Yeah really wish a different designed flag would have been chosen. I still prefer it over the current 1983/1957 redesign though for Minnesota. Sidenote: most middle Eastern countries share pan-arabic colors of black, white, green and sometimes red added/swapped. They lack significant amounts of blue. At least the national flags do, I don't know about subnational flags much. I mean technically people are arguing it looks like Somalia's flag, but that's East African. Though I guess it depends on your opinion of regional definitions. Apologies for being cynical. 😅 I hope you have a good day.

Some fun facts #1 Ilhan Omar isnt from Puntland, i see this coming up and up again from those claiming “its a somalian flag” #2 There are only 64,000 somalis in minnesota, accounting for 1% of the population #3 The flag was designed to represent the landscape of minnesota originally but it was simplified. Her clan is from Puntland. Even if we put all of that aside, you still have to address the fact that this was 100% politically motivated. Every person who supported changing the flag in the first place is a Democrat. It's the same thing as them changing the name of Lake Calhoun, or renaming streets, schools, libraries, and so on, because they were named after old white men, which is bad apparently. The majority of the people in this state do not what the flag changed. This is the work of moral busybodies that make up a minority of the population. It's the new version of the pearl clutchers of the late 1900s who tried to cancel The Simpsons and KISS for being too extreme/sexualized, except THIS time it's an attack on the history and culture of the majority of the population, and the descendants of the people who built Minnesota.

@davidpawson9047 As far as being too hard to draw or too expensive to produce, that should not be a factor in deciding to change something that's been virtually the same for 130 years. How much more expensive could it possibly be? Why does everyone need to be able to draw it? If it's ugly, why can't it's simply be redrawn to look better? Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Delaware all have flags that are hard to draw, but that doesn't make them bad flags. Even if you try to draw California's flag, it will probably look terrible unless you have some experience. If the state flag is going to change it should be a bi-partisan effort, and not something done by one vocal minority of one political party.

This doesn't say "Minnesota" at all. It's OVERLY SIMPLISTIC to the point of meaninglessness. two shades of blue leaves it lacking contrast, and makes it feel too "cold". It's more of base starting point of a flag. This is insane. Abstract flags are not state flags. I have just seen designs for newer state flags that mean essentially nothing even symbolically because they are so disjointed. This is not to say that there are flags in the world that couldn't use a reinvention, But when reinvention becomes the rule, nothing ties anything back to heritage at all in that case. Take the united states for example. Each state flag, for the most part, should be its state seal on a basic color background. Not some abstract sculpture no one can properly decode. Whatever the state seal is that should be the flag. I think the reformation of our flags through conflicting new rules has gone far too far and has become more of a critics' arena, then reflecting a given state's actual heritage. I don't care if a kid in school can draw the flag based on simplicity. It's not their problem until they are taxpayers paying for said school. Harsh judgment call, sure, but this much has to be said. Its not my opinion: its my state. And the state is the traditional seal. I don't mind occasional adjustments, but a total reinvention of the entire concept is not necessary. Look up the rules of heraldry. Most of these new flags of our union will not age well.

@horticultureandhomes that's easily the worst part. Flags aren't nametags. They should be distinct to the point where you don't need it literally spelled out for you. Look at Ohio, Texas, and Alaska. They don't have their names on their respective flags. Yet, even I, as someone not from the US, can easily recognize them. Also, you're forgetting the fact that the words on the old flag can only be read if there's wind. If not, it looks like the others.

Awful-awful-awful. Who designed this and who decided this should be the MN flag? It violates the rules of heraldry/vexology. Using two "colors on colors" without a separation with a "metal" (gold or silver/yellow or white). Worse, it has two hues of the SAME COLOR ?! Lets hope their General Assembly, somehow, suppresses this! If the right portion were gold that would work. OR if the right portion were green with a gold strip (or white strip) dividing them, that would also work. No respect for the traditional and mostly globally accepted rules!

if you want to get this uppity about the rules then you're doing it wrong. the prescriptions against "colours ON colours" & "metals ON metals" are from heraldry. even then they wouldn't apply to 2 adjacent fields, just things on top of other things. by your interpretation the rule is already violated by the flag of the USA, considering the blue field next to the red stripes. but also by the flags of portugal, the holy see, czechia, slovakia, slovenia, serbia, russia, cambodia, cameroon, azerbaijan, zimbabwe, papua new guinea, mongolia, palestine, jordan, yemen, taiwan, madagascar, libya, djibouti, kuwait, angola, benin, eritrea, guinea-bissau, south sudan, zambia, germany, or a bunch of others i think you get the point: there's nothing "globally accepted" about it also they're very distinct shades of blue, in some languages they're completely different colours. no visual problems they could cause even if you take colour blindness into account.

The new Minnesota flag has an 8-pointed star in a Minnesota shaped field, with light blue in the rest of the flag - the Bonnie Blue had a 5-pointed star in the middle of a uniform dark blue flag. The Bonnie Blue was a beautiful flag in its own right but has too much ballast from Confederate history to be a good American flag today.

Both are different from the blue of the Somali flag, and both form together a pattern that the Somali flag doesn't have at all. . . . The submitted and chosen tricolor (white, green, blue) looked nothing like Somalia's Puntland flag. But when the commissioners looked at many variation, one of them looked like Puntland (blue, white, green), but it wasn't chosen. And the final design had no tricolor. . . . It seems to me the intermediate Somali-like variation excited right-wing media so much, they couldn't stop talking about it, and they still can't stop, when the selection process has already moved on. Do you have a better explanation?
