Final Year Project; Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
This is a tutorial to create the 2D geometry of a VAWT using CATIA. (You might want to pause during the video, a lot)
Fluid Analysis is then done on the turbine using ANSYS; a sliding mesh setup is used. The turbine can be optimized using ANSYS, and the results can be used for creating velocity contours and to control servo motors using LabVIEW.
A VAWT prototype is available at the end of the video with a demonstration of how a shaft encoder and servo motors work to control the turbine blades.

Greetings, I've made a similar simulation of a VAWT for my master's degree thesis, which I have already delivered and passed. One of thing that I haven't able to do was scripting a user define function that makes the angular velocity a dependent variable to the Tip-Speed-Ratio, wind turbine radius and the wind's linear velocity. Can you tell me how to do that in a step by step tutorial? Because I am terrible in programming language, very badly.

Thank you, very good tutorial about this type of turbine. I have a question: 1.- Could you tell me which is the geometry you selected in each Edge Sizing and Face Sizing? 2.- Why you created Interface 1a and 1b? thanks!!! :)
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 8 жыл бұрын
+Gaspar Sanchez 1.- I started with blade 1, 2, 3 edge sizing (the edges). After that the three circles (inner) then three circles (outer) then big circle (inner) then big circle (outer) then the big square. All of them are edges not faces. As for the inflation, I selected the three faces between the blades and the three circles. The boundaries are the three blades. 2.- You do this so you can allow the turbine and the blades to rotate in there circles. (there are four interfaces, so four inner circles and four outer circles) You use it in Mesh Interfaces.

Greetings, I remember doing int a and int b on the inner and outer circles of each component that wants to rotate around itself, like the turbine blades. I'm not sure why though, I saw it done in other tutorials involving rotation of turbine blades.

+aditya singh there is an optimized angular velocity for each blade during each increment, so I changed the angular velocity of each blade manually at each increment. For fluid 3,4,5, in cell zone conditions, the speed (rad/s) is changed from zero to a certain value.
@prasenjit8741
@prasenjit8741 9 жыл бұрын
+MechanicalSpoon Thank you for your quick reply. The optimization has been done manually by changing (rad/s), matching to get max Cm (Cm1 +Cm2 +Cm3) or by using any other optimization method for three blades rotating simultaneously.

Thank you, very good tutorial, but I have some questions: 1. How did you specify the element size in both edge and face sizing? 2. In Fluent setup, you set a moment monitor for 3 blades, but when you called moment Cm results from text file, Which should contain 3 columns for Cm results, into excel file, the text file were only contain one column for Cm results. did you recalculate the cm results before importing into excel? 3. Is the Matlab code, which you used to plot Cp vs TSR, applied to calculate Cp or torque ( line 4 in the code)?
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 9 жыл бұрын
+Gebreel Abdalrahman 1. Concerning the mesh, I think it's better to only do edge sizing 2. When you select blade 1, 2, 3, the it writes the total sum of the moments on the three blades, so it gives only 1 column. 3. it is used to find Cp
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 9 жыл бұрын
+Gebreel Abdalrahman Apparently Cm is coefficient of Moment. I found out just recently from a forum when helping a friend; Cm is not the moment. So to find Cp curve, it is: Cp = Cm * TSR If you want to find the moment, there is an equation for Cm related to it. (you can find it online) but if you only care about Cp, I think you just need Cm
@gebreelabdalrahman3990
@gebreelabdalrahman3990 9 жыл бұрын
+MechanicalSpoon Tank you, actually, I've used Cp = Cm * TSR, and Cp=T*omega/(0.5*rho*A*V^3), where Cm,avg=average(cm1+cm2+cm3)/N and T=Cm,avg*0.5*rho*A*V^2, but the results were slightly different. Could you please contact me? gyk2005_sh@yahoo.com

@gabrielalejandropandiellar8746
@gabrielalejandropandiellar8746 8 жыл бұрын
+UrbanZakapa01 Because air and water are fluids that behave very similar at typical conditions. Also it's easier to calculate when the density of the fluid is greater. Air density = 1.225 kg/m^3 VS Water density = 1 000 kg/m^3. No compitition.

Please, what are the reference values you use? I obtain so high cm and I think I have a problem with reference values. In a 2D simulation like this, shouldn't be Depth = 1 m; Length = R (Rotor Radius); Area = 2Rh (2*Rotor Radius*Depth) = 2R ?
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 8 жыл бұрын
+Fruity Moon yes those should be the reference values, i used length = 1m, Rotor Radius=0.4m, Area=0.8m I picked these values based on the radius of the turbine which was 0.2m.

amazing job !!!!! as I could understand from this video is that the simulation shown in 7:20 is the result of the work made from the beginning, right ?? I made approximately the same thing with a Savinous model but I made the geometry directly on ANSYS but I think that my turbine is fixed and that's my problem , I want it to be a moving one, what should I change to solve it?? I'll be waiting for your help , thanks
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 8 жыл бұрын
+asma BKH Thanks alot; if you want the turbine to move (rotate) you need to make the setup transient. If you pause the video a bit, you can see details of how the setup should be to make it move (you need to do things like copy to mesh motion, set the time step size and number of time steps and maybe other things)

what is omega turbine? is it some sort of code to calculate the relative blade velocity?
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 9 жыл бұрын
+Kashif Naseem omega turbine for fluid 2 is the input parameter used so i can change the turbine velocity and create multiple cases; TSR = omega turbine * turbine radius / fluid velocity In this case, fluid velocity is kept constant at 0.16 m/s, and turbine radius is also constant at 0.2 m
@kashifnaseem220
@kashifnaseem220 9 жыл бұрын
+MechanicalSpoon thank you for the quick reply. Yes, I actually got that as the video progressed. One question, the value of the time step size in the parameters, how did you divide the specific numeric by TSR? how did you get that specific number? currently i have FYP presentation tomorrow, and i was hoping to get the net torque of a darrieus VAWT from the moments, do you have any idea how can i go about doing that? Thank you once again. Looking forward to your reply.
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 9 жыл бұрын
+Kashif Naseem Time(t) = Number of Time Steps(N) x Time Step Size(T) Omega Turbine(w) = Distance(d) / Time(t) TSR = Omega Turbine(w) x Turbine Radius(r) / Fluid Velocity(V) You can use these equations to get w= TSR*V/r and T= d*r/TSR*V*N where in this case d= 360*3 = 1080 degrees; N = 1080 steps; r = 0.2 m; V = 0.16 m/s I wanted the turbine to rotate three revolutions, that's why it is 360*3 As for the net torque at each time step, i used a moment output parameter on the three blades (you select blade 1, 2, 3 and check the "write" box as seen in the video, this gives you that total moment at each time step) The moments are written in a file and you can plot them in excel or matlab, or use them for something. Hope this helps, good luck in your presentation.

+MechanicalSpoon oh that clears alot! I have run the simulation but I am sorta not satisfied, cuz one last thing is bothering me, if you would clear it out, i would along with many others here would highly appreciate it. when you set fluid 3, 4 and 5 relative to fluid 2, you keyed in some Rotation-Axis Origin (Relative) x and y co-ordinates. like for fluid 3 and blade 1 its x = 0, y = 0.1, for fluid 4 and blade 2 its x = -0.08660 and y = -0.05... from where are you establishing such co-ordinates? I could only guess but I am not sure. sorry for spamming questions after questions, looking forward to your reply. and thanks for the good luck :D
@MechanicalSpoon
@MechanicalSpoon 9 жыл бұрын
+Kashif Naseem those co-ordinates are from the center of the turbine, or the axis of rotation (x=0,y=0). Blade 2 (which is fluid 4) for example has these co-ordinates: x=-0.1cos(30) y=-0.1sin(30) [there is 120 degrees between each blade] Btw the turbine radius here is 0.1 m not 0.2, my bad. I don't mind the questions.
