The Collegiate Church of San Isidro el Real is one of the most interesting visits we can do in the center of Madrid. It is a large building with a lot of historical, artistic and architectural value.
It was built between 1622 and 1664 according to a design by the architect Pedro Sánchez, who directed the works until 1633 and continued.
later by Francisco Bautista and Melchor de Bueras.
The church replaced the parish of Saint Peter and Saint Paul by order of María de Austria, daughter of Carlos I, who bequeathed her fortune to the Society of Jesus with the purpose of building a new building on the new site. The new temple was consecrated on September 23, 1651 and in 1767, with the expulsion of the Jesuits, it was transformed into a collegiate church.
Two years later, by order of King Carlos III, it was dedicated to San Isidro, coinciding with the transfer of the saint's incorrupt body from the church of San Andrés. In 1885 it became the provisional cathedral of this city until 1993, when the current cathedral of Santa María de la Almudena was completed.
The Civil War caused numerous and important losses inside the temple, such as the main altarpiece and paintings by Francisco Ricci or Luca Giordano. After the conflict, there was a restoration that took 2 decades to restore, as far as possible, the splendor of yesteryear.
The main façade stands out for its monumental air with palatial reminiscences. Made of granite, it integrates a central body of four Corinthian columns, presided over by a sculptural group with the effigies of San Isidro and his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza. The capitals that crown the columns are characteristic of Francisco Bautista. They are topped by octagonal spires, which end in a needle, added during the reform of the 20th century.
The main access takes place through a hallway next to Toledo street, where we will see an entrance door and an exit door, on each side, while the central one remains closed except for special events, such as during Holy Week and the exit steps.
The temple was built in the Baroque style, following the model defined in the Church of the Gesù, in Rome. Its plan is a Latin cross and has a single nave, with side chapels, transept and dome, details that denote
this Italian influence. During the visit we cannot fail to see the tomb of San Isidro and the urn of his wife, Santa María de la Cabeza.
