I saw this movie when I was 8-years-old, and I have never forgotten. I always thought Meryl Streep's performance in this was beyond brilliant. Such a lovely film.

I love the way he asks her how she is ... "are you alright" ... three words asked with such insight and care.

I always thought Dinesen's writing re: Africa was far superior to Hemingway's.

I absolutely agree that it was beautifully made and directed. Meryl Streep as usual never disappoints. The landscapes and the music were absolutely magnificent!! My best movie ever!!

Giving someone a STD is the most selfish thing you can do. I hate this scene, she didn't deserve it and her jackass cheating husband didn't deserve her.

Sounds like today's loose women masquerading as abortion activists.

Poor Karen. All she wanted to do was reunite with her husband and look what he did to her. Such a beautiful yet poignant movie.

My great-grandmother had syphilis, and she died at age 32 from aplastic anemia caused by Salvarsan.

Doctor: You got syphilis. A Karen: That's not possible!

One of Ireland's greatest actors, Donal McCann, as the doctor.
I always loved the relationship between Karen and Farah. He was so loyal to her. You can see Bror recognize it immediately when he asks Farah where Karen is (as she's preparing to leave for Denmark) and Farah barks back "She can come soon enough!"

I think Farah knew she was sick because of Bror. He was sniping at him out of resentment.

@@2degucitas Oh definitely. He knew Bror was the reason Karen had to leave at all.

I also love ❤️ that this movie shows how strong 💪 most women are under terrible adversity time after time throughout their lives…so many disappointments, but she stayed standing & continued to do whatever needed to get done…One of my all time favorite movies about strong women. And then the beautiful music and cinematography… such beautiful scenes of Africa while flying in that plane ✈️ & such irony that that’s how she lost her one true love ❤️, but she was right…he never really was hers. God allowed her to borrow him for just a time. And now for me, my terminally ill partner/husband (of 25 years) will be buried with the Mother of his children so he really wasn’t mine ever…I just got to borrow him for a very important period of my life. He saved me from despair when my 1st husband walked out on me and our son and daughter. He was my strength for many years, but now I have to find a way of letting go and saying “Good-bye” & hoping it doesn’t kill my will to go on.

I was raised in Nairobi, and then not until later did I recognise the significance of Karen Blixen, and the Suburb of Karen, and Karen Country Club. Suri sana.

Невероятный фильм, невероятно красивая и грустная история любви и одиночества, потерь и приобретения, невероятная по своей хрупкости, достоинству,мудрости и силе духа Мерил Стрип...... На все времена!!!!!!!!!

I was sure in the original movie the last thing she asks the doctor is "children" and he says No.That wouldn't be wise.My dvd also has that deleted.

In my version, DVD, I am pretty sure she asks that. I have an anniversary collector’s edition.

Randolph Churchill died of syphilis and no doubt contributed to his wife's death . Condoms and French letters were available in the day but obviously no one cared. How sad that women were so disposable. Unlike today..
