This clip is dedicated with love and longing to our Grandmothers
Lyrics translted to english:
I will say to you, so you'd hear directly
so that you would declare (your) love to me
When you speak with your eyes,
I would fly with you wherever you wish
I do not care where.
When you have a bit of sense
And when you show your childlike little smile
When you are wild as an Indian
Even if you were a Galitzyaner,
I say: It doesn't bother me.
To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming.
To me, you are the only one in the world.
To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming,
To me, you are more precious than money.
Many pretty boys wanted me for a spouse
and among them all I chose only you.
Rap part:
Come on, come on, you beautiful lass
Don’t kiss Birenboim, kiss me under the tree
Round and round you go, boys, girls and you sweet ducklings
Lets dance the Katachkaleh dance

Very good! The only clip which really had shown the true intention of the song. Its a song sang by women or a woman to a man! The clip is excellent! They sing beautifully and you are grate! The staging and editting is greate as well! The only thing which bothers me is the accent . I miss the juicy Yiddish ptonounciation. You can work on it.

Thanks Vibers. This video is pretty great. If only Yiddish and Ashkenazi cultural revival and preservation didn't continue to entail Palestinian suffering and cultural destruction... I am not trying to troll anyone here. Just acknowledging the contradiction, and advocating for solidarity Palestinians, and a fuller reckoning with what all too often remains unsaid. I must admit I can't read most of the comments here. Nevertheless, I wanted to share my thoughts from a conversation with my friend who shared the music video with me. I notice this was filmed at a country club in Tel Aviv, and I can't help but see the not-so-hidden side of that tongue-in-cheek cultural and class performance (not sure the right word here, but I mean both the enactment of middle-class distinction and stereotypical gender-roles portrayed in the music video, and the celebration of Yiddish enacted by the song as a whole). In any case, I feel such a mix of emotions hearing Yiddish spoken and sung, not to mention "Jewishness" portrayed: Estrangement and familiarity, recognition and confusion, admiration and jealousy, pride and shame, grief and joy. My first impulse, actually, was to share this with my mom. I can only imagine her response, and its evocations for her, of her own, her siblings, and my grandparents' somewhat mysterious youths in Yonkers and NYC. As for myself, I can't help recalling warm summer days with my cousins at my grandparents' old apartments in San Diego, and at URJ Camp Newman in Santa Rosa - which almost completely burned down during the Tubbs fire in October 2017. I'm curious how we can work through such ambivalences both receptively and generously within our "cultural" labors - such as language learning and teaching - in a world where diasporic hybridity, in all its glory, can still feel like an inadequate response to active social and cultural imperialism and it's subtler, but no less hegemonic, reshaping of lifeworlds and possibilities...

The Palestinians/Arabs created their own misery by attempting and failing to annihilate another country. And they have never given up that dream. Can you appreciate American music without blaming Americans for what they did to the Natives ? And how about all the European nations who totally destroyed the civilizations in the New World ? At least the Jews had a strong connection and history to the land in the Middle East. The same cannot be said about the others.

As someone who has advocated congress for the creation of a Palestinian state, I implore you to recognize that Jews speaking Yiddish does not hurt anyone. Associating all things Jewish with the suffering of Palestinians is hateful and hurtful.
@unshakentomato5609
@unshakentomato5609 4 жыл бұрын
@@rafisw160 Hey Rafi, I realize this has as much to do with my own ambivalence about Israel as the song itself. I'm all for keeping Yiddish alive, and by no means associate all things Jewish with Palestinian suffering. As I said, this was filmed in Tel Aviv, and that's mainly what I am reacting to: The idea that Israel can be an upper middle-class Jewish utopia and site of cultural revival without coming to terms with its colonial present.
@unshakentomato5609
@unshakentomato5609 4 жыл бұрын
@@MCooper25 Hi Malone, I strongly disagree with your point that Palestinians "created their own misery," by losing a war, because I don't believe wars produce ethical outcomes, or that "might makes right." I find this especially questionable since the median age in the Gaza strip is a staggering 18 years old. Most who suffer today continue to suffer because of battles fought generations ago. As for your other points, I do appreciate "American music," but not without considering its relationship to colonialism and slavery, or contemporary inequalities and violence. Now don't get me wrong. I enjoy this song. I am merely voicing my thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the its themes and setting, in light of my own subjective associations. How much or how little you think a country club in Tel Aviv has to do with the ongoing political conflict and violence between Israelis and Palestinians obviously remains a matter of debate. It is also a matter of decades and generations, rather than centuries. Personally, that association impacts how I interpret the video. I think it is possible to both appreciate the music and video, and question their interpretation and political contexts, at the same time. Indeed, I think it's a crucial part of being self-aware and critical cultural participants.

As a cousin of Shalom Secounda, I’m a bit offended as you’ve messed with how lovely the song is by making a video completely unrelated to the words. Plus, it was rather insulting to women. However, the music was a fun adaptation of his work.

Nice adaptation but why on earth would you leave that racist bit about Native Americans and Galicians (Polish) in?
@cloakedsniper5016
@cloakedsniper5016 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why they're saying anything about native americans but I don't see anything wrong with the גאליציאנער part. It's not racist, it's invoking a stereotype that many גאליציאנער people in the community used to themselves. The racist term for polish people is not that. I think it's פאלאק

@@cloakedsniper5016 The line before that uses ‘Indianer’. What I meant was that there are two areas named ‘Galicia’, one in northwestern Spain and the other in Poland (and modern day Ukraine).
@unshakentomato5609
@unshakentomato5609 3 жыл бұрын
@@cloakedsniper5016 I don't speak Yiddish or Hebrew fluently, but I think Neel's point is that associating Native Americans with "wildness" reinforces an old, inaccurate, and racially-reinforced if not entirely racially-based notion of indigenous people as ostensibly "uncivilized," "undomesticated," or even (within a Social Darwinist paradigm) "unevolved." Those notions were and are based on simplistic hierarchical and teleological models of human development, which mischaracterize socio-cultural differences as either A) socio-historical stages, or B) biological-historical stages. Both of these assumptions have racist baggage (including the notion that Native American "Indians" can be conceptualized as a single group, and that human societies can be simply categorized along a dualism of "wild" or civilized"). Of course, many Yiddish speakers would not-necessarily have been aware of all of these connotations, and such terms or phrases might have been unremarkable in the past. To use them without comment today, however, is to ignore all of the problems I just mentioned, and at the minimum to re-circulate a tired and hurtful stereotype, with strong racial (e.g. racist) overtones. If the song had a line about being "as clever as a Jew," I think we could all agree it was offensive, if not outright Anti-Semitic. Doesn't the same go for "Indianer" and "Galitzyaner"? Just because people in a certain community used a common stereotype in the past, doesn't mean it should continue to be used unproblematically today - particularly in a song which explicitly seeks to reinvent the classic song (which has multiple published versions). Now, as far as I know, "Galitzyaner" no longer remains a culturally significant distinction, so it might be excused for being fairly innocuous. Still, how hard would it have been for the artists to alter these lyrics, even if one argues they serve more to express some kind of generalized cultural nostalgia, or maintain the songs poetic integrity, rather than transmit or reinforce offensive cultural categories.
