Vespa & Lambretta Race at the Nürburgring July 2020 DE

Le Mans, Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone or Monza, these are names that give motorsport fans goose bumps. But if you had to choose a mecca for racing drivers from the many traditional circuits in the world, it would probably be the Nürburgring. Under a small castle ruin in the middle of the idyllic Eifel region beats the heart of the motorsport world, at least from a German point of view. Not only does it have one of the most legendary race tracks in the world, the Nordschleife, but also the GP circuit. A course of the most modern character with a wide track, optimum surface and wide run-off zones. Just the perfect conditions for driver and machine.
Unfortunately, on such an ideal race track you are only allowed to ride a scooter all too rarely. Such courses are too expensive and too tight with dates of different race series. All the better, if the opportunity arises to ride your scooter there. Despite the many cancellations of events this year there was such an opportunity on July 3rd. A separate class for scooters was allowed to go on the track for three training sessions and one race of 20 minutes each. Unfortunately, the race was only a uniformity classification, where the riders had to try to drive consistent lap times. For this the participation license was free.
About 30 participants came from all over Germany and Austria. There were many different vehicles and drivers with different levels and demands. From the 52er Vespa to the 70ccm automatic scooter in racing trim. Drivers, who were on a race track for the first time, up to the champion from the ESC racing series.
What stood out were the high-end engines, which were disproportionately represented. Lambrettas with Targa Twin, Casa Performance SSR 265 or CNC/Simonini engines. Vespa Smallframes with Quattrini M200 engines and of course the SIP-BFA 306 engine I came with. For such engines there is no nicer playground and hardly a harder test to put them through their paces. The long full throttle passages mercilessly expose every weakness.
The fastest driver on this Friday was Robert Leibfahrt on a Vespa Smallframe, equipped with a Falc cylinder. He managed to set a new record for scooters: 2:44 minutes for one lap, congratulations!
Driving on the Nürburgring was again an experience no scooter driver will forget. Even if this year the supporting programme was a bit short. The organizers had to adhere to a strict hygiene concept to cope with the Corona crisis. So there was little room for sitting together or celebrating together. But when you sit on your scooter, close your visor and the flag falls, no one is interested in Corona. Then there is only the next turn, the moment, the experience and the goose bumps you still feel after years when you think of the Nürburgring.

In my country (Italy) there's some funny journalists text this on a famous magazine..."Notingh transcendental, mind you: the powers of the respective engines do not exceed 15 horsepower, but seeing two mopeds generally used for city travel making curves at a speed of 150 km/h always leaves you amazed."...please find me an engine that makes 15 hp and 150 km/h...Maybe an Honda rc116?
