God, it sucks that just about every video about drowning gets it wrong. Drowning is often quiet. You're trying to prevent water from entering your lungs, not inhale more, and usually you don't have the energy to flail around and scream. I hate that these supposed water safety videos give out the worst advice.

i live in ohio and i can confirm our small towns are so desolate that wendys can infact be a hangout space. last week i walked around homegoods with my friends for fun. my highschool was surrounded by cornfields. my elemenarty school taught us about corn and the phrase "knee high by 4th of july" is permenatly ingrained into my brain.

1:05:00 corn has a weirdly high amount of carbon-13 in it, to the point that you could (if you were some kind of mad scientist) tell Americans apart from Europeans JUST by how much carbon-13 there is in their bodies, since it's apparently the less-common isotope. Americans eat. A lot of corn. If you need to avoid it for whatever reason, it can be SHOCKINGLY DIFFICULT here, which sucks, but personally I was very excited to find out I was some kind of weird corn mutant compared to people from other parts of the world. also meringue kicks ass. have you ever had pavlova??? next time your favorite fruits are in season, make or otherwise acquire pavlova and then get back to me about meringue. I'll wait

fucked up thing is, european colonists really fucked themselves by monoculturing corn because of a religious rule against planting multiple types of crop in the same plot. all throughout the americas, natives used a naturally efficient form of agriculture called the three sisters - corn, beans, and squash. the corn provides a trellis for the beans to climb, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil for the corn, and the leaves of the squash shade the ground to keep it moist and prevent weeds. monocropping any of those is comically inefficient both agriculturally and nutritionally

As someone who grew up on a farm and seen pig-farming they don't even show you anything, pig barns are disgusting canals of shit and sick where every animal lives 2cms from each other all day everyday and do nothing but eat and shit. It was kinda horrifying.

Growing up in Michigan, at least the area I was from, Wendy's is a decent part of small town midwestern childhood culture (we also have a farming supply store despite there being two farms out here), and no one was that enthusiastic about learning about corn and local food production for the 7th time in 4 years. The most fun I ever got learning about corn was going to a Jiffy plant for a school fieldtrip and getting a free box of mix to make a single cornbread muffin. There's NO WAY those kids from Ohio didn't know at least a good portion of that stuff beforehand. (I am also not immune to cropaganda, growing up with a mother who is incredibly biased towards corn and dairy who has told me that the industry "isn't that bad" and "most of them aren't like that" who hasn't been to a farm that was bought out by one of the major companies)
