Verbalästhet's German Grammar Lecture 2) In this video Im talking about the different types of German verbs and their differences.

*** 5:04 Weak verbs can be as old as strong verbs, but every new verb in German will be weak (unless it's a combination of an existing strong verb and a prefix for example)
The strong verb stem changes for the present tense follow this rule: a changes to ä and e changes to i or ie (=long or short i).

I didnt hear much good of Duolingo but I havent tried it myself. For German it is important to understand the construct and then it becomes reliable. If you start without the structure (which can work for some languages) you will run into problems later on. Let me recommend the extended Strong Verb tutorial too.
