ABBA are simply the greatest pop band in music history. The were a global phenomenon during their recording and performing years of 1974-1982 when the band split only to get back together in 2022, 40 years later, to create their new album Voyage and a new live Avatar show still running to rave reviews in London. Their music covers all sorts of different styles and is well worth time in listening to a wide selection of their music. Their vocal range and attention to detail in their production is why they are as popular now as they ever were.

Yes, “Dancing Queen” by the Swedish group ABBA is indeed a Europop and disco song. It was released as the lead single from their fourth studio album, Arrival (1976). The song was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson, and it became a worldwide hit. I grew up with all the fabulous music from the 60's-80's. ABBA was one of my favorites. They had lots of hits & I owned many of their albums. I can't think of a bad song by them. Some of their best are "Mama Mia", "Thank You For The Music", "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", "Money, Money, Money", "Waterloo", "Super Trouper", "I Have A Dream", "Voulez-Vous", "Fernando", "Chiquitita", "Take A Chance On Me", "SOS", "Knowing Me, Knowing You" etc.

We must remember that, after ABBA's victory in Eurovision 1974 with their devastating and iconic song "Waterloo", they had a hard time repeating that success And it was in Australia that the 'ABBA' album videos were a huge success, with three consecutive #1 singles: I do I do I do I do I do, Mamma Mia (10 weeks in the Top!) and S.O.S. European,Australian culture was/is heavily blended with Abba's music,not to mention even South Africa and Latin America in some degree.Abba is still a music phenomenon in the pop musicverse and according to what a journalist recently reported they have a solid 'pan-generational fan base'.Thank you for your reaction.

Yes, they have a rather wide repertoire. Which seeing what they did before they joined to form ABBA kind of explains. Benny was part of one of Swedens leading rock groups Björn was part of one of Swedens leading folk groups. Anni-Frid, had been lead singer for dance bands and jazz bands as well as sung schlager. Agnetha had probably the strongest pre-ABBA career of the four as solo singer in schlager and pop. So there first albums (before their international break-through) they do experiment and do not seem to have decided fully what kind of music they wanted to do. Before they decided to for pop with some variations. Disco didn't exist at the time, it started about the time Dancing Queen was released and it did become one of the first disco-hits.

Im 62, and I’m sure you remember, back then in the 70’s people here in America liked a lot of rock , soul, funk, and country music, and many people basically defined ABBA by the song Dancing Queen, even though they had a lot of other hits. So it wasn’t cool just to say you liked or loved ABBA, if you did you kept it a secret . After the late 90’s when ABBAs music became popular again , nobody hides it now, we all can say that we love ABBA with no fear lol .😄

ABBA were the Swedish version of a 'Supergroup' when they formed. All four members had been successful as solo singers or in previous bands. Each had a slightly different musical background and they weren't really sure which direction the band should take. So their early albums are a mixed bag of Glam Rock, European Folk, MOR and even some Reggae/Calypso tinged numbers. As the two women came to dominate the lead vocals, they really became full on 'Pop/'Europop' but still threw in the occasional 'Rock' song. They only did one 'Disco' orientated album so they shouldn't be defined by that one music genre.

Though true, most will not acknowledge that ABBA was primarily a studio band comprised of anywhere from 9 to 12 members and mainly made up of locally contracted Session players / musicians who happen to get lucky with some Pop Sugar tunes. Never having had any intention of leaving their "backyard" to take their music to the public, they were overwhelmed by the requirements of actually touring. Although practically all of their counterparts had recognized long ago that being out in front of your fans was integral to sustainable long term success, the incredibly daunting logistical challenges coupled with enormous financial expense of taking a band (again, primarily made up of low paid Session players) overseas for extended periods of time to do concerts was pretty much ruled out from the beginning and served to undermine the sustainability of the band as the 70's wound down. By the time the decade was over, virtually no one had actually seen them perform live as only 13 concerts were done in all of North America and in the case of ABBA, the concerts came too late as the genre have moved on leaving them behind. Within the first two years of the 80's, ABBA was through, they disbanded and went their separate ways.

It wasn’t really that they were overwhelmed, it was more thst they didn’t really like to tour. ABBA was basically a supergroup. Benny had been the keyboard player of Sweden’s most popular rock band in the 60’s, the Hep Stars. Björn was the lead singer and guitar player of a skiffle band called the Hootenanny Singers with several songs topping the charts in Sweden and even getting some air play in the Netherlands and Germany. Frida was a jazz singer who started performing with a band at age 14. Several years later she won a televised song competition and then performed on stage with many iof Sweden’s most popular singers. Agnetha was a singer/songwriter who had her first #1 hit in the Swedish charts at age 17. They had all been touring constantly for years by the time the group was formed. Björn and Benny had quit their bands and wanted to pursue a career as song writers, which would allow them to still be in the music business, but working 9 to 5 and lead normal lives instead of the constant touring. By this time Björn and Agnetha had gotten married and Benny and Frida were dating. Their manager still felt they should perform the songs themselves rather than just selling them. Grudgingly the boys recorded some songs and brought in the girls for some background vocals. And so it began. Their manager recognised that the girls sang better than the guys and should get some more space and insisted that in order to get international recognition they should enter the Eurovision Song Contest since their was little interest in Swedish bands. Their first attempt was Ring Ring, which failed to get them to Eurovision as it only came in second in the Swedish competition. Their next attempt was Waterloo, which won both the Swedish leg and then the final in Brighton as well, and the rest is history. The Beatles is the only band to have sold more records. But hey, the whole idea had originally been to just stay at home in Stockholm and write songs. It was their manager who pushed them back on stage and made them international stars, which forced them out on the road again, but they kept it to a bare minimum. Instead recording videos of their songs and sending to TV stations, something that was a completely novel idea in the 70’s, long before MTV came along or youtube existed. They had had enough of touring before ABBA even came to be. But they did go on a couple of tours though, and making sure to film their visit to Australia. That film, as well as the previous music videos, was directed by their friend Lasse Hallström, who later shot to Hollywood fame with films like Gilbert Grape, Chocolat and Cider House Rules. I guess the idea that that way people could watch them at a movie thestre instead of them having to be on the road.

Being fair to ABBA, I'll say they filled the temporary void between the end of the Soft Rock era (think: America, Bread, Simon & Garfunkel and etc) and the more dominant & more commercially sustainable, guitar driven, Power Rock era that took over in the late 70's. Sure, most everyone loves "sugar" but, folks can't really live on it day-to-day and, that's what ABBA was -- Sugar Pop. Given the dramatic fall of both Sugar Pop's economic viability and the massive decline of the popularity of the Disco and Dance Club genre, ABBA was sure to struggle. While most other rising bands of the time were getting tremendous exposure to fans through television each week on various pre-MTV shows (think: Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and SNL) + massive exposure through the meaningful & significant concert tours they did, ABBA fans got virtually nothing as very few people ever actually saw them perform anything live. Not accepting the need to get out in front of fans by touring, not getting TV exposure and well, basically staying in a studio in western Europe, over engineering music that could rarely be performed with quality when played live, coupled with the crippling cost of touring so far from their base, and the complete collapse of the genre they worked in, ABBA was bound to sputter out. As the Power Rock of the '70's bled into the Guitar Rock / MTV era, ABBA went to the sidelines, saw there was no path forward for them, gave up then, disbanded --- sad, but true.

@@effychase62 Well, sounds like a very North American perspective. Most of the shows you mention I have never even heard of. ABBA were huge in Europe, Asia, Australia and pretty big in Latin America. The only market they never really broke into was North America, even if they did have a handful of hits there. The compilation album ABBA Gold that was released in the 90’s went straight to the top in the UK and has stayed in the British top 100 for more than athousand consecutive weeks, which is a unique feat and shows their enduring popularity. Their current avatar show Voyage, playing in London is consistently sold out. And Beatles is the only group to have sold more records than them. I think Americans tend to underestimate the impact they had on the global music scene. I think one of the main reasons they broke up was because both couples had divorced and it is kind of weird to be working with your exes. Also, the two guys wanted to write musicals, and have been fairly successful at that. Chess, Christina, Mamma Mia. Another great way to cash in on your musicality without having to be on the road.

I grew up with GFR in Flint, MI. I used to watch them rehearse in a neighbor's basement before their breakout performance at the Atlanta Pops festival in 1970. They inspired me to become a professional musician. They also had a keyboard player named Craig Frost who played with them originally and left the band prior to Atlanta Pops but rejoined the band on several albums, including "American Band." He later joined Bob Seger and has been with him ever since. I went to school with Craig's younger brother, Scott (RIP) was also a monster keyboard player. He and I gigged together for years. Craig would sit in with us sometimes. So much fun. Sadly, Scott passed away from cancer about 8 years ago. GFR is awesome - especially the original lineups. I also recommend Three Dog Night - another awesome group from that era. Why GFR and Three Dog Night are not in the hall of fame is criminal!

For this tour in Australia they did hire a small orchestra tour with them. And in interviews Bjorn and Benny have stated that their goal was to break even on that tour. But based on videos of their Live at Wembly Arena concerts, I don't think they normally toured with an orchestra. ABBA toured very little compared to other bands. They were swarmed by fans anywhere they went. They couldn't even leave the hotel because of the fans. And touring is difficult and very tiring. And Agnetha and Bjorn did not like being away from her children.

Abba was not considered a "disco band". It was labeled "euro pop" - European popular music. I know during the disco era, a lot of clubs would play Carol Douglas's version because it was considered to be disco.

ABBA were a EuroBand , their music wasn't particularly disco, more Europop. This song "Dancing Queen" was one of their biggest hits (No1 in America as well). This clip you're showing is from their Australian Tour. Probably the most globally well known band ever. Popular everywhere but in terms of sales, most popular in The UK, Sweden & Germany where the fans stayed loyal right to the end. They were huge in Australia but their popularity quickly faded there whilst they were still at the top of the tree. Apparently they are the 2nd most successful group ever after The Beatles. Their "Gold Greatest Hits" CD has been in the UK Top 100 for almonst 20yrs and is still in The Top 30. Nobody did it liike ABBA.

Abba sold around 800 million copies, one of the MOST succsessfull bands. And the songs are BRUTAL to sing. There are some real ugly tries by some "famous" modern female singers, they suck - even with autotune. Because to sing abba-songs, you have to be a full blown singer. And don´t get into a trap - the ABBA-guys were NOT conservative. Only the blonde female singer seemed to be that way (because of her they broke up, ABBA were two couples who married and got divorced. Basically they sang all the time about their behaviour. Listen to "The winner takes it all" - the singer basically tells the crowd how she felt that her exhusband got another chick and she stand on stage seeing them together.
