As an Irish fella working abroad, I discovered these lads during the height of Covid (hard lockdown and trapped in an abusive situation as I can imagine many others were) and they soared my spirits. Their condemnation by the Twitter Nazis and 2FM Artists (How uncool does state-sponsored hip-hop sound?) made me sick to my stomach and when Flashy Flashy came out months after, I really thought the best was behind them. While Babyproof with Offica was an improvement, I think the significance of that track is lost on many but Terminal 1 completely restored my faith. Then came the album. First time in my life did I ever wake up at midnight for a piece of entertainment. I had it four hours before Ireland. 30 seconds into Fat Gangster Laugh and I bought the whole thing.

That said, Man On played on Australian radio, and Loaded was played on 2FM but parts of it were bleeped out.

But I had seen multiple grown adults doing this in 2016 when I was in college. Where was the outrage then? What about the death threats the girlfriend of one of the members received saying things like “You dragged up knacker,” or “I’m going to burn your flat down with you and your family in it”? None of their videos will reach 1M anymore. It doesn’t mean their work is shite, but basically the days of any Irish Artist getting that are well spent unless they become mega stars or are cemented in the UK Drill scene, like a Offica is. Versatile will definitely get the highest views in the country however. If you look at Kojaque’s Town’s Dead, you’ll find it’s a finely directed piece of art too and is an easy contender for Versatile’s videos, with the class special effect of Kojaque’s decapitated head. It’s an easy contender for a Hozier music video too. Basically videos like Ketamine and Prefontaine came out at a time where the whole of Ireland had never seen anything remotely close to it before. The videos were so well directed they could have easily taken on Mainstream artists. But since then, Irish hip hop has exploded and Versatile are no longer the main focus so folks have branched out for other artists. But for lads who were condemned by the Twitterati and dropped from their promotional companies, they’re doing fairly well against the tide.
