I remember watching a movie as a kid about the families who made a hot air balloon to escape. And I remember watching on TV as they tore down the wall.

the first time I remember hearing about the Berlin Wall coming down was when my parents dragged me and my siblings out of bed to watch on the TV I and my siblings didn't quite understand at the time how important that event was until much later

Cisco is my second favorite Captain... my favorite is Captain Archer from Enterprise. But I do like Deep Space 9 better than most of the other series.

One thing he didn't mention were the "Selbstschussanlagen" which basically amounted to guns with a tripwire that would go off if someone triggered them, either by climbing a fence or crossing a certain part of the border.

Moment like this in our history is why i believe that as a world as nations we can work together and be better. Strive for excellence but at the very least show ur decent. In the present day it's difficult as even opposing politicians will rather shut the nation down and burn it fir they own self gain then actually govern but the potential for that greatness is still there.

You make an interesting point about the Federation and how DS9 calls all that into question. I do not really disagree, but also do not fully agree...so let me offer a suggestion for something maybe we can both fully agree with. The Federation only works when the most crucial technologies are functioning...planetary fusion reactors, replicators, weather modification, and warp drive. Does that sound correct? Are there technologies that I left out? I thought about transporters being on the list?

I was on a high school trip to Germany the year the wall was decommissioned. And we were in Berlin for two days. At that time the wall was actively being taken down by a construction equipment. And students were there. I asked the guards if I could pick up a piece of concrete and rebar and smash the wall and take bigger chunks, he said yes. I did, the rest of the students saw me doing it and they all started doing it as well! I still have those pieces of the Berlin wall. So in essence, in my mind at least lol. I helped take down the Berlin wall.

One should mention, what actually lead to the decision of the GDR to allow people some kind of travel to the west in 1989: In general it was not impossible to travel in the GDR, you could and many did it, it was just limited to other eastern (warsaw pact) countries. So you could make holiday in poland, hungary, czech, ... or even russland. The people of the GDR started to abuse that in 1989 by travelling to those countries and then visiting the embassy of (West) Germany and asking for asylum. Esp. famous was Hungary in August, as hundreds of people were on the area of the embassy and the were then allowed to travel via Austria to West Germany. (Of course there were many other events leading to that decision, but that was in my eyes on of big ones).

Mr. AmericansLearn, I discoverd this channel and I LIKE it! Although, before I dare react to any of your videos I need answers to a few questions: 1. Is your name Kit? Or Kid? ... USMC names or nicknames are sometimes hard to understand for non-Native speakers? 2. I understand you are an U.S. Marine .... and I learned that addressing Marines wrongly might be an issue (especially between enlisted, NCO and officers). How should I address you? ... Chief? ;)

Yes the west German capital was Bonn while east Germany was east berlin (coincidentally the largest city till reunification in east Germany.) West German cities have grown and still is the biggest cities and powerhouses of the country. U can easily tell the difference even today.

After WWII, Americans weren't just fair, as far as an occupying army can go. They were better. Even the POWs were treated much better by their captors than they had ever been, period. That's what my Grandfather told me about his time in a POW camp in the US. When he was captured in North Africa, guards broke out their own rations for the prisoners, that were at the point of starvation, at the time. For him, this goodwill they created never went away.

I’d argue the Korean Peninsula is a better, more obvious example of East v West. Just look at a night map and guess who’s doing better. At least for Gen Z, that’s a much more obvious example.

Im also a trek fan but ds9 was my least favorite. Tng my favorite. Hate the newer stuff. I do think its a valid point about the federation however. But i think the morsl or lesson is how any governmental body, no matter even with best intentions, can be corrupted. including organized religion as they get more and more politicized. If people are involved, corruption seems inevitably to happen. Why i wish history was given more attention from everyone. If you want to know the future, look at the past. Because humans never learn from our own history, but just put on repeat. Over and over and over again.
