Mela, near #Trebizond, Pontus. Here is kept the old miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which, according to tradition, was created by the #Evangelist Luke.
Next stop is #Naousa. Picturesque alleys, the archaeological site where the great philosopher #Aristotle taught Alexander the Great and the magical park of Agios Nikolaos!
A visit to Vermio is recommended. This mountain range offers great opportunities for #hiking, winter skiing in the ski resorts and exploring the lush forests.
#Edessa with its famous #Waterfalls and picturesque corners is a great idea for a day trip!
An important part of Veria is the rich #culinary tradition of the region. Local Macedonian #recipes, oriental food and sweets, excellent local wines and #grappa and completely satisfied guests!
