J-Thank you for finding some time to visit us, because yesterday you were in Munchen, before that in Vienna and soon after you are starting a new project. Do you know when, where, what you are singing? VK- Well, I know until the end of season, but sometimes I don’t really know about next year. That is why I have somebody who knows it all. J- So you go to the Met and then you sing Octavian from Rosenkavalier. VK- I don’t know exactly where I'll be Mar 2013 but he does, he has it all written down

J- Until when are you booked? VK- Well it differs, for instance I know where I am singing next year. Concerts are being planned later, operas earlier. Previously I was booked for about 4 to 5 yrs ahead. Nowadays the theaters are being sometimes cautious. But I am singing since 1980, always very intensively. You have a similar job, you know how it is. J- I am amazed by what you do much more, every opera is a piece of art that needs the orchestra, conductor, decors. How does it all work together?

This is kind of late and you prob know it by now but the opera shown at the start is Alcina performed at the Vienna state opera in 2011

J- But it wasn’t easy at all finding a piano in Bulgaria at that time. VK- Yes, but my father managed it. He brought one from Dresden. J- He was a driver and he brought you a piano from Dresden? VK- Exactly, I am so thankful. That piano made a long trip. From Bulgaria to Zurich, Zurich to Vienna, from Vienna back to Bulgaria and then again to Zurich. And now it is there, in Zurich. So I praise my belongings a lot. J- So you were playing the piano, but how did the voice come? (translation by AP)

J- I would like to go back in time. You are brought up in Bulgaria, communistic Bulgaria, cut out from the rest of the world. How did the music find you when you were a small girl? VK- It came automatically. I waned to play the piano and my parents understood that. Now that I am a mother I understand how important it is to listen what the children want to do and not what we want them to do. (translation by AP)

VK- "I accompanied the piano many singers and I was wondering why did they whine all the time. Either the humidity was high, they didn’t sleep well last night, the room was lacking acoustic, they had headaches or they should drink some water at the very same moment and then I tried singing and said to myself - You know what Vesselina, you have also a voice, why don’t you give it a try? - that Is how I began and today I am an opera singer. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but that is the truth."

PLEASE... what opera is shown at the very beginning ???????

VK- For me opera is not all about the voice, as you said there are a lot of components needed. Intelligence, high percentage of instinct, we should also react fast and often improvise onstage. These are things that are being acquired while on the stage. With the experience you are getting more stable, of course some singers are getting less stable with the years.. You are always criticizing yourself, but I think that with a great vocal technique you can practice this profession for a long time.
