I've been using the older 851 model since 2011. I really beat the radio up on patrol with the CG Auxiliary as well as my own boat it still works after 12 years of abuse on the original battery. I just ordered a new one, and there was little doubt about what brand I was buying.

The Pleasure Channel. Yes, I utilize that channel (on Dish Network) all the time, and it's my favorite channel. Every Saturday night.

I have been using for over a year. Screen easily scratches, need a screen protector. Charging dock issues. Generally not a bad transciever.
@FishingWithHeath2 жыл бұрын
No dock issues for me as of yet. Hopefully not anytime soon!

You should have it tethered to your pfd. If you go in the water without whats the point if you can't press the emergency button.
@FishingWithHeath3 ай бұрын
I would say if I'm inshore - 50/50 on if it's tethered. If I'm offshore, it's always tethered to me.

Is there a fee for the distress gps?
@FishingWithHeath3 жыл бұрын
Yes
@maxwellmark3 жыл бұрын
@@FishingWithHeath There is a one time fee of $25 to register your number with the USCG. If you have a Boat US membership, there is no fee. You may be responsible for fees related to a rescue or boat tow but DSC is an automatic feature of the radio and there is no further charge.

You really arent supposed to use VHF for chit chatting. Its a life saving device and is regulated. For example you arent allowed to use it on land unless communicating with a boat. Channel 16 is the monitoring channel. If you need Coast Guards thats where you call for it. I recommend everyone get aquainted with each channel's designation. There are very few channels for just talking. You cant just pick a random one and go there. Even if noone seems to be on it, the frequency could be interfering with governmnet/military. There are whole blocks that are for military use only. Also, keep in mind, because its not for chit chatting, there is no encryption. Everyone can hear everything you are saying if they are on the same channel.
@FishingWithHeath3 жыл бұрын
We were on the pleasure channel. There are multiple pleasure channels available.
@alexanderefron73422 жыл бұрын
There are no "military" marine vhf channels aside from 22a coast guard. Yes you should be on a pleasure channel to chit chat, in most areas you can get away with using some of the commercial channels too just be aware of what is used for what in your area for example 05a, 10, 12, 14 are all common vessel traffic service channels and should be avoided near large ports. 13/16 are for calling ships, 67 calling mississippi river, 22a is coast guard, 70 is dsc. In large ports ships will talk with their tugboats on the 60s-70s commercial channels. A lot of the other channels are not used in most areas. This is all general info and may vary in your local area.
