You both made an excellent point about learning both stringers AND weaves! Excellent video!

This is some good info but you basically showed us that you are a good welder. Unless you can see the puddle and how the rod movement is actually feeling and speed it’s taking to do it then it leaves a gray area. Some people learn a lot better by seeing it done rather than being told. People need to be able to see it just like you are seeing it from under the helmet view

Good video. My employer is giving us 2 weeks of stick welding training. Yes, 2 weeks and I've never welded in my life. We're taking the bend test at the end of the 2 weeks 😥

What was your amperage? I know you mentioned the amperage for the 3/32’s rod but what about the 1/8th rod, I’m running about 115-118 when I run 1/8th and was curious to where you ran yours
@scottysutherland3568 Жыл бұрын
I run 120-135 amps (1/8" 7018) depending on the machine. It'll also vary depending on the operator (via travel speed, arc length, etc.).

Was trying that in a class recently . Vertical weld of a fillet. I am too unsteady trying to stand in front of it. I was better when I had my left elbow on a nearby post and my left hand holding my right hand with the stick in it.
@yeeyee975910 ай бұрын
You sir are doing it the way I do .I will always position myself steadily to a level of comfort before striking and depositing with stick. Its excellent practice to ghost your direction or mimic what your going to have to do before welding..more times than not guys will get themselves in a pinch and have to tie in where they haven't intended on timing in at or lose their positioning and make a mess quickly. Im a red sealed Journeyman welder by trade with 17 years fabrication and oil related experience

Alot of useful tips. However I don't think you can weave that wide per ASME Sec. 8 pressure vessel and boiler code. This is still great information about technique and weld placement.

ARC LENTH, ROD ANGLE(!), and travel speed my friend. Gotta find the sweet spot. Keep practicing and you WILL find it! You MUST FAIL time and time again in order to achieve greatness. .be somebody. .be different.

Push the rod right into the groove and keep the arc really tight and move it slowly. If you watch the weld pool you'll see it filling the sides as you move up , try to maintain a steady speed so the sides of the weld spreads. Undercut can also be from slightly lifting the rod as you move it, when that happens you'll hear a different sound and the weld pool will get smaller. So the best thing I found is to push the rod in and maintain a slow steady speed letting the weld pool fill the sides as the rod moves up. Hope this helps.
@davethomas87389 ай бұрын
Hold your sides for a 1 Mississippi count. Spend no time in the middle. Your toes will fuse perfectly and the weld will maintain a flat profile

Your final 5 passes have a ton of under cut and the layers arent tied into each other. If that was my D1.1 3G test plate...they would have failed me. I wouldnt even be allowed to put a cover pass on that.
