This talk by Associate Curator Dita Amory focuses on the late interiors and related still-life imagery of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) in the context of French modernism. She describes Bonnard's ways of seeing and his artistic process in comparison to the processes of his contemporaries-including Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)-and of the Impressionists. Touching on both the criticism and praise bestowed upon Bonnard and his work, Amory concludes with evidence of the artist's influence on later painters. This is the first of three videos recorded on February 8, 2009, in conjunction with the special exhibition "Pierre Bonnard: The Late Interiors," on view at the Met January 27 through April 19, 2009.

Exquisite ... honest ... and an homage to an artist I was first attracted to in 1971 ... for his lushness, his playfulness, and his transcendence .

I saw a show of bonnards works at the Phillips collection in wash dc. In the early 80s. It changed my life. His work is sublime and practically creates an aesthetic trance.

That was just wonderful. Bonnard has come to play such a major role at the Met that a regular visitor can come to know him, in the midst of so much great art, as a friend with whom one can always sit with in quiet celebration of the beauty and joys of painting. This lecture was a wonderful recognition of the purity, integrity and quiet dignity of Bonnard and his art.

Color is a deep song from soul and Looking at late paintings from Bonnard is truly an imaginary symphony of poetics of life

Great lecture on Bonnard's work, his use of color, subject and impressionists. The lecture gave a clear narrative of Bonnard's philosophy of life and painting, with the camera focusing on slides of the actual work. I often find it boring when the camera stays on the speaker for most of the lecture and only gives brief views of the artist's work.

This is a great presentation of the art of Bonnard, thank you very much. Its telling a very informative story of how history of Modern Art and critics are colored and therefore also that art and expressions of art are and must be diverse. Since artists work from many perspectives of experiencing and understanding life, its also a very important discussion about the continuous development of methods and interests of Modernism and of course also a very old philosophical discussion of the relative relations of body-mind-world- of the subjektive- objective ....the personal, the social and political, the poetics and the politics so to speak, into combats of the importance of the well defined and the fluidity - of concept and perception of limitless and the mysteries of the well known - the here and now- very inspiring

Luckily Art is and ought to be so much more than revolutionism - and Bonnard has diverse deep into the mystery of color and the unknown in the known.

More Bonnard & less Picasso Please 🦋🌬🦋 I can see his notations of the fluid movement of light in his drawings. The beauty light color and intense dream like space in his paintings have long influenced my perceptions of a world around me. I see in his complex compositions the highest achievement of Mastery in the synthesis of light, color, form and atmosphere juxtaposed on a two dimensional canvas~space in the whole of Painting to date.

Calling the impressionists tonal painters is completely wrong. The links to the artists at the end were tenuous - I'd say someone like Peter Doig is a much better example. Very much doubt her understanding of Bonnard.

Why is Picasso such an emphasis here. His greatest talent was for self promotion. I personally can’t look at his work whereas Bonnard is a source of great pleasure. Too much for the French yo own up to. Too bad their loss.
