It's always been about appreciation, and even when things don't look that good they try to understand why it looks wrong and why the studio couldn't do better at the time instead of just reacting to it.

They don’t use lighting to their advantage anymore and the overly high-quality ruins the textured feel of older films, which also makes it harder to comprehend when it’s way too clear.

The most fascinating part is, at that time I thought it looked like some kinda octopus makeup was put up on someone. Had that dried makeup type look in some scenes. I never once thought this was completely cg. The lighting and the animation is everything here.

Ah, it's easy. You just rotoscope the face, apply some layers. Add some physics, subsurface scattering and voila. CGI has really come a long way. Could do this under 15 minutes on a calculator.

@@DaFrancc Good match up of facial animation, mocap, and proper specular highlights add a ton. Humans move far differently and more rigidly than the exaggerated yet buttery smooth cartoony ones. I always see mistakes with overdoing lip animations. The newest Luke Skywalker had that issue in two spots in Boba Fett. Same with Leia in Rogue One.

Davy Jones is so incredible that when I didn't know much about FX, I literally thought that they made some advanced puppet and makeup costume hybrid in order to get it all to work. Even now, when I've learned so much about digital effects, whenever I watch that movie I still think he's completely real because even though I know how he was made, it's so perfect that he just registers as a real creature. I'll get back to that "man, can you believe that he's all CG" thought like ten minutes after the movie is over. Crazy shit.

Getting insight into not just what makes up those sounds, but also the process of how and why the creators made it that way would be cool. A lot of epic sounds are created using really unexpected things.

You guys should really do a whole episode around Pirates of the Caribbean. There’s so many amazing VFX sequences in the franchise. The skeletons in Curse of the Black Pear, the whirlpool battle, and my personal favorite the Kraken. A lot of possibilities.

I think with Davey Jones they wanted Bill Nighy's real eyes as a backup in case their CG ones weren't good enough, but in the end they were, and obviously it was way easier to just do them as CG rather than roto the real eyes into the scenes.

Specifically terminator 3, salvation, genesis (my least favorite) and dark fate, as those have both amazing digital effects and practical effects throughout the movies

Yeah, pretty much only thing holding it back is the mentioned lack of motion blur. But the animation and the blend of live action and animation is so spot on it's hard to believe it was done by manually moving puppets frame by frame.

Stop motion seems to be rather a dying art in this day of extremely complex CGI, alas, but I really do think when done well it has an amazing ability to hold up over time in a way that digital effects don't always do...? I reckon movies like Coraline will still be classics even when the current crop of MCU extravaganzas may perhaps become considered "outdated CGI" by future viewers... As the guys note here, maybe part of it has to do with the way that you get a certain degree of natural lighting & texture for free, without having to be at the mercy of current software's limitations in those spaces?

She does fall a bit in the uncanny valley, but the animation is crazy good! After I saw it the first time I got convinced that we would se fully CG humans in movies in a not to far distant future.

Davy Jones is one of my favourite antagonists, maybe my most fav. And beyond his written character and outstanding performance, the CG and everything gives it SO much life. The writers, Bill, and VFX team are firing on all cylinders and it's wonderful. Seeing that computer assisted animation can go into making something unachievable otherwise on the desired scale and emotion is really neat to see in a world of modern BTS adding in a false location that exists in reality. It's projects like PotC that stand out in that regard to me, using CG when and element cannot be done otherwise. Thanks for the long breakdown on Jones!

He's one animator. These characters are created by many people, starting by concept artists who draw a bunch of ideas for the director to choose. Some artist drew several Gollums and Peter Jackson chose one. Then many diferent artists modeled and animated the character. Same thing for the shots.

@@ancientflames I think that's mostly down to how modern production works. Comparatively to some of the tent pole trilogies in the early 2000s like Lord of the Rings which had almost a decade of planning and top artists, most big movies (especially by Disney) are made quite quickly like with Marvel. Marvel for example, has multiple teams developing multiple movies/shows at once, with most teams and houses being the same people working on all of them. So they spend like 4 months filming 10 months before releasing it and that doesn't give time for a lot of wiggle room, especially for last minute changes to CGI heavy scenes or sequences. While some of them look great like Infinity War and a good portion of Phase 3, you get stuff like Black Widow which has terrible compositing in the final act and that's just due to most of these shots being reshoots or pickups done very late having little time to get done. They've already talked about Black Panther but it was a very similar scenario with that, the final act and fight between the villain was filmed last and had to be done in 2/3 months before release. While I enjoy the movies, I don't like the over reliance on CG mainly because not a lot of the time is put into CG especially when they've got 10 other projects down the pipeline that have to be started the next day. Films from Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves and Edgar Wright are fantastic in all departments, especially visual effects, because they give time for the teams to work out kinks and adapt with ample time given. Sorry for the little rambling, I've thought about this a lot lmao.

God, rewatching Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind just blew my mind with the number of dreamy sequences it has. The seamless edits, lighting changes and cleverly done VFX shots are masterful. How they show eroding memories or warp locations and timelines is so visceral and drama-driven. Please shed some light here - Your Day 1 fan.

I'd love for you to take a look at Dave Cameron's Avatar again. Specifically, when I watched the movie, the Colonel guy that Stephen Lang plays looked so ...rendered? ...CG?, even more so than the tall blue people, despite being one of the few human characters. I wonder if you guys, with your knowledge, could tell me why a real human being looked more CG than the actual CG characters.

Thank you all so much for such an incredible episode! I love all VFX artists react episodes, but Robyn, Wren, and Niko are an unstoppable combination! My two favorite VFX artists react episodes have been this one and the one where Robyn talks about his work on Dune. Way to go ya'll! I can't wait to see more episodes (hopefully some with Robyn) and more awesome landmark films that Robyn worked on (thinking about Dune 2 ;) )!

@@ziggygunz2447 I have heard that as well, and I know some people were initially confused over if it was some next level CGI or just really stylized aesthetics. I was into 3D technology, games and behind the scenes cinema tech at the time so I knew what it was long before ever seeing a trailer and as such can't really give an opinion on how convincing it was to an average viewer at the time. I just know I was highly anticipating it at the time and ended up impressed at the tech, if not the story.

I also love how the animators gave a little bit of extra twitch or jolt to the acting of the tentacles, whenever Davy Jones has a sharp emotion or lash out moment. Just adds to the realism

Great episode!! Love Davy Jones effects, the wet look of the skin makes it so tangible too. Suggestion for future episode: Just finished the season finale of The Guilded Age on HBO and one of the extras was all about the production. How do you film a show set in 1880s New York when New York looks nothing like that these days? They said about 30-40 percent is built on set and the rest is filled in with CGI - it looks very convincing! You guys were also talking about effects in main title sequences, this show has a beautiful CGI title sequence. The marble flowers opening alone is worth mentioning! Love you guys!

Finally! Well done Robin for highlighting the godfather of sfx, the great Ray Harryhausen! It's the one thing I felt had been missing, not appreciating and acknowledging his work. I'm of an age where they were my Star Wars, and the skeleton battle and Talos etc, with that Bernard Herman score from Jason and the Argonauts still thrill to this day.

There's a small thing in the Jason and the Argonauts skeleton fight that I always loved... at one point a skeleton gets his skull lopped off and there's a moment where it just stops fighting and kind of wanders off to find his skull... it just pauses and the torso moves like it's looking around and then just wanders out of frame... always loved that part, that tiny detail that added just a modicum of humor to what was meant to be a dire situation.

Suggestion: You guys should react to the short film REBOOTED on youtube by timtimfed. It's all about a stop-motion skeleton trying to find work in a film industry dominated by cgi. They use a really cool mix of stop-motion and cgi to pull it off
