Versus Strikezone: Plo Koon Vs. Sora Bulq (The Fanatical Taskmasters)

When analyzing specific characters, unless I directly reference something else, I am effectively judging the sources in which a specific character appears in a vacuum. Accordingly, I am willing to ignore larger continuity snarls as long as the sources relating to the character in question remain consistent with one another. In the case of Asajj Ventress and General Grievous, the radical differences in their portrayals between the classic Expanded Universe and Star Wars: The Clone Wars make the two sources completely incompatible. In the case of Plo Koon, his appearances in TCW and its tie-ins not only remain generally consistent with the EU at large, but are in fact beneficial, helping to flesh out his character and his capabilities. The reason for this was because Koon is the favorite character of Showrunner Dave Filoni, so effort was put into doing him right, for a change. Though I do find myself wondering, if Plo Koon is Filoni's favorite character, where's the Force Lightning?
Am I cherrypicking? Yes, yes I am.

100% agree. From what I remember when the clone wars was first announced it was supposed to focus more on other characters and less on Anakin’s story. Not sure what happened but we ended up with the reverse. Ahsoka would have been better as Plo Koon’s Padawan, thus leaving the original clone wars timeline intact and still enhancing it by showing the war from her point of view. Most of TCW could fit in with the old clone wars timeline.

Random thought: before TPM Plo's lightsaber blade was orange but around the time of Jedi Power Battles it is yellow. A year before TPM (33 BBY) a fellow member of the jedi Council and friend, Micah Giiett was killed in battle. One of Giiett's lightsabers was recovered and returned to the Jedi Temple. Plo Koon took over the training of Giiett's Padawan Bultar Swan. Could Plo Koon have also removed his own orange crystal and replaced it with the yellow crystal of Micah Giiett's lightsaber?

It is however mastered electric judgement is considered to be lethal and in a battle to the death it’s likely that it would come into play around the mid-late fight, also dooku’s lightning was lethal at its full potency putting plo koons electric judgement on a compatible level not on par mind you because dooku can likely send his opponents flying with it but the effect would be similar

Phoenix Exalt Caedus was brutally injured, he also got smashed by Luke and hasn’t done really anything worthy of note. Dooku > Jacen tbh. Pretty much everything you said is irrelevant as the only weapons they’ll actually be using are lightsabers. Mace has many sources putting him slightly below or above Dooku, who’s pure duelling feats FAR outweigh Jaina’s.

What you're saying may be valid but it's all moot because of the way Mace was set up. Essentially anyone with darkness in them who can't suppress it (Jaina can't like Dooku or Yoda) would be beaten by Windu. He can channel the energy/power from the opposing duelist, essentially meaning he's at their level to begin with. Add on top of that his power and he wins every time. This is perhaps a problem with writing and overall consistency, but in-universe explanations + scenarios almost make Mace invincible. I'm sure you've heard all the bla bla bla about how great Vaapad is a million times so I won't bother, but this battle is pointless. 1. Mace channels Jaina's anger (If he can't he can just channel his own) making him her equal. 2. Mace's power and skill stacked on top of that equaliser, = certain victories.

Account 2 the problem is that jaina no longer fights with her anger if you read her fights especially in fate of the jedi which is her prime she fights cold she becomes a chaotic element on the battlefield yes but that is because of her fighting style not her emotions in her mind she is calm and serene for the entire fight against the sith and it was caedus himself who noticed this, " Caedus streched out with the force searching for the familiar fiery temper and always applied to late the urge to control it all, he found he could not sense those feelings anywhere " -Legacy of the Force Revelation. Jaina was not shut down in the force at this time and in fact was quite open at the moment and this search coincides with her mentally training herself with bevin to not use anger or hatred but to simply lose herself to the fight much in the vein of kit fisto. Now for your point on that mace could use his own anger the first problem is that mace is almost never shown using his anger anywhere love yes anger no so step one would be him to get angry and jaina isnt psychological fighter so she couldnt do that to mace but even if he was angry and drawing on his anger that would stop the super conducting loop. When a user of vaapad starts falling to the datk side and uses his anger you get sora bulq who cannot use vaapad with any real effectiveness because the wjole point of vaapad is to draw in an OPPONENT'S anger and hatred not let it touch you and then givw it back to the enemy now to NJ use vaapad you also need love mace worked around that by loveing the republic but jaina is not throwing out hatred and anger while she fights she is loving the fight sure but she does not hate nor does she draw on her anger not once during the entire battle in the temple did she ever draw on her anger even though especially at the end she had every right to in order to delay Abeloth but she didnt instead facing what she thought was her death with the calm stoic mentality of the jedi master she was. Now im not denying that jaina didnt have her anger issues for a long time but she moved past them and matured by the time of FOTJ which is a year before Crucible which would be where we must use her as it is closest to her prime. ( since of course multiple novels that would have shown us her prime have been canceled due to K-cannons meddling)

Yes but the point you're missing is, Windu has never needed to draw on his own anger because he defeats all his opponents with skill, power or channeling their fury. He's duelled, Bulq, Vos, Ventress, Palpatine, etc. and not once was he required to do anything particularly insane. Mace doesn't draw on his own anger because he has never needed to, he's always beaten the opponent by channeling their rage. Why you think Jaina is any different to the rest of the group is beyond me. She doesn't need to be a psychotic darksider for him to get the power he needs, she isn't Sidious. Look This isn't a concession, but I don't have a particular interest in either character and rather dislike Jaina so I hope you can find someone interested in them both to debate against because you seem to be passionate about them. +Jensarrai1 Honestly, this matchup does not really interest me that much. Plo Koon is great and all but I don't find Bulq that intriguing as an opponent for Plo Koon. That being said, your ability to make your arguments concise has improved and your production is still as great as ever. Physicality: I don't know what makes you consider Plo stronger than Bulq. Shouldn't Bulq's youth afford him superior strength? Also, while Bulq lacks composure that doesn't mean he's Exar Kun glass cannon who throws a fit when he gets hit. Hes a berserker. A crazy angry beast paired with natural superhuman toughness. Dueling: Bulq as a duelist always intrigued me. He couldn't mentally master, but he was able to master the physical technique. His style is essentially a randomized mixture of all 7 classical forms+physical technique of Vaapad executed with the mentality of a Juyo berserker making Bulq a tier 3 functioning swordsmen but with tier 1 skill. Darth Bane said something like, "remember you are a Sith, not an animal" and Bulq is an animal (though extremely skilled). The only issue I have with your verdict is addressing that Bulq's developed skill is superior to Plo Koon and the possibility of Bulq bulldozing through Koon's defense. Ventress has dexterity, Savage has strength. Bulq might not have either of these traits to their level, but he has a mixture of both strength and dexterity+superior skill. While Koon's style is more balanced and backed by greater tactical prowess, his conservativeness can be a problem against Bulq's all out rushdown assault. Force abilities: Plo Koon's training background is something that caught my interest when I first read about him. Loved the idea of Jedi or Sith training under different force organizations allowing for unique abilities and development. Bulq's inadequate sense abilities I feel are being sold a tad short though (not that it matters in the verdict). Yes he couldn't track Tholme after Tholme made his escape, but Bulq found Tholme the first time and the only other person who could find the Spymaster was Vos (Tholme's former apprentice). Bulq using Azati master assains to me does not mean a lack of self confidence. But instead, thoroughness and proper planning (as ridiculous as that sounds for someone like Bulq). Oppo is one of the greatest telepaths whose sense abilities are in the top tier of the Jedi Council and could contact all the other Jedi near by for aid at the first sight of trouble. So Bulq used the Anzati to give him a margin of error to work with. No complaints about your verdict on their force abilities because I have the same thoughts but just wanted to give credit where its due. Final Verdict: I agree that Plo Koon takes majority in this match but I think its primarily due to Koon's superior tactical abilities and broader variety of force abilities. Looking forward to the Post Mortem and your analysis was extremely on point. I have an idea for a vs matchup that Ive had some difficulty with: Admiral Ackbar (prime EU version) vs Kenobi with highground

I greatly enjoyed this video, as it was a matchup that, going in, I didn't know who would win. There are solid arguments for Bulq's victory, namely his weapon set and more frequent use of his force powers. Though, in the future, I'd say that you don't always need a title. This matchup is interesting for the ways that Bulq and Koon interact as combatants, not their differences as characters. If you don't mind, I'd like to make a request for a future short. Malgus slaughtered notable masters like Ven Zallow and Cao Cen Darach and if I'm correct he was able to kill 2 jedi after Satele smashed him into a hill hard enough to blow it up. Which means he was more dead then alive. You can call me crazy, but from my opinion Malgus is basicly the Vader of his time. He is THE war hero of the sith empire. Shaak Ti has no chance.

I think the no lightning is because in the canon, Force lightning is considered a darkside power. In legends it can be used without the darkside through focused training and the lightning used by Plo Koon, was a unique lightside variant as well.

He has an entry in the sourcebook, _Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds,_ which reveals something about his powers that has drastically elevated my estimation of him. (Look up pages 129-30.) While doing a breakdown of the martial abilities for Asajj Ventress, I began to wonder whether or not she learned anything of Vaapad from Sora Bulq. While not an outright user of Form VII, could she have at least learned some of the basics? Given their sparse numbers when compared with the Jedi, surely it would make sense to give the Dark Acolytes any advantage over their enemy as much as possible. While Count Dooku instilled the duelling centric Makashi in his Acolytes, Sora Bulq could have instructed them in Vaapad knowing that only three Jedi know it fully: and only one would pose a threat to them, Mace Windu. And, like Kas’im, would Sora have taught them just enough to still have an advantage over them should any of the acolytes go rogue?

I have a request, I have noticed that you use or bulk quite often and when you do use the dark side crazy animalistic iteration who in my personal opinion can no longer win a fight for love nor money, He may still have great skill but as you have pointed out he falls into animalistic Furious rages that leaving wide open for less skilled opponents to take advantage of. My request is that you use or bulk pre dark side, before his decline or around the time he met with Mace Windu and the other Jedi dissidents, as I feel with a calm state of mind and his level of skill is one of the most prestigious swordsman in the whole temple I feel he would be a much more fitting match for most of the opponent's that he has already faced or could face and future. I like certain aspects of this character and feel now even though he is still interesting he has still become one dimensional. I was hoping that eventually he could win one of your vs rounds with someone at least as I think the pre DarkSide Sora bulk would outclass the dark side animalistic rage filled frenzied pawn that he became. Maybe a Sora Bulq vs Sora Bulq, If you would be able to make either of these happen it would be incredible.

IDEA: Jedi Sentinel vs Emperial Royal Guard. Sadly the best example of the Royal guards actually fighting was in TLJ, but thankfully there's plenty of Legends material covering them too. Temple Guards were probably trained in Form 6 to accommodate all their other force and espionage training, so I wonder how they're abilities would stack up against the Redguard's?

I’d love to see Qui-Gon Jinn vs Rahm Kota. Their fighting styles and methodology are quite similar, and I go back and forth on this match up.

I put my money on Kota. His fighting style is more versatile and concidering that he ripped appard the tower in which he fought Galen Marek with his force abilites, he is possibly the stronger force wielder. Qui Gon Jinn was brought to the jedi order like most others: as an infant. And he spend his entire life in the order. Kota was a child soldier and when he reached the age of 18 he was allready a formidable warrior and leader. And don't forget this: When Kota fought in the arena of Cato Neimoidia he fought a krayt dragon, Corellian razor hounds, Corellian slice hounds, an acklay, a Feeorin gladiator, and stormtroopers. Qui Gon on the other hand learned in relative safety and fought in at least 3 battles (stark hyperspace war, and The Yinchorri Uprising and the battle for Naboo), while Kota's Life was war. Lightsaber skills: Qui Gon Jinn mastered Ataru. And even if he overcame most of its weaknesses it is still only one fighting style. Kota's arsenal includes Shii Cho, Shien and Juyo. Darth Maul proved how effective Juyo worked against Qui Gon Jinn. Since Kota is the more experienced fighter, and perhaps the more powerfull force wielder, Master of multiple styles and posesses a toughness which could rival Obi Wan Kenobi's I don't think that Qui Gon would have much of a chance.

Boring combatant selection, but quite interesting match! I suspected Plo to come out victorious but it was still an exciting surprise. He has such a balanced skillset and keen mental composure, that he is never to be underestimated. I've always viewed Bulq to be a surprisingly and painfully blunt top melee specialist. I think his pure melee style is held back by using two blades. Ultimately I do not see Kel-Dor as significantly less durable than Weequay. And there were a few missing elements left out of this analysis. A few that come to my mind now are: - Plo has extensive knowledge of unarmed combat. - Kel-Dor though having fists perfectly capable of martial arts, their fingers are nimble. This puts a toll on grappling and hilt gripping. - Plo having force amplifying claws on his middle fingers. Losing them is roughly almost as much of a tactical detriment as his mask. - Bulq had the opportunity to study more dark side melee techniques more intimately than just how to counter them. This also means he is user of the dark moves while knowing how light siders counter them.

No, no, no. Kenobi doesn't have a weak force wall. Dooku is an absolute master of telekinesis, he was suffering from a debilitating toxin when Ventress broke his defences and TCW Maul in a alternative universe (canon) was amped up by force rage. Kenobi is the superior force wielder capable of more subtle manoeuvres such as manipulating Anakins mechno-arm and using force repulse to obliterate durge.

J Obi Wan is not superior to Plo Koon in the force. Both use telekinesis in intelligent and practical ways but there is simply more to Plo Koon. Plo Koon has several offensive force abilities ranging from debilitating to letal. Plo Koon and Obi Wan both use tutiminis as a defensive ability so that cancels out. Plo Koon however uses Malacia a force ability to induce nuasea and sickness in targets and has the ability of force lightning called by him "Electric Judgement".

I find it extremely difficult that jedi council level force users can damage characters that can withstand a explosive mass of a continent when they sometimes struggle to preform building feats from time to time. What people actually forget when scaling jedi and sith to Yarael Poofs feat in the Zam one shot comic is that very shortly before Yarael supposedly performed the feat was the fact that he was stabbed by a weapon that might not even be up to the duration of a building. There's so many problems into scaling them to such a high level that it should be almost unthinkable in scaling them there with only ones that are just under to grandmaster/emperor level force users being to able to do it. Heck there were even non-force users that survived a full blast from darth malgus, a human named Jace supposedly survived the power of 10 times + nuclear warheads. And don't me started with people scaling Darth malak to the star forge that was just a load of crap.

Mundi, close fight. Better defense and speed feats based on his performance against Grievous on Hypori. Malgus. Jedi team has comparable saber skill but no real answer to Malgus' extreme durability or Force powers. Very close. Anakin is stronger and a (slightly) better swordsman, but if Kun digs into his bag of tricks (Trakata, Sorcery, Amulets), gg. Could go either way but leaning Krayt. Better swordsman, more experience, comparable in the Force but slightly greater range of combative powers. Caedus' sheer durability and alternate weaponry have to be factored in though. Bulq. Assuming he doesn't go berserker, his technical skill arguably exceeds Malgus and little Zallow has would surprise him. Grievous. Darach has the skill but lacks the speed or stamina to keep up with the General, and his TK isn't powerful/focused enough to disable him. Sith. Plagueis is a big threat by himself, we don't have enough on Tenebrous but it is safe to assume the master and apprentice would be at least comparable in power, Yoda would be hard pressed to contend with both. No idea.

Only major non-Force sensitive opponent I can remember for Anakin was Durge. He never met Grievous, the Fetts, etc. I'm sure there were others but I can't recall off the top of my head. Anyway, it isn't so much that Ulic *could* take on a Jedi without the Force but the ease he did it with and who his opponent was. Sylvar may not have been a top tier opponent but dueling a Force-sensitive Cathar (who are superhuman even before augmentation) is no joke.

I have to say, I really don't agree with this one. I love Plo and will defend him till the day I die, but Sora Bulq is a great example of a generally lesser combatant packing the right skill set to overcome a generally greater one. As far as physicality, there's really no contrast. Plo does well for what he is, but his maximum capabilities are those of a somewhat fragile, though mentally indomitable master past his prime. He's able to augment his abilities so that he can stand against a peak human combatant, i.e. Anakin Skywalker, but Bulq has additional advantages that simply put him past that level. His species grants him all the advantages you list--and those advantages MATTER, especially with somebody like Plo who's going to try and slug it out. Sora Bulq is stronger, more durable, and boasts greater endurance (yes, those are different things) and the few real advantages that Plo can leverage, Bulq can at least keep pace with it. To expand on Rob's point, also in comments, the fact that Bulq goes all-out as a berserker doesn't make him fragile. It makes him all the more dangerous, and when you input the factors of incredible strength and fortitude that he possesses, it puts him leaps ahead of Plo. Regarding saber combat, the matchup between these two really doesn't seem to be in Plo's favor. We know he leans more toward Shien, and while that style would actually be my first choice in combating something like Shii-Cho or Djem So that relies upon full-commitment power blows, it matches up really poorly with Juyo. (Yes, I know Bulq is credited with mastery of all forms, but let's be real. He's a Juyo fighter.) The latter form isn't angular like Djem So, it's about leveraging every opportunity in order to accomplish one goal: Cut. Cut the opponent, cut their skin, cut their heart, cut their robes, cut their blade, CUT by whatever means necessary. Shien can hold out against that, but it has no retaliatory power, and in Plo's case he can't hold out indefinitely. He just doesn't have the stamina. With regard to Plo's use of Djem So, this gives him a better option, though it's likely the weaker of his two pairs in a general sense. But even still, Plo's power strikes won't break Bulq--he can deal with them. And Bulq, extraordinarily mobile fighter that he is, isn't going to stay in one place long enough to leave himself open to the kind of slow, measured counterattacks Plo favors. Take the two styles, Djem So and Juyo, not just in their theoretical sense but with regard to how these two apply each one, and Plo's simply not packing enough heat. Force abilities are one place I do lend the advantage to Plo. His abilities are more versatile, and while he lacks the willingness to dominate through sheer strength that Bulq possesses, he's subversive and wily as all hell. His passive barriers are sufficient to nullify, or at least minimize, the damage Bulq can do to him, and he's not going to respond in kind. He's going to look for openings, which Bulq will inevitably present, and because his Force abilities aren't hampered by limited reach like his lightsaber abilities, I do see Plo having more luck here. This is especially true with Electric Judgment--I can only see Plo getting one or two good hits off before Bulq wises up, but if Plo makes the most of them, those could very well turn the fight to his favor. Same goes for telekinesis and the rest of his abilities. As for sabers...well, if you give Bulq his shoto it's no contest. And, by right, I give Bulq his shoto. I'm not saying this is an easy fight for Bulq. It's not, and any kind of egregious mistake on his part will get him seriously injured or killed. But I can't bring myself to believe that Plo will be able to force that kind of mistake, and barring that, it's going to be a slow, churning match that will break Plo down before it breaks Bulq. In essence, although the styles don't match up, this fight is a diet can of ROTS Skywalker against a diet can of Dooku. And given what we know about Plo Koon and Sora Bulq, it'll likely go the same way.

Nice analysis. I still lean towards Plo winning (mainly on the back of Force powers) but I don't think it's quite as one-sided as Jensaarai paints it. Physicality is a big point against Koon here and Bulq's sheer ferocity is enough to tax that. Throw in Sora's extra blade and Plo will spend a good amount of time on his back foot. He can still catch Sora out if he overextends his offense but it won't be easy.

Those two are very lopsided... Dooku is easily superior to Shaak and Kun ragdolls Kenobi without a thought. There would have to be some strict regulations for those fights to be 'fair'

TheNuisanceBird Not really. Maybe to the like Soria Bulk and others who have used it Mace was better with it but didn't truly mastered it. He never really fully tested it out. Especially the super conducting loop part of the form. The only time he reached the full potential of that form was against Sidious and it wasn't enough to me Sidious immense power overload Vapaad and push Mace to his breaking point which in turn cause him to get tunnel vision and possibly step in the darkside. These two video's I've seen over and over to me is the best example of how powerful Sidious was and how that not even Vapaad was enough.

Idk man, Plo Koon may be more viable in an overall combative way, but I think that Sora could out fence him one on one. I'm also unsure about how effective Koon's lightning would be. I doubt that it was as powerful as Dooku's, but more pressingly, once bitten, twice shy. I think Sora would see Koon and adjust his defences for lightning. Either way, I loved how you presented your views.
