I'm doing all the steps exactly the same, but the process works only once; afterwards, it either doesn't work at all or works incredibly slowly. I've checked the 'loop' option in the media, but I can't find the reason. Why isn't it working?

Just to mention you a mistake about your VHS tutorial. Everybody born in 80's know that overlay informations on VHS had never write on the VHS tape so the information like Date and Hours etc. cannot react with artefacts from the magnetic band, it must be clear and sharp above the VHS artefact ;)

If you still haven’t found a way. You could connect a multiply node to the Texture sample RGB and opacity. You can then change the B on the multiply node to change the opacity amount.
