yeah I just realised it was him in that popular video. I remember seeing and watching it but I don't remember the source. Maybe another youtuber recommended it or something. interesting though, because I came back to his channel later again from another source and that's when I decided to subscribe. so although it was his first video that I watched, it wasn't what brought me to his channel.

I liked the supercooled water video. My kids were really excited when they saw the water freeze (maybe that's the lead with awesome you were talking about). It lead me to go buy some bottled FIJI water that night so my kids could have a "Science Sunday" with their Grandma the next day.

Well everybody has to start somewhere! I think your freezing water video was great though! And btw our chemics teacher showed that video to us and that is how I got to know your KZbin Chanel and now I'm your biggest fan!! You're so professional and great !! I love all your videos Derek! I hope to be like you after I finish my senior high school year :)

I feel the exact same way with art making. I've got good taste, but am creating works that don't fulfill my expectations. Good thing is, I use that to my advantage and try to create better works.

Iv noticed that a lot not just with people making videos and such but in peoples lives. They enjoy a tv show or something when they are younger then when they get older and more mature they think "what was I thinking?" Sometimes however, there is that nostalgia that causes people to keep enjoying something even though it might not be as good as they thought it was. Its quite strange and at the same time interesting.

@nickolaspedrosa853411 жыл бұрын
I think it goes this way: The art progresses a little slower than criticism or the ability to criticize. That may be simply because it's easier to catch flaws than to amend them. The effect it has on us is that while you're on a path of improvement in some area, at some point you get frustrated with the pace your ability is evolving because you begin to notice the flaws with more expertise than you have to amend them. Later on, I think, if you keep trying, you'll eventually get in balance.
@Daisuken9211 жыл бұрын
Ohh, don't be like that! You are and were one of my favorites on YT since your start!
@bleedingrevenge1211 жыл бұрын
I think the way you structure your videos is great (says the college dropout to the Doctor of Science Videos). Leading with common misconceptions is great, but maybe you could expand that by hosting a science game show or giving your interviewees time to search the web to get people used to finding their own answers. As a physics enthusiast, I hope you delve deeper into the realms of Einstein and the quantum so that eventually our own perception of reality can be discussed as a misconception.
@GiveMeaUsernameWithR11 жыл бұрын
Hey! In the beginning of your video you show the centrepoint tower, soooo you gotta be in Sydney! Which is awesome because I'm just getting done with school in Düsseldorf, Germany and will be coming to Sydney on August 14th and then stay for a year and do the whole work and travel thing. It'd be great if you'd consider a meet up, get a couple beers somewhere or go to the beach :) Would be awesome!!

RE you: never mind 'performativity'. Humility, self-awareness (in speech and action/proprioception), honesty, truth = likeability, credibility. As for filming/editing short video clips that people will be hooked into spending their valuable time by watching further, then, sure, "lead with awesome".
@MrBigape111 жыл бұрын
I like these casual talk videos just as you walk or shop or whatever. Personally, I would love to hear more about your view as person who did a science thesis. More specifically directed to someone like me who is getting closer to finishing high school and considering a scientific degree. I hear so much about needing passion; imagination; bleak job prospects ;going into it with an open mind. From your experience, what would your advice to an 'aspiring' scientist be?
@crafty_geek11 жыл бұрын
The problem in your early videos can be stated in 2 words: Lecture Mode. You were presenting your argument as a lecture, the mold that has been in people's minds since 3rd grade. The core breakthrough with KZbin science videos - not yours, but the general trend - is the break from the lecture to the conversation. 'Social dialogue', to borrow your term, is the key. You can talk to as many people as you want about misconceptions, but the key of KZbin is the social dialogue with your audience.

Because past has to be there. I mean it like "Why don't you re-do highschool, if for you (hypotetically) it was the crappiest period of your life?" If you try to look at your old creations (in this case, videos) as past phases of your life (or your creative life) you will soon realise, as with the highschool example, that you shouldn't re-make them. They are there to stay. They are part of what has built you as an artist, as a part of your creative past. Those are my thoughts, cheers!

Another important consideration is to think carefully about what sort of thing annoys you as a viewer. To me, outside of "artistic" videos, music where music isn't necessary is annoying, and so are intro titles. About the only time intro titles are good in expositive videos is if they're REALLY well done (the Crashcourse videos are a good example of this), otherwise it's just better to get to the point.

I have noticed this fundamental change in your videos. I actually preferred the old model, where you typically start with the misconception, the question, or just the background and then you work your way to the "awesome." Your new model of leading with the awesome might be more attention grabbing, but it's not necessarily more insightful. Personally I thought your "niche" was teaching classic, fundamental concepts in an interesting way. I worry a bit that you are straying from that.
