Im not sure why in the show but in the comics her mom was whisked away to some spirt world because of Rogue's father & his friends, they got drunk & offer her up in some ritual & as a result poor Rogue grows up without her mom all because of her douchebag father I swear is an asshole both in the show & comics. The closet thing Rogue has to a mother is Mystique

well, Mystique never abandonded Rogue, Rogue left her to join the X-men when the brotherhood couldn't help her cope with having not only having Ms. Marvel's powers but Ms. Marvel herself in her head but Mystique definitely left Nightcrawler but at least Rogue & nightcrawler have each other! Always loved the fact they're sister & brother!

Mystique was actually trying to protect Rogue, by having her kill Ms. Marvel. Destiny (a mutant who could predict the future) warned Mystique that Rogue might die at Ms Marvel's hands.

Mystique has probably attempted to bring Rogue back before, possibly by sending her henchman to kidnap Rogue at some point after she joined the X-Men. Xavier likely wiped all trace of Rogue's past from Pyro, Blob, and Avalanche's minds to ensure Rogue's safety. In this episode, Mystique tries a more subtle approach.
