I never imagined the amount of talent this required. The scene is so intense they're missing their beats, missing lines, Stiller even just straight up used Downey's line. It's method acting and improv comedy, but in a scene where the characters are going through an intense existential crisis. Every take ended up varying wildly with the delivery of their lines. It's like watching them paint a picture in real time trying to figure out how the scene will look. I can't imagine how exhausting this was for RDJ, simulating a complete mental crash-out and trying to be funny about it as well. I watched this movie when I was very young, and it just did not click with me at all (besides this one scene, I thought the triple "dude" line was hilairous). I might give it another watch.

Such a master class on several levels. Remember, this is a comedy. And they're giving it all, like it was an existential thriller or something. Stiller so focused on doing his bit at the same time he's watching to be able to direct, all the while trying his best not to break in front of a very powerful Downey Jr, he's really impressive.
@ColinAverill2 ай бұрын
They have to act like it's any serious movie. If the characters are laughing, it takes the onus off of the audience to do so. If they play it straight, it's funny, but if they busted up laughing in every scene, the audience would get bored of it very quickly. The same goes for crying in many instances. If you can portray the depth of sadness in a scene without needing tears (not saying they don't have their place in films, they certainly do, it depends what the scene calls for), your audience will be bawling.
@aleksisuuronen59692 ай бұрын
Altough they both are trying not to laugh. Robert contorts his face in so many takes into a some version of a smile (but it's a smile) for almost breaking. Masterclass on so many levels. Stiller is not only acting and directing but he is making mental notes of the edit. You can see him calculating all of that in real-time too -- it's pretty crazy to think about because of how many roles he's occupying while making this film. I used to think his character's portrayal at some points was the weakest of the film, but I think in many ways his performance is understated for the purpose of helping make everyone else shine, from Nick Nolte's cameo to Tom Cruise's Les Grossman, to Robert Downey Jr's show-stealing performance.

One of the reasons I’ve always wanted to get into film is the freedom takes allow you. On stage, you have a line, you say a line. That’s the line and it will always be the line. Even more constraining, you find a delivery, you keep that delivery. On film, the final product is locked in forever; no matter how many takes you do, once one is chosen, that’s what the audience sees and knows forever. On stage, you have to recreate that moment in real time over and over so every audience gets to see the same thing and have the same experience. The exploration is in the rehearsal process, not so much in the performance itself. It’s fun, but I’d love to play in a space where you get more in-the-moment options and opportunities.
