Stanley, I was lucky enough to go up in an An2 for a pesticide flight in Hungary, even got a little stick time as the pilot is a relative.. surprisingly light on the controls as long as your speed is in check, thing felt solid as a bridge, an performed it's task effortlessly.. even with fully loaded hoppers, no change in handling, pilot simply trimmed it out a bit, but the weight was mostly in the wing box, years of safe carefree operation.. maintenance is a cinch as long as you stay on top, but a very simple rugged well designed bird..

The glory of "Antonov" remained in the past - in the USSR. During 30 years of independence of Ukraine "Antonov" has built one single transport aircraft An-178, which exists in a single copy. By the way, the propellers of the An-70 aircraft, which you liked so much, were made in Russia.

I can’t really describe this plane’s sound: it doesn’t sound like a turboprop, but it also doesn’t sound like a jet either, but perhaps something in between.
@LEJapproach6 жыл бұрын
That's because the engines here can be considered as something in between a _Turboprop_ and a _Turbofan_ . The concept is called a _Propfan_ and it's basically a Turboprop engine with a special kind of propeller(s), which is characterised by a higher number of propeller blades with a shorter length than found on usual Turboprops. It can also be considered to be a Turbofan without its outer housing, which is why it's sometimes called _Unducted Fan Engine_ . In the case of the An-70 all that is added to by the fact that the engines have a pair of contra-rotating propellers each. And so it's no wonder this plane sounds unlike any other I'm aware of. :)

Looks like the Soviets are STILL captivated by the 'Turbo-Prop' platform.
@LEJapproach5 жыл бұрын
How so? a) The Soviet Union hasn't existed for decades, so whom do you mean by "The Soviets"? b) The An-70's engines are usually considered Propfans ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propfan ) rather than Turboprops ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turboprop ). c) One of the most widely used planes in the field is the C-130 "Hercules". It is American, has turboprop engines and is still in production. Furthermore, the latest offer in this sector, the Airbus A400M, is European and is powered by turboprop engines as well. d) The An-70 itself isn't developed any further, but a variant of it, the An-188, is. And guess what's the main difference between the two: The An-188 will be equipped with jet engines. Besides, Antonov produce jet-powered aircraft like the An-178 (see kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH7Ghpqop81lmJI for instance ) and have for a long time (e.g. the impressive An-225 "Mriya": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXmZoH6onax6qrM )

It was main competitor of A-400 program, and has much better characteristics. Main reason are its much more efficient engines. Antonov also has lots of experience in cargo planes, and A-400 was Airbus' first cargo one.
@LEJapproach9 жыл бұрын
+Sasha Naronin Well, it's not _quite_ as simple, but basically you're right. The main reason for deciding against the An-70 was potential dependency from Ukrainian supplies and I'm far from happy to say that, but the current situation makes this assessment seem correct.
@SashaNaronin9 жыл бұрын
Yup, the main problem was pro-RUssian government in Ukraine. Guess if the competition would've happed again now An-70 could've haa much higher chances to win. I've seen it flying a few times, it is as quiet as C-17, unlike all other cargo planes I've seen.
@victorv76548 жыл бұрын
You are wrong completely. A-400 is a copypaste of An-70. An-70 development was mostly supported by Russia, especially due to Russian Airborne (ВДВ) commander in chief lobby. All applied science research for this program is Russian (TSAGI, VIAM, etc.). Ukraine once in the past (Yuschenko administration) tried to refused from Russian participation and establish it with Airbus, but Airbus obtained complete set of documentation for AN-70 and fraudulently refused from participation. Now the history repeats. But today Russia completely closed the program in favour of IL-76-MD90. So An-70 is dead.
@LEJapproach8 жыл бұрын
Victor V "A-400 is a copypaste of An-70." - Oh, so that's why the most distinct features of the An-70 (like Turbofan engines and counter-rotating propellers) are _not to be found_ at that A400M?! Realistically, a look at the position of the horizontal stabilisers on both planes alone is enough to see that they are profoundly different.

A-400 is not a copypaste obviously. It's a direct competitor that has substantially worse characteristics but better avionics and is made by a larger company.

LEJ.approach/dvldi Did Airbus copied An 70 for A400 program?I heard that they also copied IL-96 for A340 aircraft.I wish Ukraine and Russia work together to revive Antonov and Ilyushin.
@LEJapproach7 жыл бұрын
I had a discussion about that kind of claims earlier and I say it's complete nonsense. The A400M is different from the An-70 in so many respects, that it simply could not have made any sense to copy the Antonov design. An aircraft is a very complex system in which every single part needs to be carefully designed to make them all work as one and from that perspective it seems quite clear to me, that copying the An-70 and then changing parts like the engines or the tail would have meant a lot of effort for redesigning all the parts to fit each other again with a potentially less than optimal result, so why not design it all from scratch? Same with the A340. It was designed to use as many of the same parts as possible with its 2-engined counterpart, the A330. And again, copying the Il-96 and then trying to achieve this goal would probably have been more of a problem, then designing the A340 and the A330 from scratch with the idea of the shared parts in mind from day one. The same applies to Tupolev's Tu-144, which is often accused of being a copy of the Concorde by the way. As a fan of Soviet-era airplane designs I feel the same about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. If the two went on working together, they would have a real chance of becoming a major player in certain markets. From what I see, Ilyushin is in a better situation than Antonov, but both of them will have a hard time competing against companies like Airbus or Boeing.

@@huntbk6286 - Oh, and why would that be? Just because you're American and you wish it to be so, right? The C-130 is a 1950s design and that's something updates like the J version can't change. The An-70 on the other hand first flew in 1994 and Antonov too have proven that they do know what they're doing. Mind you, I'm not saying the C-130 is bad, but every now and then there are new developments in aviation engineering that cannot simply be incorporated into old designs and so a plane from the 1990s is naturally more advanced than one from the 1950s, even if the latter has been updated. If you would like to see what Antonov built at the time the C-130 came out, look up An-12. Not a bad one too! Apart from that, there's no such thing as a generally "better" plane. The An-70 will probably beat the C-130 in most aspects, but _as_ the Hercules is such an old design, that means it's cheap, it's proven and lots of spare parts are available, so which one you consider "better" depends on what you expect. And by the way: The Hercules _could_ land on a carrier, but it needed enough wind, no other planes could be on deck while it did and it couldn't use the catapult for take-off. Oh, and if it's about things the other plane can't do: The An-70 flies a good bit faster and higher, has a longer range, needs a shorter distance for take-off and easily carries double the payload of a Hercules. But oooh it hasn't landed on a carrier yet 🤦
@huntbk62865 жыл бұрын
It's still better. Doesn't really matter what you say. I wholeheartedly believe that it is a perfect design. They literally are Swiss army knives of the sky. The antonov is a cool bird, but it isn't a herc. It can't do what a herc can, not for me at least. I've flown on quite a few different birds, and the herc is my favorite by far. It got me to and from Afghanistan in one piece. I think it's way more visually appealing. I absolutely believe that it is far more rugged and capable than the antonov, and furthermore, there isn't versions of the antonov that are capable of pinpoint accurate close air support/area deniability. The antonov also can't refuel other aircraft.... While flying...... And by aircraft I mean both rotary wing and fixed wing (provided that they have the probe and drogue style of refueling system) Also why are you so hell bent on proving me wrong?

Let's hope they build more.l'd love to see one of these rarities❤! Top job😎👍!

Thanks a lot! It's really good to read some praise again after having so many comments from know-it-alls, telling me what an idiot I was for not showing the take-off (which I was simply unable to capture because it happened behind a hangar). In 2015 Antonov announced the An-188 as a jet powered version of the An-70 and in 2017 the An-77, again driven by jet-engines, but this time saying it'll have CFM-56s for the Western market and D-30KPs for China, which sounds pretty specific to me. Unfortunately I haven't heard a lot from both since, but I also hope for a revival of the An-70!

@@LEJapproach My pleasure mate!Don't listen to keyboard idiots.They know very little! As for the An-70,l think if they developed more with the current turboprops,it would be definitely an equal to the A400M. A jet version would certainly be interesting.I think Western engines may get the vote though. Who knows! Anyway,one of these should visit the UK.You never know,the RAF could order some. 👍

Comparing the An-70 to the C-17 is the aviation version of comparing apples to oranges. 😉 The two are different in so many characteristics that the comparison simply doesn't make sense, even more so when saying one was better than the other. And cherry-picking certain parameters doesn't help. For instance, the An-70 is cheaper, needs less fuel and it is about 50 tons(!) lighter than the C-17, meaning it stresses runways and taxiways less, which is important when using makeshift airfields. Did I just prove the Antonov was better than the Boeing? Of course not! And the same is true the other way around.
@LEJapproach4 жыл бұрын
@MercyReaper Yes, the An-70 and the A400M are much more comparable, but even in this case there are aspects under which one beats the other, so again there's not general better or worse. Yes, German government considered buying a version of the An-70 instead of investing in the A400M program, but they decided against this option for political reasons and I hate to say it, but from today's perspective it looks like they were right.

Vielen Dank!

So Halle is near Leipzig? Good to know. Halle , the home town of the Count. Felix von Luckner
@LEJapproach4 жыл бұрын
I have to admit, I had to look him up, but yes Mr von Luckner helped saving Halle from being bombed at the end of World War II, by convincing the man in charge of surrendering in violation of an explicit order from Hitler himself. btw: Pay attention when referring to Halle, because there are (at least) two cities of that name in Germany! The one we're talking about here, is the best known one, so usually it's referred to when nothing is added to the name, but if you want to be on the safe side, call it "Halle an der Saale" or in writing "Halle (Saale)". Both mean _Halle at the river Saale_ and make unmistakably clear which city you're referring to.

Because your videos are so much better, right? Next time, you come here and remove the hangar behind which the An-70 lifted off so much earlier than all the other aircraft! You could have skipped forward and the video is more than 12 minutes long, so if you wanted to see it fly, the first 8 minutes would not have been for you anyway, lift-off recorded or not! And by the way: At least 454 people out of the 52,604 views this video has got by now, didn't seem to have such trouble with it, *and* this is the single most watched video on my channel by far. Now, is there anything wrong with the video or is there anything wrong with _you_?
