In this video I want to cover some common cases where you might encounter particle stepping. People often jump to increasing the substeps of the simulation and that's really just putting a band-aid on the problem, instead of addressing the root of the problem.
In the first examples I go over some ways that you can fix stepping by randomizing the interpolation between steps using the ID value of the points.
If all else fails there is the brute force approach that is or own custom interpolation that's happening outside of the simulation.

Just a quick note: Not increasing substeps is only really relevant for pop simulations. Obviously if you want to do grains or flip you will need to increase substeps eventually

What an amazing tutorial - it's counter intuitive that Houdini does not fix this with substeps so thanks for sharing!

Much appreciate for the great tricks! I've been using Houdini for over four years and am still struggling to fix simulations with high substeps. This helps so much. Thank you!

Man come on, how can the one be professional like you hahaha, In Cinema 4D you was legend and now in Houdini i see the same thing, You are really talented, Good luck bro and keep going

Dont mix talent with hard work and countless hours of study the topics. As soon as you say talent, people have impression guy was somehow born with the knowledge...

@@voxyde I am 100% sure he did. That was not the point of my comment though. You might be talented, but tell the people how many hours you spent with Houdini so far. They might realize its not up to talent, but hours you put into it.

I am still having stepping issues. But I feel like it may not be due to the source as shown here. I have a simple curve with some animated noise. when I use POP curve force to make particle go along curve, is when I start getting serious stepping problems. Changing the min / max substeps on the solver does help with this, but I have to turn it up to like 10 to be usable and it takes way too long to sim. Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't like to use the POP curve force node, cause it's hard to control usually. I would recommend recreating it with a geometry vop/wrangle. You can use a pcopen or xyzdist to lookup point attributes on the curve and use those to drive the velocity. Once you're inside a VOP or wrangle you can then use a random value based on ID to offset the velocity of each particle. It's a little bit of a complicated setup but maybe this video can help : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZqnnpWlgtuciZo&ab_channel=TimvanHelsdingen Otherwise you can try using the brute force method (last one shown in the video) to fix the stepping after the simulation
