The Crying Game is a great film, only watched it a few years ago for the first time thanks to the recent BFI Blu Ray

You really haven't seen The Crying Game?! It is an excellent drama/thriller that has more to it than "that scene". The only really bad thing about it is Forest Whitaker's Cocker-nee accent ; he gives Dick (ha, dick) Van Dyke (with that name he never would have made it in Hollywood, if he was a young man these days) a run for his money.
