To one of Florence's most important stories:
I describe how the rivalry between Filippo Brunelleschi (Father of the Renaissance) and Lorenzo Ghiberti turned into a success story for the whole world.
In 1401, these two important people, before their names have been engraved in history, participate in the competition to build the doors of the Baptistery of St. Giovanni (Battistero di San Giovanni).
According to Brunelleschi's memoirs, the two win together; According to Ghiberti's memories, Ghiberti wins.
Ghiberti wins this race because Brunelleschi doesn't like to share the prize.
The Gates of Heaven has been delicately crafted by Ghiberti for 50 years.
Brunelleschi, on the other hand, goes to Rome, the Vatican, because he lost the competition, and explores the history of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. He reaches a tremendous intellectual level.
The reason why Roman temples and columns are white is because Brunelleschi thought they were white.
On November 4, 1966, the waters of the Arno River overflowed and flooded the city.
When Brunelleschi returned to Florence 20 years later, Ghiberti was still busy with the doors.
Florence's name comes from the flower: Flora, the Goddess of Spring, but when she converted to Christianity, this was not welcomed and the same flower was dedicated to the Virgin Mary to soften the transition.
So, the Goddess of Spring, Flora, becomes the Virgin Mary.
Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Cathedral) is the main cathedral of the city. It looks like a flower when viewed from above.
At the very top of the cathedral is the figure of God, at the bottom of the hill there is the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, and next to them are the Saints.
But there is something very interesting above them: the artists of the period.
When the art was above the Virgin Mary and the Saints, it drew the reaction of the public.
Just below the god figure are Michelangelo and Da Vinci.
Because da Vinci and Michelangelo disliked each other, they were placed far from each other.
The dome of the cathedral was made by Brunelleschi.
4 million bricks are used in the construction of this dome.
The construction of the church begins in the 1200s, halfway through the Black Plague.
Then, in the 1300s, an architect named Francesco Talenti is invited to build the church.
Talenti, a very egotistical architect, makes the dome in the shape of an "octagon" (octagon) and leaves it blank.
Actually, he can't finish...
It is a dream to even think of such a thing in the 1300s.
And Talenti leaves before he can finish the dome.
Brunelleschi comes, claims he can do it, but says he won't share the solution with anyone because of his obsessive personality (he's so obsessed that he keeps his notes in Arabic so no one can read them).
The public agrees, but offers one condition: You will do it with your old friend Ghiberti.
Unable to get rid of Ghiberti, Brunelleschi finds the cure by pretending to be sick and does not come to the construction site for weeks.
Because he's sure Ghiberti can't handle it alone!
The rain that has been pouring in for 60 years continues to pour in until Brunelleschi comes again.
After Brunelleschi was convinced, the dome was completed in 16 years, using exactly 4 million bricks.
This period is almost a miracle in terms of the conditions of that time.
Many consider Brunelleschi a genius even greater than Da Vinci.
Michelangelo Square (Piazzale Michelangelo) is another stop you must visit in Florence.
You can watch the whole city from Michelangelo Square.
You can visit a replica of the Statue of David, made in 1865, because the square is named after Michelangelo.
Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Rossini, Machiavelli, Galileo and many more...
Florence is not a city that can fit into a few videos, so far I have tried to tell at least the most important stories by listening to 4-5 different guides and doing a lot of research.
Forgive us if we're wrong, until we meet again: take care!
