I actually remember watching this. Our cable provider at the time carried Turner's Cable Music Channel on the channel right after MTV (MTV was channel 18, Cable Music Channel/VH-1 was 19). VH-1 took over for that channel on 1/1/85. I remember it being more Urban/R&B in the beginning months, then slowly turning more Adult Contemporary as time went on. I also remember when Level 42's 'Something About You' came out that summer, it seemed like they played it every half hour on the dot. Just like I Ran (So Far Away) did for MTV, Something About You seemed to epitomize early VH-1 to me.

At 3:16, VH-1 people news in 1985 showed Helen Slater signed on for two Supergirl sequels but didn’t make it into the screen due to Supergirl being crashed and burned at the U.S. box-Office and she gone to Texas filming the teen crime drama Fair is Fair which later became The Legend Of Billie Jean.

@Eduardo Mendez Tri-Star ruined Supergirl by cutting down to 105 minutes. What a disaster!

It’s interesting that the very first music video played by Olivia Newton-John was for a track that was never released on the pop chart, let alone the adult contemporary chart! I found it odd that the music video channel would make references to her being with a man who was 10 years younger! Anyway, I’m have Olivia got some love and airplay fir her music videos on this channel for awhile, unlike MTV, which outside of “Physical,” barely played her!

How were they playing digital sound of any type in 1985? D1 (the first common digital videotape format) did not exist until 1986. Was the whole "digital Dolby stereo" thing just a fraud, or what?
@kevinhamburger6732Ай бұрын
What are you referring to?
@Alpha8713Ай бұрын
@@kevinhamburger6732 The video specifically states that VH1 has digital Dolby stereo sound. They had to play back their programming from something, and no digital videotape formats were in common use in 1985. So, were they doing something unusual or clever, or were they just lying about their technology?
@kevinhamburger6732Ай бұрын
@@Alpha8713 For VH-1 music videos, like MTV, played back from Ampex ACR-25 cart machines. We modified them with split track heads so that stereo could be recorded. We also employed Dolby A noise reduction to help with the audio quality. Dolby A is an analog process. I believe (but don't remember but will confirm with another colleague) that on the satellite the audio was a Dolby Digital stream, which is why the mention of it in the clip.
@Alpha8713Ай бұрын
@@kevinhamburger6732 Interesting. That makes perfect sense, although calling it "digital Dolby stereo" is a bit of a stertch if the only digital part was the satellite uplink. Did they ever switch to Dolby SR later? Or did they move on to different playback devices by the time SR became popular?
@kevinhamburger6732Ай бұрын
@@Alpha8713 I left 3 years after the VH-1 launch. To the best of my recollection, we stayed with Dolby A NR. No idea what they did for playback, etc. years later. I could be wrong about the satellite thing. I'll try to talk to someone else who might remember.

Jon Bauman AKA Bowzer had just come off the short-lived Match Game Hollywood Squares hour. He was, well, more qualified to host VH1 than a game show :). Atlantic City area cable got VH1 starting on June 24, 1985. SHaking You by ONJ was from the Two of a Kind soundtrack. There is an audio track from Kenny Rogers' This WOman at the 6:20 mark, and from Neil DIamond Heartlight at the 6:30 mark. IN between those two are clips from a Julio Iglesias video and Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, followed by a clip of Linda Ronstadt's I Knew You When.
