Verdun was a massacre. Both on the french and the german side. There were 300 days and 300 nights of combat without a break, 300,000 dead and missing, 400,000 French and German wounded. The pastoral landscape surrounding the city had been permanently transformed, and nine villages-Beaumont, Bezonvaux, Cumières, Douaumont, Fleury, Haumont, Louvemont, Ornes, and Vaux-were entirely destroyed. Douaumont Ossuary, a monument completed in 1932 that contains the remains of 150,000 unidentified French and German soldiers. n the 21st century the French Interior Ministry estimated that over 10 million shells remained in the soil around Verdun, and bomb-clearing units continued to remove some 40 tons of unexploded munitions from the area annually.

It was a year of massacres, the Somme (310,000 dead and missing, 800,000 wounded and captured) and the Brusilov Offensive (800,000 dead, wounded and missing, 500,000 captured) also happened in 1916. (Random aside, one of my great-grandmothers had the maiden name Beaumont, probably a different Beaumont to that village though).

Actually it's about Audie Murphy, "to hell and back" being the name of his autobiography as well as a movie about his war experience starring Audie Murphy as himself. Audie did in fact end up with PTSD as well as a severe morphine addiction which he kicked cold turkey by locking himself in hotel room. The final verse, and part of the chorus are taken from a poem he wrote called "crosses on Anzio."

The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle in human history, at 302 days. The death toll is estimated anywhere from 700,000 to 1,000,000. A deployment to Verdun was less than two weeks for some countries (France I believe had this policy)

I'm glad you like this song. I'm just throwing some info about Verdun, as others have done in the comments. Like the message at the end of the song explained, Verdun became the symbol of the war for France during the battle itself and up to today. This battle is really the embodiment of what that war was, for both side. Not unlike what Stalingrad or Peleliu would be in WW2 for Germany/USSR and the US/Japan. Just a few numbers highlight what Verdun was: 700,000 casualties on a 65 km long battle line. 2,3 millions soldiers took part in this battle during the ten months it lasted. 65 million shells and 6 villages that were simply blown off the face of the earth. Verdun was mud, bugs and rats, blood and death. To my great uncle Sgt. Julien Roy, killed during the second battle of Verdun, aged 21.
@TheBandSShow5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Alister. Crazy. Hats off to your great uncle. I heard that the deaths in WWI were so extreme that the British didn't even tell the citizens the true numbers for like 20 years?
@OakhheartIX5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBandSShow That's actually a good question which historians still work on. I'm no expert so do not quote me but I made a project on the topic of WW1 numbers in my 2nd year at university. Numbers are and were very hard to get. Before considering how governments shared these statistics with their citizens we need to understand how these stats were made. First there is the nuance many militaries have between K.I.A. and casualties. Numbers will never be exact since many historical sources barely made the difference in wartime since all they were interested in was how many bodies they could dress in a uniform and send to fight. Then there is the question of what makes a soldier K.I.A. Prisoners ? Missing soldiers ? Disease ? France and the UK for instance moved aside these stats so as to not increase the numbers of deaths. Example: there is an estimated 100,000 French soldiers who developped what wasn't yet known as PTSD. Half of them died during the following 3 or 4 decades in asylums or for lack of care. They are not official casualties of the war. The US on the other hand included most of their soldiers who died of the Spanish flu in their deaths ratio while other belligerent did not always do so. It's not about who was right or wrong but about how sources can change a lot. As such, real tolls were often estimates even for the governments. An other example: 700,000 casualties are considered a good number for Verdun. But among them, "only" (sad to say) 300,000 or so died. And it is possible for the same soldier, French or German, to be listed twice as a casualty if he was wounded twice seriously enough to be unfit for duty for a period of time. The wiki page "World War One casualties" does a good job at explaining how numbers are evaluated, how they can change due to different sources and also the technical difficulties of counting deaths (e,g. the lack of bodies, the often poorly kept records of colonial units, the changes of borders, especially in central/eastern Europe, ...Etc.). To be closer to your question, I'm not sure there was a real will to hide the truth after the war. We also have to remember that archives were not publicly released for decades after the war, in every country. The estimates would have been known by the general public but not the exact numbers. Because of the avalaibility of the archives the estimates vary. The last big change in these numbers I am aware of was made in 2014 when a Russian historian had access to new Russian sources and was able to offer new insights on the death toll of the war because he used new documents. I hope it's interesting and not too poorly written. My written English isn't always spot on. Check the wiki page, it's quite well done.

My father had PTSD from Korea and my Grandfather also had it from WW2 in the Pacific. He also ended up committing suicide. It’s the hidden cost of service that as vets we are well aware of. Many of us have paid a big price for those who didn’t serve can burn a flag under which so many of us served. I find it ironic that people in Hong Kong are flying the Stars and Stripes because to the it represents freedom under a very real threat of that freedom being taken away and over here in the states so many are willing to give it away over the promise of free stuff. Thanks again, Stan for your service to our country.

A little background to verdun , also known as the meat grinder. The single purpose was to draw in so many french troops at verdun and kill as many soldiers as posible and to weaken the front and redeploy the british troops in belgium to verdun and weaken the nortern front for massive german asault and break through to lines. As the french generals saw an opertunity to drain german forces from the main force in the north and weaken the german offensive in the north both plans back fired and hundreds of thousends of soldiers got killed and wounded with out any gains . and was one of the reasons of the french soldiers going on strike and mutiny against their commanding officers. hundreds where executed and in the end better rotations and food was suplied to these frontline soldiers. Battles like these almost broke alied morale and with the russians out of the war france and britain where ready to give up as money ran out debt increased to record hights . Imagine beeing a soldier between 1914and 1918 fighting in horrific conditions where 10.000 soldiers a day and sometimes 100.000 to 250.000 soldiers on both sides got blown up , gassed machine gunned every day. the ones that died where the luck ones as most wounded had their faces shaterd limbs amputated blinded by gass and not to mention the once shell shocked after weeks and months of beeing bombed by artilery . The veterans of this war where also the officers soldiers politicians in the 2nd world war . they all went through the meatgrinder called ww1 and life ment verry little to them. Every one blamed the lusitania and german proposol to mexico to invade the USA to trigger the american involvement in to the war , truth was if germany would win the united states would never see a dollar repaid for its loans .

Sad part, as amazing as this song is, is’r probably one of the weaker entries for the album (and catalogue in general). 82 all the way and Attack of the Dead Men are just the killers off The Great War. But as far as amazing entries into Sabaton in general, Bismarck, The Last Stand, 40:1, Smoking Snakes, Heart of Iron, Union (Slopes of St Benedict), Screaming Eagles...Gods o could probably list a good third of their tracks. For anyone that want a mini-documentary about any of their tracks, Sabaton History on KZbin.

For your homage to veterans, you may want to include the Sabaton song To Hell and Back about Audie Murphy, the most decorated US soldier in WW2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJnQeYZ3eNF6Z8U

Bloodiest and longest battle of WWI, and all for a few kilometers of land which was taken back in the end... Imagine 700000 casualties, 300000 of which died... And for what? The Germans took 3 or so of the French forts but lost all of that when they (French) finally counterattacked... Check out the history video they (Sabaton) did about this song, very interesting!
