Never heard a horse cough before. ❤️💕 Horse care so much to learn

I have a horse with very sensitive terrrible heaves. She cannot have any hay, only fresh grass or alpha grass cubes, soaked. Spring now is affecting her too. Once she starts “heaving” she’s like doing an ab workout 24/7 and loses weight. She doesn’t cough a whole lot but her breathing is terrible. This mare in the video is in really great shape compared to my gal however it only gets worse with age. Mine is 20 years old. Wishing your mare the best!

I too have one who is very, very sensitive. After trying to treat with steroid injection +ventipulmin and equisilon when he had flare ups, he is now having daily monitoring where I count his respiratory rate and he is on inhalers (broncodilater + steroid). Is this treatment available where you are? It really helps. Needless to say he has fully soaked hay and lives out! I am trying to be so vigilant (I even have charts and a graph of his breathing!) because I don't want him to get lung damage. Good luck with your mare, it's heartbreaking when they are in distress and struggling to breathe...

Sarah Mason yes I’ve tried steroids too. And antihistamine. It’s so sad when she gets going but so far keeping her away from hay she’s doing well.

My Vet said all hay should be seen as having mold and wetted down for horses with heaves. But thank you so much for putting thus video out. When the Vet said COPD I panicked. I feel a bit better now that my big boy isn't going to leaving me soon. Thank you for what you share.

Yes I've dealt with heaves. Just like you had to keep arena damp and to be on safe side their hay was soaked. Had one horse that had to wear a inhaler mask. It is manageable...key to me is always to do what it takes for my horses health. Sounds like your vet is right on top of it. Hope she feels and gets better soon. Spring is beautiful and like humans can also get to our 4 legged babes! GOOD luck with your beautiful horse!

Very helpful. My mares been coughing thus spring and never has before I've been thinking the worst and I will definitely water down her hay and continue with the respiratory supplement.

If it helps, this video is a few years old and the horse is doing great with minimal symptoms. Her case is not extreme by any means, but I believe catching it early made a big difference. As soon as there’s any coughing or a change in her breathing, she is medicated, but that’s very minimal. Our hay is fed in a hay chix net and I firmly believe that helps prevent dust inhalation. I hope this helps, best of luck with your mare!

Thanks so much for this video. I just had a horse diagnosed with this and was worried that it would not be something that was very manageable as the vet didnt explain much about it to me. I feel more optimistic about treating her for it now and kind of have an idea a out what possible triggers for it are and how to avoid them if possible . Very helpful!! Thanks again

I’m sorry to hear about your horses diagnosis. If it helps at all, this particular horse is doing great and not on any meds. I find that feeding hay in nets drastically helps because they aren’t putting their muzzles into the pile and inhaling dust. I have had two cases of heaves at my barn that have been what I consider unmanageable. But, they already had a bad case of it when they arrived. Best of luck to you and your horse!

Have a gelding with heaves, have hay netted, if it's really dry out we've even double netted hay, use cough free daily and double dose day before dusty exposure, day(s) of and day after. Have a mix of stinging nettle, raw honey from our area, ginger, garlic...there's another herb I can't remember at this moment we use if we notice a significant flare. We've used Albuterol inhalers and had to get creative in administration. He's still going strong and took reserve highpoint in a low level English and western circuit last year at 22...or 23, lol. We don't stall unless there's a reason. Our arena is treated and we water it year round to keep dust to a minimum. Live in Gaylord, MI.

Hi there, also from MI and my gelding seems to have heaves also. May I ask how you mix all the ingredients you mentioned? When is your guys worst season? Does he have a heave line? Thank you so Much for your time

My horse has had a cough for last few weeks, from February 2021 - today she has heaves and was a bit upset as She is my responsibility. Here in Scotland the weather is coming into spring. she is mostly kept out at pasture and only in occasionally. Hay fed outside. She has struggled with bites and flies in the summer so getting a sweetitch rug. anyway thing the allergy related to inflammation. I guessed it was heaves as her nostrels flaring very slightly with each breath, diaphram heaving and breaths are 57 per minute. Getting vet out to start treatment and get diagnoses

Very informative and helpful...thanks so much. I think my husband is allergic to me, should I not towel off after showering? Just kidding. BEWARE: Any horse in our house could get the Heaves because of lack of dusting...etc.
