Good question. Both :wq! and :wq used to save and quit the file but :wq! is used to forcibly save. Usage: In linux every file contains read, write and execute permissions. so without read permission it won't allow you to read the file, without write permission it won't allow you to write the file. So if one file is created by you and it is having only read permission then using vi editor you can read the file and able to edit the file but while saving with :wq it won't allow you to save. In this situation we need to use :wq! for forcibly save.

Hi Sreekanth, This is RamaRao. You need to press ESC(escape) button to come out from insert mode. If you are not coming out from insert mode after pressing ESC, then you need to close the session and reopen it. some times session will hang if we give CTRL+S or CTRL+V. May be this could be the reason.
