The fight scene in the Episode IV was very subdued, because they didn‘t fully know how to do the lightsabers yet. So they used reflective tape on poles, which rotated in the lightsaber handle, and hit the blade with light to have at least something on film. Of course this setup was very fragile and they couldn‘t do very much with it. Later they figured out how to do the bladed in post with rotoscoping, so they just used a stick, which could be more stably affixed to the handle. But the fighting style in Episodes V and VI is probably primarily based on Kendo. At least some of the fighting by Darth Vader in these episodes was done by Bob Anderson, who taught countless of actors like Erol Flynn and even Vigo Mortensen for LOTR how to fight with a sword. BTW, the brothers Knoll weren‘t keen on doing the rotoscoping by hand, so they wrote a computer program to do it. This program would later become Photoshop. Ray Park, who plays Darth Maul (the voice is actually Peter Serafinowicz), is a Wushu expert, and it definitely shows. Nick Gillard, the fight coordinator, definitely increased the speed and agility of the fights to make full use of Park‘s capabilities.

I couldn't decide whether talking about this aspect would be a spoiler or not, but finally decided it's actually more of an anti-spoiler, since it's literally something that never comes up again (in movies at least). It's sort of the opposite of what happened in Back to the Future, where Marty's hatred of being called chicken is introduced in the second movie, and instantly becomes his main personality flaw. Here, they drop a bombshell like a virgin birth, and no one's the slightest bit interested to ever follow up on it.

Fun Fact. The music played in the battle against Darth Maul is called Duel of the Fates, it was named such because the outcome of this duel determed the fate of Anakin. Qui-Gon was the mentor Anakin needed, one of the only people other than his Mother to see him as another person and not an object to be traded, slave to be sold, prophecy to be fortold, or forced promise to keep. Mauls victory over Qui-Gon is, without question, the single most important moment in the entire saga.

So some timeline context The Phantom Menace is set in 32 BBY, 32 years *Before A New Hope* and The Battle of Yavin. You also have ABY, After Battle Yavin which is any Star Wars media set After A New Hope. For example Empire Strikes Back took place in 3 ABY so 3 years after A New Hope. BBY is like B.C. "Before Christ" while ABY is like our A.D. "Anno Domini". As you're watching the Prequals these will all be BBY so for the moment don't worry too much about ABY. A New Hope itself is set in 0 BBY/ABY. These movies are set before the formation of the The Galactic Empire so we get to see the The Galactic Republic in action along with the Senate which was mentioned in A New Hope, Stated that the Emperor just disbanded the Imperial Senate not long after the Empire blew up Alderaan. We also see the Trade Federation who are a interstellar shipping and trade conglomerate. There not an evil faction but like you see in the film a few members lead by Nute Gunray have made a deal with an unknown Sith behind the backs of the Trade Federation. The Trade Federation themselves are just a neutral faction in it to make profit from whoever but this film doesn't do the best job at showcasing that. We also get to see the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant which is pretty cool. You actually saw the planet Coruscant in Return of the Jedi within the celebration showcase along with the planet Naboo as well both added in the 1998 re-release just a year before The Phantom Menace released. Coruscant, known then as The Imperial City was originally meant to show up in Return of the Jedi with a more Gothic meets sci fi look shown in concept art but it never made it into the final script for the story. The city was later mentioned in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire and the planet Coruscant was named for the first time from my understanding in both the novel and first spoken in the audio book, later added to video games like Tie Fighter in the mid 90s which depicted the Coruscant/Imperial City as the more gothic look. So when it came time for Lucas to write the prequals he actually really like the name Coruscant keeping it for the film but changing how the name was said.The city visually went more retro futuristic 1950s look mixed with Art Deco look instead of the Gothic look from the concept art. We actually see another one of Yoda's Species in this film, Jedi Master Yaddle who you see in the Jedi High Council chambers as a member of the Jedi Council. Yaddle is the only other member of Yoda's species we see in the films and only appears in The Phantom Menace, Yodas species as a whole are pretty rare it seems. There have been older Species of Yoda in novels and games set thousands of years before the movies from Knights of the Old Republic to the High Repulbic comics and novels set only 300 years before The Phantom Menace. Welcome to the prequel trilogy! 😊 This trilogy is very good. Out of all three of the Star Wars trilogies(original, prequel, and sequel): this is my second favorite behind the original. Love Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn. Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Jake Lloyd are also fantastic as Obi-Wan, Queen Amidala/Padmè, and young Anakin. Loved how you mentioned Hayden Christensen. Don't worry, he'll be in the next one. 😉 Fun Fact #1: A young Keira Knightley played Queen Amidala's decoy. Fun Fact #2: Denis Lawson, who played the Rebel pilot Wedge in the original trilogy, is Ewan McGregor's real-life uncle. One of the things that Iove about this movie is that we find out that Anakin was the one that built C-3PO. He started off with Anakin, and then ended up with his son Luke. The Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul lightsaber duels is one of my all-time favorite lightsaber fights from all of the movies. That coupled with the fantastic "Duel of the Fates" musical score. Absolutely perfect!!!! Definitely looking forward to your reaction for "Attack of the Clones". 😊

The music playing over the amazing Darth Maul fight was Dual of the Fates. The meaning of this was explained so well by Dave Filoni who worked as a director and Writer on The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian someone who was very much the Padawan of George Lucas working alongside him when creating The Clone Wars Animated Series. He said that the ‘duel of the fates’ actually refers to Anakin and how Qui-Gon Jinn and Maul are fighting over the fate of his very soul. Qui-Gon, if he wins, will go on to be the father Anakin never had, and he would therefore never turn to the dark side and plunge the galaxy into chaos. Maul is meant to be seen as evil-incarnate and acts as a proxy for the Emperor who will go on to possess Anakin if Qui-Gon fails. Filoni says this adds a whole different level of meaning to this already cool scene. He goes on to say that it is a direct link right to Return of the Jedi where Luke refuses to kill his father, Anakin, despite the Emperor’s insistence. Just shows how much of an understanding Dave Filoni has with Star Wars working beside the master himself Geoeoge Lucas when they created The Clone Wars Animated TV show that dives into the 2 year gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith providing so much more insight into characters like Anakin and Obi Wan along with side characters as well. It's 7 Season long so I can't expect you to reaction to 100+ episodes. But the show does wonders at expanding every single character you see in these movies along with introducing new characters, lore, planets, and cultures. The Prequals do a great job at laying the ground work solely focusing on Anakin's rise to Darth Vader while The Clone Wars dives into the Clone Wars conflict that the movies kind of skip over.

Filoni was wrong. He is placing his own incorrect meaning on it and positing it as fact. This film is unironically an underrated masterpiece. An experimental art film disguised as a blockbuster (George Lucas had always wanted to create experimental films which inspired him to create Star Wars in the first place). This film does not have a main plot, but instead four interconnected subplots, and it does not have a main character, but interrelated supporting characters, and none of the characters have true character arcs (which is deliberate because it very hard not to develop a character arc when creating a story - even a basic arc, so the lack of any real character arcs is a deliberate artistic choice and to which he would have likely needed to rewrite the script to remove character arcs), this directly reflects the themes of prophesy and fate (Qui-gon Jinn believes in free will but nonetheless adopts Anakin because the prophesy demands it). The main character is the force, and the phantom menace is dark side of the force, which becomes the backdrop for immersion and worldbuilding. Many scenes which are derided are actually brilliant, such as the feeling of tedium and irrelevancy of many of the Senate scenes, which are criticised, but these scenes are purposefully boring the communicate directly to the audience the feelings that people within the Republic have towards the Senate; that it is a tedious and irrelevant institution (which is what the Sith want people to think). This film is very unique in the manner in which it communicates ideas and characters, so it goes over a lot of people's heads. Anakin's performance is insecure and frankly annoying, but this is perfect as the actor directly communicates the feelings of a gifted by emotionally insecure slave-child who in plunged into a world where he is out of his depth. The Phantom Menace is my favourite Star Wars film.

JAR JAR has a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY important role in a later movie, it is a small scene but as I said super important. Also, regarding Jedi and feelings, it is my opinion that Jedi do get angry, but it is not allowing the anger to over power them, look at Luke in Episode 6, he let his anger loose and kicked Vader's butt, but, when he cut off Vader's hand, he backed down and calmed down, then threw his saber away when confronted by the Emperor, thus securing his being a Jedi, which I also think was his trial and why he had to confront Vader again as directed by Yoda.

The reason Maul was so strong is because over a 1000 years, the sith have only focused on the force alone while using some lightsabe style. Watched the full reaction on Patreon and I'd forgotten just how much I enjoyed about this movie. Yes it has issues (Jar-Jar ... ) but it's actually really fun! - Seeing Jedi in their prime and being a real force (hehe) to be reckoned with is amazing. The whole final duel with Gui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul was so awesome and the high energy choreography was a pleasure to watch. Compare that with any of the lightsabre duels in the original trilogy and it just blows them away completely. - Young Anakin was so wholesome. It's tough to find characters played by young actors who aren't super annoying but this was done really well. - The podracing is so tense even when you already know the outcome. Just an amazing and fun chapter of the story. - The unconventional battle with the gungans! I love how it already set up earlier that they have great shield tech and it gets put to good use. It's nice to see a sci-fi battle that isn't just 2 sides with basically just fancy guns, and the droids deploying were so creepy and menacing. - How pathetic the trade federation leaders were 🤣 "Ah Victory" he says gleefully, after defeating an enemy that didn't fight back at all. Although the whole "processing them in camps" aspect of the occupation really did get brushed over a little swiftly for how disturbing that implication is. - Some other thoughts about how scenes are shot to foreshadow future movies that I won't mention here because spoilers. I've really had to re-evaluate how I viewed this movie. If you can look past Jar-Jar (oh boy is that a big ask...) then it's actually pretty good!

The fight scenes were SO epic compared to what the original trilogy had. These fights were so amazing! Young Anakin is on par with how pure and good Luke is (though I would say Anakin is more pure and selfless) I think if I just ignore Jar Jar's involvement, the movie is just SO much better. I quite enjoyed it!

I remember when this was first released, critics claimed the pod race existed solely to sell video games! That it did nothing to advance the plot! When, in reality, it establishes something Obiwan told Luke about his father: that he was a "great pilot." Though we see Anakin's piloting skills thru this trilogy, revealing it now clarifies that it's innate ability, & not the result of his Jedi training!

I’m glad to see you’ll be continuing your SW journey :) There’s so much I want to discuss, but I’m sure others will have beaten me to it lol. Maybe something to note: Anakin never had a father figure growing up, and Qui-Gon was that. As you heard from Obi-wan, Qui-Gon thought outside the Jedi Code and defied the Council, he would’ve been perfect for these strict Jedi you mentioned. Now Obi wan takes up Anakin’s training only as a promise Qui-Gon, and not because he fully believes in the boy. As always, may the Force be with you :)

Fun fact: the "communicator" Qui-Gon uses to talk to Obi-Wan while on Tatooine is made from a Gilette women's razor (sans blade) painted black. Also, the blasters used by the Naboo guards are repurposed Walther LPM-1 air pistols (used for the 10m air pistol olympic competition before pre compressed, or "pcp" guns took over in the latter half of the 1990s) - you can buy those on the used market, and since they're low-powered you can even set up a shooting range indoors (and it's quite fun - high end air pistols and air rifles are real tack-drivers - as in - you can reliably hit thumb tacks with them at 30 yards).

Alright alright, time for some lore about Anakin!!! Im hyped again. Ive watched so many react of these and still love it. You are a fun reactor! I love that you are not afraid of voicing your predictions, love it. Last edit : The sith are always only 2. The reason is because in the past, one sith realised that by being many, most sith are average to mediocre dark jedis. He pondered, why not just focus the power and knowledge of the dark side into 2 beings? With the idea taht the apprentice would eventually overcome the master. Meaning that the power in general would increase over the centuries. That is why, most sith are very very strong in comparison to most jedis. To achieve that goal, the sith had to be whiped out. That event and how it came to be is explained in the Darth Bane Trilogy books.

@BalokLives

It seems my speculation above was basically correct. I always assumed that the Sith were only two because the dark side actually is more powerful. Yoda said they aren't, but he may have been saying that because he didn't want the dark side to be attractive to padawans. Based on what you just said they are more powerful when they limit the number of themselves... More force for me! The Jedi also always say "Bring balance to the force." but to me it seems that the force can only be 'balanced' when there are both light and dark sides.
@MrZackavelli
@MrZackavelli Жыл бұрын
That's not really true. Even if having lots of Sith meant having a bunch of "mediocre dark jedi"; they'd still be useful in the power struggle with the Jedi. The Sith developed the Rule of 2, and this is in George's own words, because the Sith are always corrupt and power-hungry. If there's a bunch of Sith, then they inevitably just fight amongst themselves and end up taking each other all out. The solution to this is simple: have one Sith to possess the power, have one Sith to crave that power, i.e. master and apprentice.

The thing that helps me forgive any plot holes and weak dialogue is to think of Star Wars as tales that have been told and retold over time. Story inaccuracies glossed over, actions and outcomes sometimes clumsily linked, dialogue recounted in absentia. The story's purpose is meant to be a morality play told as a fairy tale, thus the opening title. "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." is meant to transport us away from reality before the story even begins.

Nice reaction! You are quite perceptive and are picking up on a lot of things, some very subtle, that will turn out to be important later. I totally understand your hatred of Jar Jar, I am right there with you, but I think one of the very, very, very important aspects of Episode 1 is to capture a child-like feel for the movie and even how the story is told because ultimately this series is about Darth Vader and this is Darth as a child obviously. It highlights Anikan at this stage of his life, which is I agree, squeaky clean, but also he is a child and is going to view the world as a child. The “silly” aspects of Jar Jar, and even some of the other characters (even 3PO is more silly than usual), is done I think to capture that naive, children’s view of the world and of the telling of the story in this movie for the audience’s sake. You will see that this feeling changes significantly as the episodes continue on. I agree. From all the movies, the light saber duels in Episode 1 are the BEST of all 9 movies.

Some scenes in planet Nabu, were filmed in Italy, near to lake Como. Some of places in Nabu existed in real life. Tatooine film set is in the North of Africa, in Tunisia. Each May the 4th there Star Wars carnival is conducted

Ewan McGregor's uncle is Denis Lawson, who played Wedge, the rebel pilot in the original trilogy who survived to the end. Jar Jar was an unnecessary clown that I didn't care for either, but you'll see much less of him in the next two movies. I think Palpatine was using the dark side of the Force to confuse the Jedi Council, which is why they seemed kind of indecisive and powerless. One of the Sith Lords used the dark side of the Force to conceive Anakin, so it was kind of an immaculate conception.

This is where I bring back the discussion of why it is better to watch the prequels between 5 and 6. You say that Palpatine sounds like the emperor, but if you didn't watch 6 before this you would only have one short scene of the emperor in Episode 5 and would know next to nothing about the Emperor. And those that only watched 5 when it originally came out would definitely not recognize him because it was a totally different character in the original version of 5 (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoPWdX9_hbumn8U)

I have to agree with you about jar jar.🤨 although I don't mind the rest of this trilogy, this film was hard to swallow at its premiere in 1999. I came out of the theater a little disillusioned and thinking that was it? Over the years I've grown an appreciation for certain sequences, the pod race and improved lightsaber fights, but yeah if this trilogy were stretched out into weekdays, it is definitely Monday... that being said, great reaction, enjoy watching you....😉

And yes - not only is this the future Emperor Palpatine (as if the name wasn't enough of a giveaway), he's played by the original actor - Ian McDiarmid.

Jar Jar makes the disney trilogy seem nostalgic, just saying. I aint a massive prequel fan, but I have grown to accept them with time. I enjoy the first half of this movie, being on tattooine and seeing more of the world. I also love Qui Gon, I really missed him going forward. This is prob my fave of the prequels.

Okay, a little tidbit of advice here.... from this movie going forward, you can/should watch everything in chronological order. I'll post it below at the end of this comment. Do NOT discount the animated series, as they contain a LOT of lore and new characters that are important. Also, I'll reply to this comment with non-spoiler information about any questions you might have using time-stamps so that you know what is being referenced. The entire Star Wars timeline (not counting books/comics): Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars (animated series) (except the final 4 episodes, watch those AFTER Revenge of the Sith), Episode III, (Then the final 4 episodes of Clone Wars animated series), The Bad Batch (animated series), Solo: A Star Wars Story, Obi-Wan Kenobi (live action series), Andor (live action series), Rebels (animated series), Rogue One, Episode IV (Yes, watch the original trilogy again, because of the different context you will now have), Episode V, Episode VI, The Mandalorian (live action series, seasons 1 and 2), The Book of Boba Fett (live action series), The Mandalorian (season 3, which is coming in March), Ahsoka (season 1 is coming sometime this year), Episode VII, Episode VIII, Episode IX. Watching in Timeline Order after watching the Original Trilogy is a really good way to fill in all of the details leading up to the events of future shows, no matter which order they were released in.

In terms of "how old is too old", even 3 is considered a little late. Very few Jedi in recorded history started training when Anakin and Luke did at age 9 and 19 respectively.

After this if you want a really good lead up to the prequels. The non canon “Star Wars legends” novel “Darth Plagueis” 2012. It’s incredibly good, though it’s not considered canon anymore I still feel like it’s the better explanation of the lead up to episode 1.
