Swinging free air simulates follow through and miss recovery. But you should do a combination of training; free air, object striking, and sparring.

don't listen to the trolls - this is exactly what beginners need. Thanks I am quite adept at several martial arts - but for this stick stuff i needed to start slow and basic. This is exactly what i was looking for

@Scott Katz I made the mistake of trying to go too fast, too soon when i started learning that. It is better to get your movement right before trying to go to fast for sure. Speed comes with time and practice. :) Something i am still developing.

I share your thoughts about striking a target but It would also be useful to hear from a kali master the reason why people practices without a target and why it may be better (or not) to have a punching bag or anything to hit.
@iansinclair62566 жыл бұрын
My teacher tells me it's a warm up movement, Not a combat one. So it's purpose is built more around coordination, flow, and gradual speed in doing it. They are all strikes regardless of the variation, but it's just used as a warm up routine. I have noticed we use the same kinds of movements for more than the sticks.
@iansinclair62566 жыл бұрын
I was made to hit the tires to remind me they are still actual hits. And in the air just for constant flow and speed. My teacher also has us using foot work during it too. Even had to practice it standing on 3 bricks in a triangle shape and changing foot work while doing it. he said in the older days, they used half coconut shells instead.

Are the escrima sticks supposed to be substitutes for knives? I ask because the backhand strikes in the video don't seem to be that powerful. However, if you were holding a knife in each hand then I could see some horrendous damage being done.
@DemonPE6 жыл бұрын
they use sticks and swords the knive drills are different, but same heaven and earth applies to them
@iansinclair62565 жыл бұрын
They can be used as sticks for blunt force attacks, or bladed weapons like Bolo. Which is a sword or machete weapon.
@bikersoncall3 жыл бұрын
They had to disguise the 'art' by switching to sticks while being occupied by Spaniards. Today mostly it seems to be about sticks, I guess that way the best artists don't run out of opponents right away.

what is differences between kali /escrima/ kalaki sticks?
@iansinclair62565 жыл бұрын
Each schools sticks may vary in length. from maybe 24' - 31' perhaps. Depending on the system. Not sure if there are any other differences you are talking about.
@iansinclair62565 жыл бұрын
Your form is terrible in this video mate, but you have the general movement idea right. You strike in the air to allow better flow and follow through without interruptions. It's good to do both i think. We practice on tyres with our sticks as well as in the air. Good warm up and coordination practice.

This is for beginners
@iansinclair62565 жыл бұрын
@@PotatoCrusader982 With all due respect, he clearly was still a beginner. If you can't do it slow with good form, you can't do it faster with good form. I learned that from masters. He seems like good man, don't get me wrong, but it is important to keep your form clean/good when teaching students, so they see a good example. Nobody expects a beginner to have good form, but we do with those teacher us.

It's basic all across each FMA style of Escrima, Kali and Arnis in general. Every single one of them use this.
@iansinclair62565 жыл бұрын
In our school we call it Amara. But it's the same movement idea. For us, it's used as a teaching aid and warn up drill. Not as a combat method per say.

Haha, I don't think you could make it any more confusing. Why not just do slow motion full-chambered H6 sinawali and THEN play around and talk a lot:
At that point you wont even be able to hit the opponents body

Rowena. In my training, sinawali is a weaving/waving motion. In our school we call it Amara though. Nothing to do with english tagalog that i know of. If you use Eskrima/Arnis/Kali. we know it's FMA anyway.
@aaronm1343 жыл бұрын
Sinawali means to weave, it comes from the Tagalog word "sawali" which is a woven matt. In other words weaving patterns of the stick/baston. As for Eskrima, Arnis or Kali it depends what dialect you're speaking and where you are they mean the same thing. I know a lot of people who speak Tagalog use the term Arnis. P.S Tagalog one of the dialects is spoken in Luzon.
