The soldiers on both sides were replaced because they would kill each other. Each side either didn't shoot or just shot up into the air. The trenches were so close that they actually tell jokes to each other. The rule you don't shoot and we will not shoot. They apparently had the right idea about war lets just talk instead.

As always, Sabaton reaches into your soul and squeezes the emotion out. The crew that created the video normally work on movies, and the resulting quality and depth that they achieve is amazing. Joakim has said that this song is written as a waltz, and that the opening uses a reversed version of the Carol of the Bells. The movie crew was able to get the band to do an admirable job of acting, with most of the band expressing how difficult acting turned out to be. The cross in the video symbolizes actual crosses and memorials to the truce, specifically the Ypres cross that was erected in 1999 to commemorate the truce in that region. Par carves 2021 to reflect the 1999 in that cross. Great reaction, anyone who is not moved by this video is dead inside.

The fact that this actually happened gives me hope for the human race, the common soldiers put aside their differences and came together in peace and brotherhood for a few days of real human fellowship. It's a shame that politicians and people hungry for power and money decide to "Let loose the dogs of War" instead of finding peaceful solutions. One day human compassion may well win out and war will be a thing they never carry out again, but I won't hold my breath.

There was not a blanket truce some section of the lines kept on fighting. After the truces some sections of the lines refused to fire on each other and were moved to other places in the line. Some people refused to fight at all and were court martialled. The authorities made sure that no Christmas truces were allowed after this 1914/15 one. The singing at the end was by Floor Janson of Nightwish wife of Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl (the one who got blown up by the grenade). She recently released a single called Invincible about PTSD, this after a recent brush with cancer and a previous breakdown. A beautiful song with a beautiful message well worth a listen.

I like the implication on the song that the individual soldiers on opposing sides have more in common than the higher-ups and politicians who wanted the war. And the somberness of how on the first pre-chorus it's "we are all friends" and then later "we were all friends". And "thinking about those who never made it home once the battle had commenced", again implying you remember them from both sides. The commanders had to move some units into different fronts after the Truce as they were not willing to shoot their newly discovered friends.

I have the deepest respect for your way of reacting and the way you encourage your viewers to visit the creators to show appreciation. I have no family that has served since I live in Sweden and us being neutral. I do, however, have a friend who served in the peacekeeping force (UN) in Kosovo, he still has nightmares from what he witnessed there. My son has resently finished his fieldnurse ed for the Army Ranger Battalion. Given how the situation now is in Europe, and us joining NATO, I must say that him enlisting makes me both proud and fearful.

This was the song that turned me into a Sabaton fan. It usually makes me cry twice, once as Hannes is crossing no man's land and then again when Pär is carving 2021 on the cross. This was not long after the 100th anniversary of the armistice, when I learned that my country had sent soldiers abroad to fight _Every_ _Single_ _Year_ since the "War to End All Wars". A war that never ends, indeed! Most of the stories about my relatives' experiences of war come from WW2. The most incredible concerning WW1 I will save until you react to Sabaton's version of _1916,_ because it is directly relevant to that one. Peace.

There is a French movie called "Joyeux Noël" with this quote : " The country? What does the country know about our suffering? I'll tell you one thing : I felt closer to those Germans than to all those who shout "Death to the Krauts" warm and cosy in front of their chestnut turkey!"

The thought that always go through my head when listening to this song and thinking of the historical events behind it is: In wars such as this, the enemy is often demonized to such a degree that you're not fighting other people; you're fighting some faceless abstract "evil". During the truce the enemy is humanized again, and once the fighting commences, they were suddenly fighting brothers, sons and fathers who didn't wish to be there any more than you did. Commanded to be there by politicians hundreds of miles away.

In fact the troops that took part in this truce where immidiately relocated. Because many where unable to figth against people they had met. The Pope at that time had asked the commanding staff of al involved parties for a Christmas Truce. Command did not want to do that. So at many places the soldiers made this truce on their own accord.

It has been more than a century since the Great War started and they are still digging up bones, grenades and death. If you ever visit us you must go see the museum in Ypres. Every day since 1918 at 8 clock they play 'The Last Post' on the square for the soldiers who lost their lives. Every single day. 'Lest we forget'

With the recent Death of my grandfather may 4th 2022 (Dutch National Day of remembrence of the Dead) me and my family found some documentation of my grandmothers side of the family that he kept. I turns out that her father, nephews, male cousins, uncles all served in the first world war... none of them ever came back... all called up to serve in the Austro-Hungarian army. My grandmothers' grandfather was the only man not called to serve as he was considered too old. He did not survive the war either, after the last letter he got from the military informing him his last son had made a 'glorious sacrifice for the fatherland, to be remembered by all' he took his own life... 2 entire generations of men wiped out by the great war. my grandmother was only 2 years old when war broke out and her father was called to serve, she never spoke of how the consequences of the great war affected her, but she kept all the documentation, and after her death, my grandfather kept and preserved those documents too. That is what I know about my relatives in the great war

The soldiers don't choose to fight, they where send by their commanders. Hannes (the soldier who jumped the grenate) is walking to the other side who just tried to killed him, and later on when a ball is flying to the air it reminds him of the grenate. And I see him thinking "what the hell are we doing here?" Like System of a Down said in the lyrics of B.Y.O.B. "Why don't presidents fight the war, why do they always send the poor"

I had a few relatives from both sides of my family that were in WWI. I've been putting together a listing for all the men and women from the county I grew up in. One interesting story I came across was one of the soldiers went and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion when the conflict started. And joined the American forces when the US joined in. There were so many of the soldiers who came back changed and later ended themselves. It was truly humbling experience to see all the names. And there was one of our local women that was a nurse at Camp Bowie in Texas. Thanks to all the vets for your service.

When I was four, I had a playdate at a friend's house and while we were playing outside, a WWI veteran was waiting for a bus. He wore an eyepatch and we wanted to know what happened. Shrapnel from one of the very same grenades you see in the video had taken one of his eyes. He showed us his empty eye socket and we never forgot it.

I had ancesters fighting in both World wars. We still have pictures of WWI and WWII because a man my father refered to as 'uncle' took many photographes. There are even some from when they went through poland... terrible pictures... dead soldiers, pilotes and horses... I wish there was a way to find these peoples loved ones to send them these pictures. I know it sounds cruel, but it might give these people closure. I know how horrible it is not to know... my uncle and grandfather both came home years after the war was over because they were held as prisinors of war in conditions i'm still surprised they made it home alive. About 13 years ago I gave up my well paid fulltime job to be the 24/7 caretaker for my grandmother. At her funeral we recieved a handwritten field-mail with a little painting of her laid husband. He was writing around christmas time and wrote 'For now i'm okay, hope you are as well.' He already lost many of his brothers at that time in Stalingrad, other places on the battlefiled (his brother ried and he came across that landmark a few days or weeks later by pure accident😢) and to starvation for being a prisinor of War. As bad and as horrifying that it was i wish my grandmother would have had the chance to read one of the last letters of her beloved husband before she passed...😢

The Last Post takes place daily, promptly at 8 p.m., regardless of weather conditions The Last Post takes place under the Menin Gate, a 4-minute walk from the Grote Markt of Ypres. You cannot reserve a place. Get to the Menin Gate on time so that you have a good view of the ceremony. Attending the Last Post is also free. The buglers of the Last Post Association are responsible for sounding the Last Post. These buglers are volunteers from the Ypres Fire Department. Out of respect for the deceased, there is never applause after the Last Post. The silence under the Menin Gate gives every visitor an overwhelming emotion. The cross that you see in the video has also been there since 1999. This video is about the one day of peace on the battlefield of Flanders near Ypres.

The Christmas Truce is one of the most amazing events in the recorded history of modern warfare, and the event was the only one like it. Future Christmas Truces were banned and the death penalty thrown in to make it stick. My grandfather fought in France in WWI, my father fought in Europe in WWII. I’m an Air Force brat and a History minor. Sabaton always nails historical accuracy. The very fact that they specialize, as a metal band, in historical events is wonderful and amazing and I love their music. The Christmas Truce is one of my favorite events in history. This song is one of my songs ever.

Hello together ! I watched this video many times. Every time tears in my eyes. So many People fought for their countries, their families und at least for their lives. Brave men in foreign countries. But so much bravier than these soldiers where these people - raising their hands without any wepon - hoping the other side has as brave men as themselfes. Meeting them on the battlefield, not with guns, but with an open heart and this is humanity, as it should be more times than this single day. this was 1914, but decades earlier and till today, its the same - we need such brave men.Thandks all of them for their service, and thanks sabaton, they bring back a peace of history, that we need today also. The nearly insane look in your eyes as enemies shock hands and exchanged gifts... and then the sadness as it stopped. As once more they picked up their guns. I am not going to explain the history here. You can find that. I watched this the moment I saw you made this because I don't have to explain to you how special that day was.
