Today we're taking a look at my friend Marco's system, the Aponix vertical barrel growing system. It can be either soil or hydroponic, but you'll see me set it up as a hydroponic system in this video.
Vertical hydroponics is one of the THE MOST PRODUCTIVE ways to grow in small, urban spaces due to its high yield and low footprint.
What I like about this system is that the parts are mostly available at hydroponic retailers or Amazon, unlike fancier systems like the Tower Garden which try to lock you in to their products and nutrients.

A couple of things here. 1) At 15:50 you tell us that you're going to cut to results after a few weeks, but the next - and final - shot is a startup shot and an exit. Nobody knows how it turned out. 2) A sticker price would be helpful. 3) A discussion of rotating that unit for even sun exposure would be helpful. I'm trying to come up with a method to automate that but I'm stuck on how I'd prevent tangling the pump cord. If anybody has a thought I'd love to hear it.

I have 3 extended towers from TG running in tandem. I am selling them as I believe that a better design must be out there. Solo units like this one, used in warm climates like Florida, suffer from evaporation. You can lose 2-3 gallons a day which causes havoc with your nutrient concentration. The base of this unit has a reservoir that barely covers the pump with solution. This unit would run dry after 3 days in my climate. I have not purchased as yet from Aponix, but I have to independently give Marco a lot of credit. He has responded to every question I have asked and is genuine in his enthusiasm for this science. This looks like a wonderful indoor or more temperate climate set up and is the best that I have seen so far.
@atomizer2665
@atomizer2665 5 жыл бұрын
The combination of non sealed planting sites and cascading water is a good recipe for large evaporative losses, not to mention light (or destructive bugs like root aphids) getting direct access to the root zone. My towers cope ok outdoors in full sun with air temps upto 100F and the evaporative losses are minimal. If you run towers outdoors in the sun you have to come up with a way to mitigate internal heating.

A couple of design points for discussion: 1) The plant roots will get tangled, so it may not be good for staggered planting. It might be OK for harvesting everything at once, though, as it will be one huge root system. 2) Did I miss where he secured the top to the bottom, or did it just set on top? Seems like a storm may blow the top over. 3) As others have said, that's a small reservoir for 58 plants. 4) The surface area of the exposed nutrient solution on top will increase the evaporation rate. This along with a small reservoir and 58 plants will have you refilling the nutrient solution multiple times per day when it's hot. 5) The top has the nutrient solution exposed to light. Nutrients plus light equals algae. 6) Algae growth plus tiny holes equals plugged holes. Plugged holes equals starving plants. To be honest, it appears the engineer/designer that came up with this idea has never grown anything hydroponically, nor vertically. All items can be remedied with a redesign, but the mental giant who set the price needs a reality check. At $1400 per tower, it will have a 5 YEAR PAYBACK! That's not something you can redesign, unless, of course, your crop is Lowrider cannabis.

This looks like a great system. (And I’m much, much more likely to buy from a brand that doesn’t lock me into expensive, hard to find proprietary replacement parts - especially when there’s the risk of them stopping making that part, or them going out of business.) HOWEVER the price is prohibitive. It’s double the maximum I’d be willing to pay, at best... and I’d guess triple to quadruple what average buyers would look to spend. Correct me if I’m wrong (and I apologise if I have got it wrong) but that set-up lists for €495 - plus there’s the price of the pump at about €25 and shipping, not terrible for those of us who live relatively near them geographically, but still a fair amount extra to consider when the price is already very high... For USA buyers, shipping is a heavy extra consideration and I’m guessing there’s some some sort of customs charge on top of that. Although the system greatly improves efficiency, even for a home farm, one would look to have multiple units. I don’t buy cheap, but I cannot see anyone other than a wealthy hobbiest or a professional grower who must use this type of system for some reason (??) finding this practical.... Maybe it’s for well-off apartment dwellers? Sorry to be negative, but the price kills what seems like a perfect product to me... Again sorry if I’m totally missing something, or if this is meant for some type of specialist grower where this is just the norm.

@@bradsimpson8724 Keep the base with the reservoir and electric pump static. Use water pipe fittings that can rotate. Then the hard part is rotating the bottom wall on up. Alternatively, use a solar panel on top with a DC water pump so you can rotate the whole unit, potentially with static grid power.

VERTICAL SYSTEMS ARE JUST AWESOME! It's too bad they are most often way over priced. I'm working with a 3D Printer group..and we're exploring this right now.. However, technically... you could take an existing food grade water barrel.. and create a very similar set up for the body. Water Barrels can be found for about $25.00 each.. pumps are pretty cheap..$30 for a good one..and one that you could control the water flow. Note...if you cant find or afford one that has a water flow adjustment..that's an easy fix.. Simply extend the tubing till the water flow is gently spilling out the top of the tube..this will requires a support tube (pvc)... You'll likely need to pay close attention to the actual head height listed.. most of them..will work for standard barrel height.The rest of the materials are readily available, and very cheap...Dont forget to put a timer in line with your set up. Cant find a standard 55 gallon water barrel? Simple fix: You can stack 5 gallon food grade buckets..technically they're like rings. Just use the lid to create a lip for each bucket..cutting away the center part.. I created a little different method on mine, but the lid will work, just make sure you are allowing the water to drain all the way down to the reservoir.. You'd be amazed at how many 2" net cups you can get in a 5 gallon bucket.. I did mine 4 buckets high. Each bucket is about 15" tall, but you loose about 3/4" when you stack.. so just shy of 5 feet tall nice height.. I did not use the bottom bucket for plant material.. So 3 buckets were full of plant materials. This concept is the Garden Tower/Tower Garden version but only with a much larger circumference. Those units of course are ridiculously priced..

Sorry Marco.. I was indicating.. at the end of my post..that the bucket towers were like the garden towers.. However.. I've got a couple of friends who own several of the tower gardens.. and it's just a pump, sitting in a reservoir of nutrient fluids on a timer..the water pumps up to top and trickles through..to each plant spot..on a timer..and they have the fancy lights to help with growth on their indoor unit.. We tested the 5 gallon bucket towers using the exact same nutrients, same a timing..same seeds.. and the ran equally and produced equally...Bucket set up cost well Under $100 and the Tower..Over $500.. But the tower looks a little prettier than the buckets..rofl..

On Craig's list Yes. there are.. make sure they're prior food use and clean well. The barrels are a little thicker walled than the 5 gallon buckets...so a little more elbow grease to drill holes out...But you have cut out the bottoms of each bucket that you stack..so trade offs... I like the bucket stack a little better, but both are great. Freight Harbor is where I get my fountain pumps & timers.. I've got $15.00 pumps that are 3 years old and still working! ..I also run most of off of solar.. these little pumps require so little electricity..it's an easy set up. Have fun..grow food!

@mtt14g
@mtt14g 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel! Like in every hydro system, you usually sanitize and sterilize after every cycle. That could be rinsing, brushing or power washing the elements disassembled into levels. Ideally when you do that you have a good use for the nutrient solution that you dispose (irrigate your raised bed or the like). If you are running such a system indoors and maybe multiple barrel units you will probably automate sanitation like using a UV-C lamp, oxygenation or filter mechanisms that help you extend the the duration things stay clean and healthy. Learning soilless gardening is its own discipline and can be a nice skill. For a hobby grower any plant production in bags or raised beds is probably more robust and versatile.

Very informative video. Interesting system that's developed. Hope you show us an update soon to see how happy you are with the system. Are you planning on putting a shade over it to protect it from some of the SD heat, like aluminet?

The price is 498 euros plus 160 euros for shipping. The reason they dont show price is because its meant to be a b2b sale (business to business). So it's pretty expensive.

Thanks for the video! One thing that bothers me though, is the size of the reservoir. Why not put a 30ga.l bucket in the center and put your pump inside there? Even with a soil system, not all the space is going to be used. In addition to providing a bigger reserve, this would reduce the surface area open to evaporation. And probably as essential as the previous enhancements, the reservoir can be sealed reducing the chance for mosquitoes getting there and breeding.

the water container seems to be very small and almost impossible to check the nutrients solution while the system operates. Perhaps a connection with a low profile "storage container " on the side, will increase the water quantity and allow you to check the nutrients solution too

Hi! You can use one or more of the revision pieces (this one www.aponix.eu/shop/16th-part-with-revision-lid/) so you can reach inside conveniently. There are 3 larger flat areas on the base where you can drill holes to integrate drainage, controller probes or a floating valve to auto refill. To use an aeroponic sprayer you might want to take a look at the Netafim adapter. That way you can use the Netafim Micro nozzle parts.
