ok I figured it out. They are doing multiple ditches side by side. see how the left side is sloughing in at 1:05. Its already been trenched. So they must be planning on doing 3 passes to fit that enormous pipe in the trench.

@DrCodeMonkey - Some areas, Osha will not allow an open trench to be left overnight so they cut the first trench, then fill it in with loose overburden, then come back at a later date to lay the pipe

Dude don't fill it in yet we've not put the pipe in! they can't leave an open trench for safety reasons but damn what a shame the pipe couldn't go straight in !

@DrCodeMonkey this is a hard rock PRE trenching operation where you cut all the mains an laterales before the under ground crews come in an dig the lines with backhoes or track hoes to install them. in this case the RCP (round concrete pipe) for strom drains will go first, thats y the pipe is laid out.
