Colin Firth's reaction to the sight of Katherine and Almásy dancing together was brilliant; observation, recognition, sadness and resignation ... all registered in a couple of seconds. Breathtaking.

It's not just that they're talented actors. "Chemistry" is there or it isn't; it cannot be artificially created by putting two pretty people together and letting the camera roll. Another breathtaking example of that "chemistry" is the beach scene in From Here to Eternity with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.

That gaze must have won him the role of Voldemort. 😆 Jokes apart, my love for The English Patient had outlived my love for most things and people in my life, ever since I had watched it sometime in 1998 (film released in 1996). The chemistry they had, the passion and the pain, I can always feel them in the same intense way, whenever I had watched it over the last decades. What a beautiful movie! ❤️

I had a terrible time with Almasy, which (probably) means Fiennes did a good job. I had a hard time with their affair because it seemed so remote and odd. Until he found her dead in the cave of swimmers. When I actually wept. His love for her was astronomical.

I saw it in a dollar cinema in November 1997 by myself. Had just graduated college and was working two temporary jobs while looking for a real job. @@aci1970 Yes I heard when she said that but I took it as though she was just saying for sake of their undercover operation because she wanted to come across as though they really were when they really weren't by law. Anyway, regardless, yes I know they were just best friends (at least according to Katherine but Geoffrey (Firth) was deeply in love with her and therefore why the jealousy so much toward Almasy. Regardless, one of the most wonderful movies to grace the cinematic world to say the least. The cinematography is to die for in this pix as well as the sound score. They couldn't have picked better actors for the lead roles of Katherine and Almasy.

But the first time I watched the movie and heard G. say they were married I thought it was because they had to be for undercover purposes due to their jobs and being there but then realized later on in the movie they actually were but regardless it was a loveless marriage especially on the part of Katherine for the fact that she really fell in love with Almasy and if you REALLY love your "husband" you won't look or allow yourself to feel that way for another man. Masterpiece of a movie to say the least! Cinematography is to die for especially on the BIG screen at the theatre. Soundtrack is the bomb too.
