This is a tutorial on how to fly join the VFR Traffic pattern at a non-towered airport using UK CAA recommended procedures and comparing with USA FAA recommended procedures using the G1000 Nxi on the Cessna 172 G1000 in Microsoft Flight Simulator (FS2020).
The airport and runway used in this tutorial is the Runway 32 into Okeechobee County Airport (KOBE)

Your turn in the diagram for the teardrop was backwards. Your turn was the right way but your diagram was backwards

Your airplane was facing the wrong direction in your diagram for the teardrop entry

The diagrams are not quite the same because they are out of the FAA text book but the fundamentals are correct and the turns are in the right directions, there's something else... Keep looking!

Was the mistake that on the teardrop approach you started turning back towards the airport before you had descended to the pattern altitude?

Interesting, I've never interpreted that the tear drop turn should be done in level flight at TPA. I don't actually know anyone who does it like that either... There's something else, but maybe there's two!

Thank you - excellent stuff, really well put together. The teardrop entry would confuse the hell out of me. (Not hard, admittedly). So I have to say I prefer the UK (and European?) join. I've a bad habit in the sim of making en route detours so as to arrive on a long final in order to avoid the situational confusion in the circuit/pattern. This has encouraged me to try a more realistic join. I'll need to watch again to spot the mistake: your natural authority means I just believe anything you say.

Yes, the overhead join is pretty common around Europe. The different methods are a big point of debate! If you do rewatch to find the error, its more something I've done wrong rather than said wrong ;)

The teardrop is pretty easy overall and logically makes a lot of sense (overflies the pattern and allows you to enter with the flow of traffic on a 45 degree entry), but most people tend not to actually do it in favor of the "alternate" crossing entry. Personally, after having seen the european entry, it makes a lot more sense for going NORDO and/or not having an AWOS. That being said, what you said you do in the sim actually isn't unrealistic. While the FAA prefers you to perform a normal standard entry, it by no means is illegal to enter straight-in. In fact, that's a requirement for most instrument approaches. In congested pilot controlled airspace, a lot of people prefer to do exactly what you said you do in the sim because they can control exactly how to sequence themselves in.
