As a vet tech I’d like to say I wouldn’t call this a vet visit gone wrong! They were able to do a full exam and shots without sedation and they handled him really well. For some difficult cats, that’s not possible. I will say though, he would benefit from some premeds!
@lexxymoo513 жыл бұрын
I was surprised that everyone thinks this is a gone wrong when at the vet clinic we get this all the time. I guess us vet assistants really are a different breed
@maddieconnell32503 жыл бұрын
Nah the kindest thing for this cat would to be stop handling and sedate. He is terrified. Sedation is not a bad word. Just because you CAN handle him without sedation, doesn't mean you SHOULD.
@emilygordon12733 жыл бұрын
It’s defiantly not a good exam it’s actually very bad all they’re doing is terrifying him further. I’m a vet tech myself and this is not ok
@lexxymoo513 жыл бұрын
@@maddieconnell3250 So what you're saying is, they would have to go exactly through that to even be able to sedate the cat, and then it would be more costly and time consuming for the pet parents? Just because you can sedate doesn't mean you always should. That's how I know you're not a vet tech. A cat is temperamental whether or not you choose to sedate, the cat will be stressed while you're trying to inject it. Maybe the pet parents should use something to calm the cat before going to the vet.
@maddieconnell32503 жыл бұрын
@@lexxymoo51 and that's how I know you aren't a vet tech. There are more forms of sedation than injections. In fact, that is exactly what you call certain forms of oral medication that pet parents use to calm the cat before going to the vet, not to mention it is cheap ;)

@rocketraccoon19767 жыл бұрын
Maybe for cats this frightened, they could somehow sanitize the room of scents from other animals? Also, maybe the day before, the vet could give the owner the towels and gloves for him to rub/embed his scent onto, then the vet & vet tech could use the towels & gloves the next day in the checkup? Also, what about some catnip after the exam, so the cat can associate something good with going to the vet?

To those wondering why the owners don't intervene/help out: lots of vets prefer the owners stay back if the pet was highly stressed/aggressive because 1) vets are professionals who know how to handle any animal, and 2) vets would rather the pet direct its aggression towards them than towards their owners. My dad had a parrot that adored him for years (he got it as a hatchling, long before he even married my mom) until one day he brought it to a vet to get its wings clipped (parrot used to free roam in our backyard) and as my dad was holding the parrot the vet accidentally clipped some skin, drawing blood. From then on the parrot HATED my dad because it associated him with pain and trauma. Broke my dad's heart because he loved that bird but it would always shy away from him. Parrot still loved my mum, my sister and I, so it lived on happily with us. My dad just had to give it a wide birth and toss it treats from a distance.

never heard such a bs. vets at least on this side of the great ocean do the opposite. but talking about health care is nontheless a point of big divergence, regardless of for humans, or animals as it seems :D just replace the pet by a small child, ripped away from their parents. no one would say its OK to traumatize a child in this way, if the alternative is just to have their parents being near or holding a hand... animals are no different to small children, frightened, helpless, forced in an unknown environment with unfamiliar people who wanna do seemingly threatening stuff, and both (depending on age) lacking the capacity to comprehend or process/come to terms with whats going on .... so treating them differently is just again the human hybris to think animals as lesser instead of treating them the same way.

@matthewbibby89215 жыл бұрын
@@jinxed402 I have a feeling you don't understand a dam thing about cats or working in a veterinary clinic. First of all, the cat was likely in there getting vaccinations or something, possibly worming or flea treatments as well, which is essential to make sure they're healthy, so he HAD to be in there. Second of all if a cat is pissed off in a clinic you're NEVER going to get it to calm down. Seriously, you can't talk down a cat, you can't just stroke them gently, once they're pissed off, they're pissed off. Thirdly this means that if you do have this case, the best option is to restrain it regardless of whether the cat likes it or not in order to get the whole ordeal with over as quickly as possible, what do you expect them to do? Break down into tears because it pissed itself? Seriously? Remaining calm is absolutely the best way to stay in control and proceed. Fourthly they have to take care of themselves, a single bite or scratch could lead to infection and complications for health, especially if say for example he has come in for treatment because he has some sort of disease, it's essential that vets are firm regardless of what the animal feels about it for their own safety as well. He's dam right that the veterinary nurses did a good job, the cat was clearly extremely stressed out and could well have been dangerous if handled incorrectly, but they remained calm, did the best they could to restrain and get the painful parts over with, and dealt with all its hissy fits in a well organised fashion. So, in respond to your ignorant rudeness, as you said. Fuck. Off.

I agree. This cat is being abused.
@Mayo-hd4wi Жыл бұрын
Medical neglect is 100% more abusive than restraints to get a check up. Many pets don’t get regular vet visits. And they should. They’re important for vaccines and check ups to hopefully help your pet live a comfortable life. There are necessary times when animals need to be stressed for their own well being. Same with children. Same with adults. Some discomfort to prevent a lot of discomfort is the way to go. Imagine if this cat had some kind heart problem. But they couldn’t take him to a vet because he was too agressive? What if that lead to him having a heart attack? Or suffering because we couldn’t let him be stressed for a bit. I’m assuming you’re young, because I don’t really think your brain is all there yet (not until 25!). Or at least I’m hoping your young. Because it scares me to think people are ignorant about these things. And believe me I’m ignorant about a lot too (don’t know what you don’t know!) I hope my comment hasn’t been too rude. I’m just very passionate about medical science, extending towards animals as well

This poor cat is terrified out of his mind. He’s not angry or aggressive, he’s in full on survival mode. Only way to deal with cats like this is to keep vet visits short and sweet - get in there, do what you need to do as quickly and as calmly as you can and then get him back home again ASAP. By doing so you might be able to reduce stress levels associated with the vets over time whereas this experience will just have reinforced for him that it’s a horrible place.

I firmly restrain my cat while the vet gets on with what he needs to do quickly, calmly and quietly. I specifically go to that particular vets practice because they’re so good with my cats. Hats off to the technician who handled this cat so well! As a veterinary technician myself, I deal with fractious cats often (and I’ve seen worse than this!) Nope. As a vet technician myself, and a cat owner, even if I live in the country that has no laws that protect the animals, I would be the main candidate for sedation in my country. The cat is suffering from excruciating pain and trauma that nobody takes seriously and nobody takes into consideration. Everybody is laughing with zero empathy about the things that should be taken care of in the matter of seconds. Yesterday. I mean immediately. Oh and their bravery? It's just a tiny kitty, try to deal with a rabid rott. Or at least a rabid rat pet, a fox, a raccoon... Our vets have been bitten so many times that we don't even remember by whom. Bless their poor souls. The entitlement is unbelievable.

Cats will scream, hiss, bite, scratch, urinate and defecate on themselves because they are scared, stressed, and do not understand that the staff is there to help them and make sure they are healthy. Visits like these would go much faster and much easier for the animal if sedation has been an option. Those vets aren’t “psychopaths.” They are looking out for the well-being of the animal and the safety of their staff.

@@morganbooth3419I have been working as the field doctor for more than twenty five years. Sedation as the means of helping somebodys pet and keeping the animal calm and relaxed sometimes could be the proper way, but I'm not sure that those deleted comments before ours ment the same thing while mentioning the "sedation".

My big orange cat does this. He is super nice at home but as soon you take him to the vet he is a phyco douchebag. The vet actually has him marked in his file as aggressive and dangerous because he has kicked so many vet techs asses XD

My cat hides from the carrier right when she sees it cause she knows she's going to the vet but once we're there and done she can't get back in it fast enough

@Louvenoire057 жыл бұрын
Nickvilla21 You should take your carrier out like 3 days before a visit and just leave it out. The cat will immediately hide. And in 3 days before the appointment you can just grab her and put her in. It's the advice we would give to clients, for every appointment. You can also use feliway products inside the carrier a few hrs before the appt for a different experience. Give it a try! :D

@Myaucat perhaps the nurse shouldn't have put her hands in front of the cat the way she did, but she wasn't necessarily trying to antagonize it. She was trying to be friendly with him and playful but he's aggressive from fear. The vet did not touch the urine directly either and honestly, sterile urine is the least of our problems in the vet industry.

@Myaucat I honestly don't see any of my vets wear gloves during a consult and I've been at 3 clinics so far
@demidragon81116 жыл бұрын
Myaucat it’s rly not needed to wear gloves, clearly you don’t understand vets. it’s easier to do exams and stuff without gloves, so they can hold the tools properly. and the nurse was trying to play with the cat, not irritating it. Vets only wear gloves when they’re doing surgeries, They wash their hands very very often.

@Myaucat you're an idiot, when a cat is in such a state you don't try to fucking play with it! You get to the business, swiftly, decisively, calmly and fucking quietly! The loud raucous laughter and high pitched voices scream they fear him, it is not soothing or comforting.

animalwhisperer what is wrong with this cat I never seen a cat act like that before
@animalwhisperer35427 жыл бұрын
Caution Caution it is scared. The vet has lots of scary smells of dogs and other cats Plus the vets and vet nurses are plastered with different smells. Cats are smart, they smell lots of sickness and medicine. It probably also associates the vets with pain of some sort.

When a cats paws are sweating it’s usually an indication that they are under intense stress. In this case, this cats aggression is directly related to the level of fear he is experiencing. If his stress heightens much more, it can lead to self-soothing fear induced behaviors such as elimination or as he is already doing, physically attacking. Cats can die of a heart attack due to stress and it’s really not good for their kidneys or heart to be this stressed out. Consider asking a veterinarian for recommendations for calming the cat before his next visit. I’d hate to see him or any animal afraid for their life due to a routine veterinary visit.
