Beautifully done, though I noticed that Ms. Calloway sang the ending differently than on the album version. Still, it was an awesome performance!

I don't know what it is, but I think the inclusion of choirs has been one of the best things to happen to ochestra music. Ever since Beethoven's Ode to Joy, it's just really opened so many doors to better help composers give their music that extra impact.

Calloway is so amazing. She easily destroys the japanese singer's performance. Also, this song is one damn tearjerker if you ever completed Chains of Promathia in FFXI. In my opinion, this is the best Uematsu-composed theme song for any Final Fantasy.

The harmonies and chord changes in this are just phenomenal, especially with the choir underpinning the main melody - the fact that uematsu wrote all of this having little musical knowledge (he didn't know how to read or write music when he began the franchise) is astounding!

For me personally, I prefer Susan Calloway's voice over Izumi Masuda's, at least in the live performances. Though I also find this version (way) too fast to really capture any of the feelings for me that I had with the original. So whilst it's good on its own merits, it just doesn't carry that (nostalgic) punch the original (or the other instrumental versions) still always have on me.

I absolutely love this song. If you read the translated lyrics it fits Final Fantasy XI's theme extremely well. Even the use of Esperanto for the vocals is used to represent the ease of bringing all sorts of global languages together onto the same servers, since as a language itself it was designed to be equally easy for someone speaking any other language to pick up.

I really love the last three sentence of the song from the original which I paid a lot of attention - the message that the song is about and to whom and with whom they are to be conveyed to/with. Its slightly different from what she sang live. I would prefer the original lyrics though which makes me feel more connected. Original as compared to the live version.: "To sing to you this song " "To sing with you this song " - She sang "To sing for you this song", choir that resonates sang the original with "with" "To sing to you your song" - She sang "this song" instead of "your song".

@riznich when they played this song in san francisco they went slower if i recall correctly as i was there blown away by the performance.
@jpnn8014 жыл бұрын
@riznich Well it's interesting you're mentionning that the singer is chosen by the composer, since it is Nobuo Uematsu himself who chose Susan, and not only for this live but also for the 2 lives in San Francisco. Also keep in mind that depending on the ambient mood, a live interpretation of the same song can have different tones and speed. Which can either please people as they discover a new version suiting their taste or not like in your opinion, which I respect.

@justa16thnote and I said, and repeat that Esperanto is not a latin based language, its grammar it's VERY different to Spanish or French and very similar to Chinese or English. It's based on indoeuropean languages, Romance, Germanic and Slavic. So spanish people singing English is not fine, or singing Russian... If they can pronounce it well, why not? Why redundant? You don't need an English native speaker to sing a song in English. Also, the creator of Final Fantasy is Japanese.
@WickedIsPopular13 жыл бұрын
I like Susan Calloway as a singer and she sings this song well, but i like Izumi Masuda's version better idk why, but i feel that she gives off more emotion when she sings. No matter the opinion BOTH singers are Great!
@EsperantaStelo12 жыл бұрын
@justa16thnote yes, romance are languages that come from Latin, but esperanto is also Slavic and German based, not only Latin. Yes, you're right, her English is not the best, but it a nice try. But there's lot of people that speak very good and without accent, and therefore can sing in their non-native language if they want so. Moreover, usually people like accents of a singer in a song. Shakira has a spanish accent and sings in English too. I don't see any problem there. GOOD NIGHT!

The song is meant to be sung with strong emotions. I listened to Izumi's version and it just didn't fit well. It's not eyes on me, as the whole composition starts with a dark atmosphere then transits into a ballad about one's "come what may" journey. There was no room for serenity. If it was placed in the game, it would fit in the middle as the heroes are still the midst of their adventure.
@IrishGirl92513 жыл бұрын
@riznich The sound quality here makes a big difference in the way Susan sounds in the song. Try listening to Final Fantasy 14 - Answers by Susan Calloway here on youtube to get a better idea or run Chasing the Sun here and hear her on her own song. She is an extremely talented, classically trained, award-winning singer who has performed the Final Fantasy score all over the world, having just returned from a week long gig in Japan with the orchestra.

@takerukari7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the live version tends to be on a quicker tempo. I've noticed that most of the longer pieces being played takes roughly about 10 minutes. If we were to slow down the tempo, it would take a lot longer than 10 minutes, and taking up time for the other pieces to be played

@alejandro31192 That's not what I said. I said that Esperanto, a latin based language, should be sung by people who sing in Latin based languages. Spanish people singing Esperanto is fine. Also, Distant worlds is originally in English but they had a Japanese singer sing it in English. Redundant don't you think?

I like being able to understand the lyrics of this song that I love so much. The original songstress who performed this song had an amazing voice, but fact stands that I couldn't understand what she was saying so I felt like I was only getting half the experience. Now that someone without an engrish accent is singing this I feel as if I can truly appreciate this song, not to mention she has a just as amazing voice.

@justa16thnote Esperanto is not perfect, but it suits better than English. If a better planed language comes, then welcome. But a globalized world needs an easy language which don't destroy other's culture. Maybe you can't understand this, you certainly can only speak English. Why mistakes? their prononciation was great. Esperanto's grammar is similar to English language (and more similar to Swedish) -AS =present; -I =infinitive; -OS =future, -IS=past mi saltOS = I'll jump; li trinkAS= he drinks
@jpnn8014 жыл бұрын
@riznich BTW I hope you were not implying that unlike you I'm close-minded or ignorant to other cultures and styles, since you would be wrong as I come from an asian family, I have been watching anime, studied a bit of japanese language and listening to all styles of music from Japan for 15 years.
@EsperantaStelo12 жыл бұрын
@justa16thnote What is really stupid is to compel the 97% of the world population to learn an irregular language as English. "It's actually REALLY stupid to have world people talk in a laguage that's ONLY ENGLISH based, and they can't say they "own" it" I prefer Esperanto to English as an international language. It is based on Latin Germanic and Slavic languages, and therefore it's easier for those which have an indoeuropean language as 1rst language.

@justa16thnote Why everything has to be sing in English, ¿por qué no en español? In Spain, I see lot of people singing in English and I don't complain. You watch only once your people singing in another language and you complain? How dare you? It would be great to hear people singing in other languages, not only English.

@alejandro31192 Romance is latin based... THe orignal singer, Izumi Masuda, did not do a good job singing in english. I prefer Susan Calloway, an english speaker, singing the song in her native language. NO mistakes. Honestly, I think the best person to sing a song in a language should be a native speaker, Esperanto being the exception because there are only a handful of native speakers.

@IrishGirl925 "classically trained" that's the problem imo.. she sounds too much like every other singer.. too robotic, no emotion. i never said she was a bad singer.. but the original conveys so much more feeling and emotion in this song. the technical flaws (sped up tempo etc) are either the orchestra's fault or intentional, not the singer's fault.
@cloudpierre13 жыл бұрын
@jpnn80 nobuo chose the original singer for the ORIGINAL version. if nobuo prefered susan calloway, he would have used her for the actual recording and video game. try to make excuses for the mistakes and unintentional sped up tempo all you want, this performance inferior to the recording by far. i actually usually like live performances better , because the flaws show the human element and emotion.. but the original singer (and orchestra) conveys MUCH more emotion.unlike this amy lee clone
@justa16thnote12 жыл бұрын
@riznich Why can't an english speaker sing the song in English? Also, Esperanto is a latin based synthetic language. I mean, it only make sense to have Western cultured singers. It's actually REALLY stupid to have Eastern people sing a song that's Latin based. There would be so many mistakes, I think your finicky minf would blow off.
@BgirlSakura13 жыл бұрын
For me, I prefer the one sung by Izumi Masuda. No I'm not one of those people who thinks everything in Japanese is better. Its just Masuda-San's version felt more fantasy-like. Whenever I listen to it, I feel like I'm floating off to another world. I still get goosebumps with Susan's version, but it doesn't affect me as much. Now if only Masuda-San's english was better, that song would probably just kill me with emotion. xD
@Alchemical12 жыл бұрын
People are so stupid. Take a music course and you'll know it's up to the conductor how the song is preformed. Tempo is rarely something set in stone, generally it's given a ballpark range (ie. moderato, allegro and so on). The speed will vary based on who the performers are and what the director thinks is best. Since this show uses local orchestra as it travels, each show will sound a bit different.
@cloudpierre14 жыл бұрын
not the most accurate performance a little too fast and obvious mistakes.. also the original singer is better
@Amargosasun13 жыл бұрын
Compared to other Final Fantasy music concerts this is truly bad and yes I agree: the singer was a very bad choice.
@kitsune8714 жыл бұрын

@cloudpierre14 жыл бұрын
@jpnn80 because i'm not closed minded and ignorant to other cultures and styles. the japanese singer is much more intimate and genuine to the song, how it's supposed to be sung, chosen by the composer for a reason..where as this girl just sounds like any mtv pop singer clone on the radio and ruins the intimate emotion by belting out every note. this whole performance however is just simply played too fast and poorly.
