Looks like great low tech solution. What do they do with the effluent when they empty the barrels? Just bury it somewhere?

I am not sure, but probably added to the compost heap.

Do they use "EVAPTRANSPIRATION BASIN" or "BIO SEPTIC TANK" in Kenya? These could work over there and you can grow bananas or papaya. It's popular in Brasil apparently
