Vertical Hydraulic Brush Mower. In this video we build a Vertical Hydraulic Brush Mower to maintain the trails at Edward's Creek Ranch. We often need a fast efficient way to cut back the overgrowth along over 7 miles of trails. We take a standard 5 foot brush hog, put it on its side, slap on a hydraulic motor, and let it eat. Is this even Legal?
Equipment Utilized:
Bobcat T595
Bobcat E42
Lincoln wire feed welder
Hydraulic Supplies:
Supplier - Surplus Center
Hydraulic Ag Motor with PTO Output - 7.63 cu in
One Way Valve - 1/2" NPT 18 GPM 65 PSI Check Valve
Miscellaneous hoses and fittings in 1/2" NPT
Carrier - Miscellaneous steel pipe and angle iron

Great idea! Far more durable than anything that’s on the market and it seems much more efficient!

Our County Road Crew uses similar commercial built vertical mower. It does make fast work at clearing overhanging limbs. The problem is this type vertical mowers leave a nasty mess of "beat to hell" stubble that is an eyesore for months after the cut.

This is what you get when you take the "NEVER DO THIS" list out of the safety manual, and then you build a machine to DO all the things on the list. Never mow with the deck raised. Check! Never mow what you can't see. Check! Never defy gravity. Check! Never over-speed the mower. Oh heck yeah! Awesome. Love it.

Florida DoT as well as my local township use machines with basically this same kind of mower on an articulated boom that lets them do the same thing. The township uses a really wild machine that almost looks like an insect. Just wanted you to know that you're approach isn't too crazy. Great job on the fabrication and using it to clear the trails!

The motor came from Surplus Center (surpluscenter.com). I used the 7.63 cu in PTO Motor item #9-7368-125 $400.00. Shipped to me within 4 days. Our skid steer flows at 17gpm. Working just fine so far.
