"Depth stop" holder on Stanley moving section is for beading stop which is much longer than regular depth stop on the main stock. There is a smaller depth stop (often missing) for this spot on the moving section. The slitter on Stanely is to cut/slit veneers or thin wood boards. The main difference between Stanley 45 and 55 is not the double fence option. On 45, you can move the rods over more and have nother 45 fence on it. It is on 55, the sliding section can move lower than the main section to support cutters that are lower on the outside. Also, the fences on 55 can tilt around the push direction so you can a bead on the corner of a post/beam. Stanley combo planes are more for 3 finger grip since you can reach blade adjustment wheel with your index finger. On all my bevel up planes, I use my left hand to adjust blade since there is no way fingers on my right hand can reach, let alone getting any grip. Or I have to put the plane down to make blade adjustment with my right hand. Small hand problem. Very early Stanley 45s have brass thumbscrews with straight knurling, similar to what is on their bench plane blade adjustment knob/wheel. When every thumbscrew is wing type, and you have different moving parts close together, somethings you cannot tighten some of them or the wings will interfere with each other. Knurled thumbscrew with a slot on the head is probably the best; you can adjust with fingers, and loosen stuck ones with a flat head screw driver.

I got my 45 in 2020 for $45 as part of my 'Covid hobby' of restoring old planes. It came with one blade and mismatched bars (1 long & 1 short). Over the past three years I have purchased an additional 35 blades and built a finger-jointed, hinged box to store everything (I even used the 45 to make the dados for the top & bottom of the box). The 'fun' of the project was the hunt for the blades. My wife likes antiquing and I usually get bored very quickly, so the hunt allowed me to join in her favorite activity. It also allowed us to travel around central and northern Arizona to all the out-of-the-way shops we could find and enjoy the drive, weather, and try some out some new restaurants. While the Veritas Combination plane is very nice, the memories gained with the 45 make it impossible to replace.

Oh 100%! You build and restored that plane and each piece is a memory. You can't give that up! The sentimental value of a tool outweighs alot!!! Great job and thank you for sharing, I like this!

Happy to have helped, was awesome to see the two side by side! I got lucky with how nice of one I found for sure! My hands are a bit bigger than yours and I cannot use a full grip in it I have to stick the pointer out, in case anyone else was wondering about that.

13:50 The slitter is used when you pull the plane backwards. It can act as a nicker, but it also works as a veneer cutter. In fact, I think the primary purpose of the slitter is veneer cutting. Something you mentioned at the beginning of the video was the location of the depth adjusters. I find that the Stanley adjusters actually work better than the Veritas because, by setting them at different positions from each other, you can keep the whole plane flat on the wood. With the Veritas, there's too much of a chance of the plane not being level when you reach the end. There's also other reasons for the two adjusters that I cant really remember at the moment.
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
This is deff a valid point, with the depth adjusters ofset they have more contact longer. With them lined up its only contact right there. Thank you for pointing that out!

Hi, thanks for posting this comparison. I have a stanley 45 and like it very much...works for me pretty well, though I know that veritas would be great as they make tools to very high standards. One question,some of the blades I have are damaged. Do the veritas blade work with stanley 45? From the looks of it I think they should but since you had a chance to handle both, wanted to check if you had tried that already. Thanks!
@BatCaveCreations4 ай бұрын
Hey! If I remember correctly they do. But both of these were borrowed so I can't check :( check the thickness of the irons on lee valley and then use a piece of wood thay thickness and see if it fits in. Thay will be a sure fire way to make sure. Sorry I couldn't help more :(

I just got my veritas last night, haven’t had much time to play. I did manage to cut 2 dados that matched an odd angle. The used my LA Jack to join the groves together to make a flat face at the perfect angle. The combo plane is very easy to use and cuts great out of the box.

Good video. I have the small version of the veritas and I have a 45 and 50. The funny thing is I was looking around my shop the other day, because I just moved things around, I could find the blades for my 50 but not my 45. I think I picked up my 45 for around $200 last year, and it had all of the cutters. They are all really neat planes that can do some stuff really fast vs.having to setup or reset up the table saw or do some strange stuff with the router table. Though most of the time I am just using them to cut dados for the bottom of boxes. Though I did make some picture frames and I used my handplanes to do the beading around the edges. I think I am fairly lazy in the fact that I did all the beading when the board was in 1 piece and then cut the miters. And your friends Stanley is in amazing shape.
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
That is awesome! I do the same thing! Tbh if I was loaded I would have multiple planes all set uo for 1 task and leave then that way haha like 5 plow planes for diff tasks that's the level of lazy I reach sometimes hahahha 😅

I guess I'll stick woth my 2 Stanley 45s...Type 4 and a Type 20...Type 4 is set up as a Dado plane...while the Type 20 handles all the rest...

like everyone else has already said; the blade in back of the body is for veneer cuts. Your index finger should rest lightly on the blade adjuster. I have a great 45 and 55 with all the blades. I couldn't imagine paying for a veritas + all the different blades.
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
I always forget the index finger it is a bad bad habit. I do the same thing with hand planes :( If you already have a 45 and 55 with the cutters you deff don't need to get the Veritas! Both planes work :D
@TheMachoGabacho Жыл бұрын
I recently picked up a Stanley 55 in excellent condition with all the cutters. I’ll probably buy the Veritas to use on a regular basis, and only use the Stanley when I have to use the adjustable skate height for certain cutters. I’m always torn between buying new high quality tools and buying vintage. I’m both a collector and user, so I don’t mind buying both if its reasonable to do so.
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
I'm the same way, if the vintage performs just fine and is cheeper go for it! Esp if it's a plane you don't use too too often! If it's a plane I use all the time, like Mt bench planes, I prefer new cus they are just easier for me lol

I love my v combo plane 😊 , still I have to purchase more blades for it ,I think the blade on Stanley used for cutting veneers or small thin wood or slitting and omg I didn't know about the 2 fences becoming a 55 thanks for the tip .

Can you show us how to use Veritas as Stanley 55? I didn't get the idea of two fences on both sides. Also are they both 45 degrees angle bevel down?
@BatCaveCreations Жыл бұрын
Yes I will in the next video, it doesn't have all the features of the 55 but the dual fence makes it easier to work on the edges of boards. Ah yes I forgot to say that, both beds are at 45 degrees and the cutters are bevel down

Veritas is the only company actually experimenting and innovating with hand plane designs. Other than build quality and minor part differences there's not much to say when comparing a vintage Stanley, new Stanley, Lie Nielson, WoodRiver, etc.
@toddwheeler1526Ай бұрын
You are comparing a classic old tool that has created thousands of miles of moldings and trim too a modern age computer designed and manufactured tool that does feet for the few that can afford them and actually do use them for paying work. I will take the classic.

Handle / tote. Stanley expected you to use it like a saw, with only 3 fingers wrapped around, but the forefinger out straight to guide it forward.
