I’ll add in a caveat into the hobby discussion at the end, I tend to personally view radios more as tools from a preparedness standpoint but I occasionally enjoy the hobby aspect of it also, I think this radio is going to be the perfect compromise for a open frequency radio for preppers who don’t want to take the dive into DMR, and even then that can be supplemented, I’ve seen a fair few people buy those TCA/TRI PRC-152 clones for their functional KDU’s (Keypad Display Unit) which allow radio control while the radio is stowed on kit like webbing or a chest rig or even on a bag or rear of a plate carrier, apart from that party trick the internals are basically Bobby basic baofeng bits. I think the VR-N76 is going to offer real value for the prepared minded folk, I’m especially looking forward being able to do remote control using the app via a dedicated PDA (basically just a rugged android phone) to essentially act as a KDU which will be a major quality of life upgrade since 90% of the time I use my radio it’s on my webbing belt

@ I’m coming from a very niche look on things but it’s a new perspective, my missus has actually told me she’s picking me up one of these for Christmas so I’m looking forward to getting it, depending on how well things go I’ll most likely will be putting forward the reccomendation to have this is as our teams main radio platform for standard/public type communications going forward since it has the internal messaging and the gps features (we previously augmented this via radtel rt490’s which if set up correctly can transmit your GPS signal and the others then reply back automatically) which allowed for semi easy positioning when we’re out up north and such

For those of you wondering: you can connect to the app (smartphone) and a bt speaker at the same time.

Nice

Yes, there's a small plug in spot on the back of the VR main body that an external speaker can be plugged into also. A bit overkill with the speaker mic, phone and handheld, but nice to have options :)

Firmware Update says: Push top right green key? Am I missing something? Or did China changed left to right 😄 But it is for sure a great radio, thinking about getting one. Nice video thanks. And 120.- Pound is cheaper than here in Germany, they are asking 150.- up to 200.- €.

To unlock the frequencies in the radio. In the app tap on battery voltage several times. Underneath firmware. And it will ask if you are sure you want to put it in test mode and click yes.

Thx for review. Can you do SSTV?
@HamTechRadioScannerDrones2 ай бұрын
You would need external software.
@arthurbrown132 ай бұрын
@HamTechRadioScannerDrones OK, one of the versions (Radioddity, VGC, or BTech) had the SSTV software built-in to the app. I don't remember which one, none of the manufacturers show it on their specs. I think Hamradiocrashcourse demonstrated it. I'll have to look at his video again.

The volume control seems very coarse. Only 10 or so steps?
@3Swillems2 ай бұрын
I dislike it as well. The minimum level is too loud for me. A continuous volume regulation is better
