Wallasey Model Boat Club in New Brighton.

A day on the New brighton model boating lake home of Wallasey Model boat club. Today there was a new model being launched, Mersey Ferry "Royal Daffodil II" 1,300 hours were spent on it and today was its debut. There are also many other models on the water.

It's such a shame that a lot of the young people of today aren't interested! As they could learn lot's by building a model boat! And getting it to sail!!

My modeling did not consist of kit's you bought to make, my efforts of modelling was scratch built from found wood from skips! And nothing was ever to scail, it was what was in my minds eye! If you get my meaning? My first ever one lasted 20 minutes before it sank!!! Ha harr; but I learned plenty from it! I never lost another.

Lovely models. The closet I got to ship modelling was tying beaches together to make a raft for my Action Man and sailing it I. The local park. Proper Cockleshell hero adventure though. A nice relaxing video, thanks 👍🏼

Great to see gatherings like this are still held. Reminds me of watching all types of powered and sailed boats on Walton Park shallow lake. Some had Battleships that fired at each other. Just puffs of smoke to give the illusion of a battle. I was glued. I hope this stays in these childrens memories the way it has in mine.

Great to see the rebuilt pond being so well used by some obviously well built models. I’m an exiled scouser, but in the 70s used travel over to sail a little Veron Titan tug on the old lake here. In ’79 I was able to squash 27MHz radio into it and a home built ESC. I wasn’t a member of the Wallasey club, but did used to chat and share their pegboard to avoid frequency clashes. They were great days, but my inspiration in 1970 was a guy who used to sail a very large model of a Sealink ferry and several other large liners using single channel and escapements. He was old then, but I wonder if any of you guys recall him? I think many of the modellers back then were engineers, toolmakers and so on from the local shipyards, and their work was very impressive - diving submarines, working fire monitors on Mersey tugs, and of course many of the classic Graupner kits. As a10 year old I was absolutely hooked. For me it’s been a lifelong interest, though I doubt I’ll ever be as good as they were, and I often wonder what happened to all the models? I hope they went to people who appreciated them. Newsham Park was also a good place to see models in action and still is I believe, but Walton Hall Park lake which I notice someone’s mentioned, looked very run down the last time I was there, a great shame, as it was close to where we lived.
