I've noticed a lot of questions about the G-forces in the mirrored scenario. Short answer: roughly 60G. However, You cannot reliably compare this number to other crashes. Nor is it the actual amount of G's that Verstappen would have experienced. So prepare for this much too long answer for KZbin. I calculated this for the first impact with the Tecpro safety barrier. The center of gravity decelerated from 241 to 86 km/h in 22 frames at 300 fps, or 73.3 milliseconds. So average deceleration of 587 m/s2, or 60G. But the measured acceleration depends on the settings and position of the Accident Data Recorder (ADR). Detailed info about that thing here: www.fia.com/sites/default/files/8872-2018_accident_data_recorder_-_eng.pdf The ADR has a logging frequency of 1000Hz, so measured peak G will be different, likely even higher. BUT, peak G-force is not the full story, it's more about duration (and about direction as well) that determines how dangerous the event is. Interesting article: media.defense.gov/2017/Apr/05/2001727358/-1/-1/0/B_0113_BRULLE_ENGINEERING_SPACE_AGE.PDF (check page 136 for a nice figure :) Also, this doesn't say how much G's Verstappen actually experienced. He can move around in the cockpit a little bit further and dissipate the force. But a sideways impact would make safety precautions, like the safety belts, etc. less effective for sure. And finally, this exact trajectory is simply one of many possibilities. I based it on previous accidents and it looks realistic, but putting any effort in calculating or researching this ... 🤔 ... well nevermind.

@@luigi695 Rule basically says: "Red Bull too fast in the pits. Red Bull must get slowed down so Mercedes doesn't have to improve by themselves". No but really: Its basically software only changes to the pit crew equipment. 1) The wheelgun is not allowed to signal its done with the wheel fitting if that is actually not the case. 2) The wheelgun mechanics now have to wait for 0.15s before confirming the finishing of the wheel fitting signaled by the wheelgun. This is supposed to prevent mechanics to just press the button anyways in hopes everything is allright. 3) The lollipop light signal thing now also has delay of (I think) 0.2s before the mechanic can confirm the fitting of all 4 tyres signaled by the mechanics beforehand. For changes 2 and 3: If the mechanic presses the confirm-button too early, it simply doesnt count and he has to press it again. This basically will create alot of confusion for the pitcrews and tbh, it will just end up with the mechanics spamming the button, which makes the whole system irrelevant... + making everything slower. It is basically just a rule to slow RBs fast pit stops down, as many rule changes during this season are just that. It is always fascinating to me how the FIA and F1 are letting Mercedes keep their stuff for the whole season, like the DAS system, but every other team who might have a chance in beating them have to change their stuff because rule changes suddenly come midseason (this year with RB: Rear Wing, Pitstops, etc...; 2019 with Ferrari: Engine). In my point of view there should be NO rule changes midseason. Its just stupid.

This isn't even the worst of what could've happened. Had this been what happened he would've been lucky he kinda glanced the edge of the pitwall sideways with only half of his car as that meant there was still momentum and the car kept moving, meaning there was not much deceleration. A little to the right and he would've gone head on into that barrier at full force. The tecpro and car safety would probably have prevented a fatality but he would've felt it no doubt and caused some form of injury...
@gary58523 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, this is worse because in your scenario the car would hit the barrier at s higher speed but the barrier is very thick there so it should do a good job at stopping the car. In this scenario thr car bounces off the barrier and spins in the opposite direction so more force would be on the driver's body

When Grosjean crashed; the 3 biggest questions that arose (and touched on by the commentators) were why the barriers failed to keep its integrity, how did the fire ensue and why the car was split in half so 'easily'. A car split in half also creates 2 objects that drivers have to now watch out for in a hypothetical scenario and also exposes sensitive parts of the car like the fuel cell and ZERO protection from behind the driver of the split vehicle. You can also look it up yourself in 30 seconds or be lazy and spread ignorance to look smart momentarily... I'm pretty sure they've got padding in the cockpit You can see it when on-board with Williams Although this was close to being bad I think people will make crashes seem worse after grosjeans crash
@SuperNick1853 жыл бұрын
@@yourlocalmaoam2420 I know about the padding, but the energy at that speed and the angle seem super dangerous.

To be fair (love the animatio btw) there is a few issues with the video I think we can make out (BTW is my suppositions, just to talk about what ifs) : -Sure if Max would have gone on the left I can clearly say it would have been like this, or even worse, if the car spun a bit more, he would maybe brush the pit wall entry and go rear first into the other barrier, that would have been DESTRUCTIVE driver speaking. Such impact could give real issue to the driver back not to mention the impact dissipation, that could make the wall even fail and break inwards towards the back of the pits, making the response of the car unknown (possibly even launching it either with the front up or so). -One issue with the animation is that like we have seen with Grosejan, the car WILL split in two from the safety cell as designed, despite what Toto Wolff said in the Neflix series as "the car shouldn't split in half" (probably meant 'normally shouldn't split'), cars are made that every part except the safety cell IS MADE to be yeeted everywhere as long as it dissipates the energy of the crash to slow down the car and as well to reduce the backfire to the driver. So let's think the back splits off,that would mean it either proceeded foward and just a bit away from the direction of the cockpit or into the pitlane. While the safety cell could increase the speed of spinning due the lack of the rear, wich could make almost unpredictable how it would smack onto the next wall. The spin is caused due to the hit of the front of the car with the wall, have it hitted lightly more foward it would stop on the spot, and tbh it would have been MUCH worse, almost as worse as the Perez crash in Monaco. -Now on a bit more dark scenario, as the car slips on the track to the wall, the impact is so brutal that the protections could do 2 things: 1- Send the car spinning and flying towards the left side( to the pits) and possibly into the safe gap for marshalls, wich could (like explained before whith the car splitting) send the back end either flying in the pitlane or worse, into the inside barriers (with 50/50 to go over) and make a carnage, if we don't get a fire like Grosejan had. 2- (Very unlikely but plausible seeing what happened with a sidepod accident in Spa with F2) The safety cell failure, we could have a Max losing his legs with a complete destruction of the nose where the legs are, not to mention what else could happen after that part, if the things go as the animation. Remember these cars are HEAVIER than the others, the inertia would be incredible, and so the result of it. Anyway really good job man, love the animations

And think about the aftermath when they would just show this and then quickly change the camera angle and show the red flags and come back to the accident when they know he is okay (hopefully), a bit like Bahrain 2020 with grosjean. Would've been very scary

The biggest problem in this crash would be the lateral crash, the lateral crash is the most dangerous and feared kind of crash, like what happened to Anthoine Hubert in spa 2019

exactly this. And also what if Stolls tire popped a tiny bit earlier in those fast left right corners. That one also could have been alot worse.

And it's not just the pitlane barrier; the catchfencing around the track will be incredibly dangerous if a car goes airborne. We were lucky nothing serious happened to Max and Lance.

Well done! Just one suggestion, a G meter (especially in this video for example) would add a lot.. thanks for the video!
@Eden_24_3 жыл бұрын
That would have been terrible ... Do you got tools to estimate the G Forces ?
@Crashalong3 жыл бұрын
I can do a rough estimate right here. The first impact with the pit entry decelerates from 241 km/h to 86 km/h, that's a difference of 43 m/s. At 30 fps it took 2 - 3 frames to decelerate, leading to 646 - 430 m/s/s, which is equivalent to 66G or 44G. I can compute more accurate numbers, but in this case it doesn't make sense to do so. I took too many liberty's and neglected a lot of unknowns.
@gregonline65062 жыл бұрын
I was really looking for this estimate. I can hardly imagine, that G values of this magnitude are compatible with life (as we know it). Thx for the effort.
@ucheucheuche3 жыл бұрын
I can't stop thinking how much computing power and editing speed is needed for this.

Is it possible to calculate the g-force hitting the pit lane barrier from an estimate of the deceleration? At 1:26, If Verstappen hits the barrier at 240 km/h and slows to maybe 100 km/h than that's a velocity reduction of (240-100)/3.6 = 40 m/s (approx.). In the 6x slo-motion, the velocity change (contact with the barrier) occurs over 10 frames. At 30 fps (or 30 frames per 1/6th second in slo-mo), the time delta (dt) is approx. 1/18th of a second (0.55 s). Therefore it's 40 m/s in 1/18 s (40/(1/18)) which is 720 m/s/s deceleration. If g is 9.81 m/s/s, than Verstappen's impact is equivalent to ~70g. From a quick google search I found that "Beyond 50 g's, the risk of serious injuries or death is significant". So in this case, Verstappen would no doubt have sustained serious injuries. Please correct me if I have made some poor assumptions in my calculation.
